Black Cat, White Cat

It takes Kusturica about five seconds to immerse me into his crazy world, and for the next two hours I do not once want to return to the real thing. He is the undisputed master of making a scene complete and utter mayhem, without making it incomprehensible or annoying. There's nary a single scene in Black Cat, White Cat that doesn't have at least three different threads of action going on simultaneously. Kusturica is a genius. A genius.

How does he do it? How can Kusturica make a film as off-the-wall nutty as Black Cat, White Cat? The secret ingredient is social, psychological and behavioural realism.

The story isn't entirely compelling, but the gusto with which all the characters live out their lives, the pace that the film maintains and the degree to which background action is directed impressed the hell out of me.

One of the best movies of Kusturica that makes you forget the time, place, reality in general. The soundtrack of the film is also a very good work.

Completely insane, but brilliant. The best of Kusturica's films when it comes to comedy. Just sit back and enjoy the ride.

Another brilliant comedy from Kusturica... a little more slapsticky and less insightful than the others, but immensely enjoyable nonetheless.

Watching one of Kusturica's films is like being invited to a party you do not wish to walk away from. They always manage to leave me with an irrepressible sense of joy. In that regard, BCWC is a real treat.

Insane & hilarious.

2011 - Crowded. Sweaty. Lifeful. Colorful. Grotesque. Impossible to watch for a person mollycoddled like me, nearly with a rice-paper thin skin. Almost like torture. Still, I could not take my eyes off the screen. Absolutely brilliant. 2023 - Exsitensial angst over not relating anymore

It didn't have quite the same effect on me as Kusturica's other films, but it still had plenty of what I love: his unique brand of pure madness.

Joyous, chaotic and often hilarious, "Crna macka, beli macor" is an exuberant, lightweight celebration of Kusturica's unique cinematic style. Although the film lacks a single extraordinary feature to push it over the edge to greatness for me, the terrific cast (Todorovic being the hysterical highlight) and memorable, elaborately composed comedic set pieces secure its enjoyability.

Kusturica at his most accessible and pure, unadulterated fun. I just love this guy all over.

What can I say about this strange movie ? Stupid but funny. The second hour was very funny.

So many great characters that I still think back of fondly, but overall the film is just too slow - which seems ridiculous to say about a film where so much is going on, but many things going on aren't the same as many things happening.

A joy to watch!

Exuberant and wacky throughout, set in an off-kilter and slightly comedic universe. However, a lot of the substance doesn't work, with the romances meaning nothing to me (perhaps because that blonde chick is so annoying and useless) and the humorous set-pieces are entertaining, though feel empty and don't make me physically laugh. A curious oddity, if anything else.

Kusturica's black humor pervades every aspect of the film and once you get into it it's a fun and touching ride. Because it foreshadows things so clearly the first half is a little less fun than the second when you can finally see all the pieces come together but there's still never a dull moment.

This was my first Emir Kusturica film. Actually I've seen it before, but not from the beginning. The start was hilarious, then it's got a calm part, but the end was pure carneval. Pitbull! Terrier!

Kusturica never bores with mixture of lovable odd-ball characters (the grenade-juggling gangster Dadan is of course a favourite, but also the slightly mad offbeat beauty Ida is a standout), swinging gypsy-balkan music and a story that is perhaps a bit on the light side, but so life affirming filled with love, crime and liquor.

A warm-hearted movie that from the get-go creates its own, unique universe. Guaranteed to make you feel good.

As in Underground, easter european ompa music plays an important role in this fast-paced comedy. It's the kind of movie where you don't have to enable subtitles to understand what is going on.

Insanity founded in reality. As Jean Renoir said: "It is possible to be improbable and still true, and truth itself is generally improbable. You have only to sit outside a café; you will be amazed by the appearance of those 'real life' passers-by, faces such as no audience would put up with, a positive massacre." Can you imagine the cafés Emir Kusturica goes to?

Fantastic soundtrack, lovely folk, gipsy story . Giant in comedy.

There was no animal cruelty (I worried, based on the trailer). There was immense hilarity. Grga is an elegant vampire. The dancing girl is a hero. More wild dancing and jaw harp than you can shake a stick at.

Almost everyone I know thinks this movie is awesome... I didn't like the music at all since it made the film even more slapstick then it already was...

I think this picture is Yugoslavian, and why not, it's almost everything else. Funny or just weird as hell. Coarse & completely nuts, this takes screwball comedy to a level I haven't seen for ages. No pie fight.

An amazing movie, so full of life, easily accessible and just an all around fun time. Dadan has quickly become one of my all time favorite characters, such a lovable douche. Kusturica does it again

Crazy but intensely enjoyable multi-threaded comedy with a great score.

Good movie, but you can extract 2 black and white cats from Underground itself.

When I was about half the age I am now, I saw this movie and it became a great favorite of mine. Now, half-as-old-as-me-me made many, many, many questionable choices, but it's nice to rewatch this and find that her taste in Yugoslavian movies was impeccable.

I was exhausted and happy :-)

Non-political (and much lighter) follow-up to Kusturica's Palme d'Or winning "Underground."

I loved it. This is such a lovely film. It has one of a kind world. Great characters, silly love stories, and full of Balkan chaos.
