The performances are fine but none of the changes to M for Murder are for the better. In the end it's not bad but completely unnecessary.

Although well cast and for the most part well acted, it simply fails to live up to the Hitchcock that it is based on.

Could have been a lot better, but could have been a lot worse. I'm not a big Paltrow fan.

If Michael Douglas wasn't in this, wouldn't be interesting enough to finish. Because of him, it is worth seeing and being a littel surprised by the ending.

Less successful Hitchcockish tryout. I never understood why they drag Gwyneth around; she's not that good-looking and deffinately does not have required skills for deep character acting.

Lots of twists and turns, but it's hard to be really happy with the ending, even though I suppose everyone technically got what they deserved. It seemed to be a little far fetched most of the time to be taken seriously.

Denigrated as an unnecessary remake, this would have been an adequate thriller, were it not for the perfunctory and unsatisfying denouement. One either enjoys Douglas's smarminess or one doesn't; the rest of the cast does nothing.

not terrible but it doesn't even amount to an imperfect version of "dial m....". catch the Hitchcock classic instead.

Besides the fact that it's, you know, not very good, it's rather fun. New York looks great, and I covet both their apartment and Viggo Mortensen's loft. I like Michael Douglas much more when he's smarmy than when he's a good guy... gotta admit, I was kinda rootin' for him at the end. Because who doesn't hate Gwyneth Paltrow at least a little bit? Best line: "Hey Steven, do I keep fucking your wife in the meantime, or what?"

An extremely by-the-numbers and uneventful 90s thriller. There was nothing more to say than that, but then I read it was based on Dial M for Murder, yet inexplicable re-written to be exactly as I described as opposed to something like say: a good thriller. Which is easily a further 10 point deduction.

Surprisingly well acted and suspenseful film even though the characters are deeply flawed people and unlikable. This takes a lot of criticism for being a remake of a classic but it's not terrible just average.

Ridiculous story developments but a good cast makes it entertaining. Michael Douglas always plays a variation of this same role, but he does it so well that it's difficult to become bored of it.

Pretty run of the mill, not much to stand out here. Of course the whole plot starts to hinge on something not quite believable, & it's not as if something really unexpected is going to happen. Besides, i hate Gwen, she's not sexy.

Paltrow and Douglas are respectable in their roles, but there's no real chemistry between them. Mortensen tries his best, but as usual, his best isn't nearly good enough. it is well directed with a decent plot, but that's where it ends.

Decent thriller--not one of Douglas's best. Viggo is always good to watch and he does have some chemistry with Paltrow. Entertaining, worth a watch.

The reworking of the old Knott damsel-in-distress stage play, Dial M for Murder, filmed originally (and in 3-D) by Alfred Hitchcock, is sufficient to qualify as too-many-cooks but not to qualify as genuine originality. Did the business with the key makes better sense in the 1954 film? The match-up of Douglas and Paltrow could make sense only to a Hollywood "packager."

A story of emotional weakness and greed. A successful man is mortally offended by his wife's adultery, and sets out to give her the ultimate punishment and enrich himself in the process. He plans to rid himself of his cheating wife, obtain her money and settle the score with her accomplice. Risking all, with take all or lose everything stakes, he ventures headlong into an evil world of his own making.

Glossy production is only eye candy while the unsympathetic characters (led by a weak protagonist in Paltrow) march to the beat of many plot points that all come together in a rushed and dull climax. Douglas, the aged yet sturdy centerpiece of the film, shines as the pompous rich dude devoid of morals, and overpowers his youthful supporting players. Inspired by Hitchcock's 1954 film, "Dial M for Murder."

Ever wonder what you'd get if you adapted a Hitchcock film into a generic 90's erotic thriller? Here you go. There's nothing spectacularly wrong with this very loose remake of "Dial M for Murder", but it's overly complicated and ferociously inessential. Douglas and Paltrow are largely doing their typical thing from this period, but Mortensen is a bit interesting here. His character makes has a big shift in tone which he handles with really subtle changes in his performance.

Never being a big fan of the original, this fails to live up to the mediocrity of Hitchcock's version and eventually dissolves into 1990's stupidity. For added suffering watch the alternate ending.
