Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance
This second installation of the four-part Rebuild series sets itself an almost impossible task: To condense seven hours of the TV anime, episodes 7 to 20, into a single 108-minute feature.

I really enjoyed this much more than I was expecting to. The uncomfortable fanservice (14 year old girls objectified as sex objects) I feared was heaped on casually, and a lot of the subtle ambiguities and quiet pathos I loved about the series were smothered in favor of bombastic action, but I will confess: after 15 years, I am still a fan. This is much better than the first part, and seems to be headed in a direction that just might rival End of Evangelion...

Gets a ridiculously high grade for the last half hour alone. Hideaki Anno, you're a goddamned fucking genius.

An improvement on what precedes it, but the editing is still very jumpy and ultimately the content just doesn't interest me.

All of the changes are for the worse. Every motivation has been boiled down to Shinji's desire for a girl and vice versa. The show is clunky and awkward but it has nuance. Asuka is jealous of Rei's ability, not the attention she gets from Shinji. Shinji refuses to attack Unit-03 despite not knowing who is piloting it, not because he doesn't want to hurt his tsundere girlfriend. I used to think it was cool that they were "fixing" the show but now I'm starting to sour on the whole idea

As said by many others, this far outshines 1.0. The last act is worth the price of admission alone, with some interesting new storylines. Animation is again top-notch, and I agree wholeheartedly with the 'you must see this on Blu-Ray' sentiment.

Of course the animation and v/as are top notch, but the new character, battles and Evas make this outshine even 1.0 . I'm hoping that a bit more of the deep character analysis makes it into the next movie, because there's still a ton to cover.

So much fun. Balances the fanservice and intenseness tightly.

Every plot point that the original hints at or slowly develops gets the rush job in this one (also true of 1.0, just sped up even greater).

I love this. More destruction, carnage, mystery; great editing and pacing, fresh-looking animations and a fantastically devastating ending.

Feels most shallow when it stick close to the original series, and best when it deviates - the new characterization and arcs are great. It still lacks a certain emotional engagement, and goes really overboard with the fanservice, but this is still a fine film that takes Eva in a new direction. And for everyone who said Shinji should have manned up, he finally does - and it leads to the beautifully apocalyptic ending.

Holy shit this is amazing. It feels like it's going "You liked the characters in the TV series? Here's so much more of their complex inner lives, somehow compressed into two hours and intensified in the bargain, and also there's an all-new amazing cast member". It takes your expectations and flips them on their head and you're so, so happy it did. Kickass fights, kickass drama, kickass slice-of-life, and women going absolutely feral. What more could you ask for?

Whereas the 1.0 stuck very close to the source material, 2.0 is radically different from the source material. This is in my mind absolutely a great thing partly because the first few episodes with Asuka in (which would have been the time period a straightforward remake would have covered) were the worst in the show and partly because the new plotline is just generally bolder and more exciting than the show was for much of its run. I'm really looking forward to seeing 3.0.

I have to be honest here, I really like this story and I really liked the original anime but Evangelion just might be one of the most overhyped, overrated anime of all time. While I enjoyed this movie I don't feel like it improved on the corresponding episodes from the original in any real way.

Trumps 1.0. Great music and animation but not that you don't already expect that. This series continues to amaze me and just leaves me wanting the next two to come out as soon as possible.

As it was with the first movie, it was interesting to see the differences with the TV series. Hopefully, they're going somewhere interesting with all these changes because some important stuff was replaced or left out.

Evangelion 2.0 follows in the footsteps of the first part. The film still has the bizarre mix on childish characters and over-the-top gore. There are still inexplicable crucifixes of neon light. The daddy issues have been toned done, and replaced by a political subplot that doesn’t amount to much. The soundtrack is also still bothersome, filling silence and acting as emotion instead of under-scoring the plot. The finale is pretty good though.

A lot of it is a weird grab bag of half-realized ideas and pretentious religious nonsense, and the structure is still a TV series awkwardly hammered into a movie, but there are a few really amazing scenes that justify the whole endeavour this time around.

Anno seemed to know that the middle of the Eva story was its weakest part, so he completely rewrote it. This is fine, but I question whether a new character, "Beast Mode," and relentless pandering to shippers were the right way to go.

Either I was totally absent on the first one or this is a major improvement upon it. 3D is still lacking and stiff, but the rest is fabulous. With rich detail Neo Tokyo comes alive, especially sense of depth and scale is worth mentioning. Intermission songs are miserable and out of place. Well, since the original is there for whomever wants to investigate, I'll drop thinking about what's different. I wonder where they are heading, both the original ending and -End of Eva- are way past storywise.

Sheds the notion that it's a tv show and feels more like an actual movie. The movies are definitely more action focused and lighter on the themes and symbolism (there's still a lot of visual symbolism don't worry) but I always found Hideaki Anno's writing as very strong action smothered by a farting philosophy degree so this is fantastic for me. Rei continues to have a great arc in the film series and Asuka is a highlight. The movie cut down on some backstory for time but the animation is sweet

A huge improvement from part one. Since I only saw the first half of the original series back in the day, some of the freaky stuff that's taking place here is a bit confusing, but I'm interested to see where it's all headed. The action is really impressive, I love the ridiculously destructive power of the Angels. Those pop songs were pretty stupid and unnecessary though.

A bit more skewered towards the action fan, but 2.0 is still very much Evangelion and still has, for the most part, the same great character development and intriguing psychological aspect. Though, the latter is tamed down considerably and, depending on the viewer, that is a good or bad thing. To me, however, it kind of hurts the experience. I did very much enjoy this film, however, though Mari seemed to be a largely unnecessary addition. Very interesting ending.

As opposed to 1.0, this varies greatly from the series in terms of plot and I think this film is stronger for it. Don't get me wrong, I think the series was pretty damn near perfect, but it is really nice to see different interpretations of this incredibly unique storyline, and this film pulled it all off with beautiful flair. The animation is absolutely stunning and the characterization is still very strong. I really loved what they did with Rei and Asuka; Mari was a nice addition. Give me 4.0
