"We gotta try something different, try something new" proceeds to just make the Exorcist again but with two teenage girls. Almost zero character. Universal just lit 400 million on fire lmao. There's zero risk here, this was so bland I'd rather have a stroke trying to explain Exorcist II: The Heretic to Dahmer while he approaches me with a drill for some reason. Have Pazuzuuuu possess Halloween Kill's Big John and Little John next time this trilogy is DOA already.

Given that you can't outdo the shock horror tactics of the original, why stupidly repeat the possessed girl storyline? Cash, obviously & Diversity & Equity (i.e. black & Latino) mandates. At last black girls can finally "see themselves" as possessed by demons too! Because they have a black family in here, they also bring in an African voodoo(?) priestess because having a character based on any of the millions of black Catholics isn't properly Woke. Rabbis & Asian clerics also need not apply.

Yet another David Gordon Green horror flick with tight production, decent ideas and just the worst execution. The tie-ins to the original feel unearned and unnecessary. At no point did this feel like an Exorcist movie. Doesn’t help that there’s a complete lack of decent scares or tension. I didn’t have the acting, and the climax was genuinely a bit shocking, but the journey there ranged from mundane to watchable. I just did not care. Great score and make-up/effects I guess.

Unlike most people, I enjoyed David Gordon's Halloween trilogy, but this time he really messed it up. The Exorcist: Believer is a complete mess. Of course, I wasn't expecting a unique story, but I wanted to at least have a good time. Unfortunately, Believer is far from even being an average horror film. If you haven't watched it yet, I recommend The Exorcist (TV series), which I can't believe only lasted 2 seasons. And if you need a amazing sequel, watch The Exorcist III and see how it's done.

They really brought Ellen Burstyn back just to smash her eyes in and make her say the most generic and mindless lines of all time.

"Somehow, Pazuzu returned." Terribly dull and bland reboot-retcon-sequel, which is at its best when it's at its worst -- two or three moments so painfully dumb and misguided, though it actually brings joy to this atheistic and humourless movie that can barely bring itself to regard faith in any serious manner. This is a silly movie at best, despite its utmost seriousness, and feels closer to a regular product of the Blumhouse horror film company than a true continuation of this horror franchise

A loser franchise that hasn't been successful for 50 years, yet the boomer geniuses in Hollywood keep reviving it. Green is a terrible horror director, and this film, like his Halloween films, is just a feeble attempt to wipe the slate clean when it's actually inferior to all of the sequels. He also seems hell-bent on destroying the respective legacies of his female veterans. Burstyn is painful to watch, just as Curtis was in Kills and Ends, and it's frequently laughable.

As we're used to by now, DGG introduces some interesting new complications to the old story... and then promptly sidelines them to speedrun to the actual exorcism and "improve" on the original somehow. The result is a theologically, intellectually and dramatically confused movie with no characters, no balls, and no idea of what it wants to be. "What do you think evil is? I'll tell you what I think it is." Just get a blog, Dave.

So my influencer friend shouted 3 times watching this and yet, she came out and said it was super boring. Well, we agree.

Doesn't have nearly the balls it should. The story is boring at points and the film never picks up enough pace to be truly horrifying. Still, it is competently made, decently acted, and the effects are solid.

This feels wholly unnecessary and contrived, but I didn't hate it. There were some moments where it rose above mediocrity (the choice at the end was nice) and there was a scene where the demon children were laughing amongst themselves like children would, which was a nice touch. But besides that... I'm not a huge fan of the original but respect what it did at that time, and I can't say I HATE this one. But I don't really like it much either.

Not quite as bad as some are making it out to be but it’s mostly a failure. Has a lot of haunting imagery and dread that fill the first half, but loses all of that when it turns into a The Exorcist(tm) movie. Starts a lot of interesting threads that could make a new version of The Exorcist interesting (how these things might intertwine with new versions of spirituality/atheism, how class and race might impact exorcism, etc) but they just leave them dangling there. Not sure this needs a trilogy.

*clear my throat* Dear Universal Studios & Blumhouse production... *clear my throat again* FUCK YOU, YOU EMPTY-HEADED, GREEDY NIWITS!! How dare you sully a classic like 1973's THE EXORCIST! Was JOHN CARPENTER'S HALLOWEEN not enough for you?

I mean god forbid but even if the devil himself possessed me for 2 hours, I probably would have had a better time. It was the WORST thing I've watched in a long time.

This is where David Gordon Green lives now: in a world where it's a good idea to resurrect every horror franchise from the past, to middling results. Give him ten years and he'll be doing a new Freddie Kruger movie, guaranteed. Anyway, this was... fine, I guess? Some elements in there that I thought worked really well. It's a wholly unremarkable movie though that you won't remember long after it's done. It doesn't DEMAND to exist, nor does it present anything that really justifies existing.

“The Exorcist: Believer” offers a fresh take on the classic exorcism narrative by featuring the simultaneous possession of two girls and uniting people from different faiths to combat the demonic forces. While it embraces some familiar genre tropes, strong performances and compelling visuals make it a notable entry in the series.

People increasingly denounce them but my quasi-hot take is that I do overall like the idea of these decades-later legacy sequels, so long as they bring back a few of the original actors. That said the hit to miss ratio is poor, this mostly being among the latter. I wasn’t bored per se but man is it unoriginal, just another structural remake of the original Exorcist, same as a billion other exorcism movies over the last half century. Fails to do anything interesting with Chris MacNeil.

Mostly disjointed, demonic material feels lifeless and Burstyn's character is a joke, not to mention THAT already infamous last scene of hers, but I don't get the hate. Build-up up to the possessions is ok, cast of grown-ups delivers DGG's idea of colectivity towards trauma already seen in his H trilogy and I could feel a sense of dread about something evil we can't quite grasp or face, just witness -- atheist dad's reaction shots tell it all. Come on, guys, we've seen shit way worse than this.

This was the film I watched in a 4DX theater so that added to my experience. There is nothing really groundbreaking to the story but it is well made and acted so this film works. Overall I would recommend this film.

I enjoyed seeing it in the theater. If you just wanna kill time and watch something that might creep you out a little, you might enjoy this. Not a great film, and if you're looking for a film you can take seriously, and maybe one that will leave an impression on you, this isn't it.
