Blandly passable melodrama but as someone who never quite recovered from an early infatuation with Tolkien I have two major issues with it. Firstly, He explicitly expressed disdain for all directly allegorical readings of his work yet this film goes ridiculously OTT with ascribing clear origins for his ideas to the point of absurdity & plain disrespect. Secondly (I knew they were going to do this), they completely ignored Tolkien's deep catholic faith & its significance to his life & writing.

Tolkien didn't really do anything wrong per se. The production values and the acting were decent, but it was just a slog to watch and not all that engaging. It was like watching your average by-the-numbers biographic movie. There were some okay parts like Tolkien bantering with his younger friends here and there, but most of the movie was just not that interesting. The visuals during the battle sequences were probably the highlight. It's nicely shot, but overall just wasn't all that memorable.

Filled with subtle (and not so subtle) references to Middle-earth. It is also touching, very linguistic, and probably for fans only. Others (I pity the fools) might be in for a bore.

There’s nothing really wrong with it per se - in terms of acting and production values and whatnot it’s perfectly good - but it’s also just kinda all around dull and stodgy. If you can watch the whole thing start to finish without checking your phone at least a couple times you’re more patient and attentive than I.

Surely they "romantified" it and spiced it up with a few clichés, but still really nicely and creatively told. A story I didn't know, about a man who was a genius. *Recommendable

An effective little biopic leaning more into symbolism than biography. The friendships were charming and the leads had strong chemistry.

Writing as a fan of the LOTR films, as opposed to the novels, the best parts of this are the moments of personal turmoil & struggle, be it between JRR & poverty, his guardian, his wife-to-be, or close friends. Fans of English architecture will also soak in some beautiful locations & cinematography. What doesn't work are way too many scenes of war meant to illustrate where he got his ideas of evil from. Obviously fans of the books are going to get a lot more out of this Spot-the-Reference game.

I really liked it. I am a huge fan of Tolkien's work and it is clear that the filmmakers took a lot of liberties with this portrayal, but as a film this works. Great casting of the two leads, the scenes with them are written very well and are really touching. Great soundtrack and visuals. Really, really good, I wish it would go on longer. There are some typical biopic clichés but as a whole this film easily transcends generic biopic fare. My love for Tolkien may play a part in this though.

Fairly bland but watchable historical love story, Although its purpose seems to be to show the purported inspiration for Tolkiens stories and in this it is heavy handed.

Ok. I am probably most disappointed by the film's completely ignoring Tolkien's Catholic faith. I also felt the war sequences added almost nothing of value to the film, and instead took us away from the more interesting elements of his formative years. The film does have some nice moments, with Miss Bratt and especially with the TCBS.

Almost totally forgettable biopsy of a guy who's past I did not know much. They said he was in with languages for all of his life but it was pretty much as a background of the story. The director choose to show just blunt mediocre melodrama we have seen so often. Some highlights but that's it.

I am totally biased on this one. It's probably my love for the whole Middle Earth universe, and the fact that I watched this on a first class flight from CPH --> ORD. I enjoyed it very much! The casting was excellent for the four friends + the pastor and professor. The score was brilliant, being it's own, but hinting at LOTR. *Good

tolkien hakkında yapılan ilk biyografi filmi olması sebebiyle duygusal bir bağ kurabildim fakat filmde tolkien dehası ve tolkien yaratıcılığı seyirciye aktarılamamış. ilk üç çeyreği başarılı.

Not really engaging or inspiring or anything, it just wants to be a straightforward biopic for the fans. But, in a way, it touches what really matters in Tolkien's masterworks, like friendship and the passion for fables and the unknown. The scenes mixing WWI with Tolkien's future work are the highlights here.

1. Dünya savaşı'ndaki müfrezeyle konu bölünse de 2 sanatçının hayatını kaybetmesi üzücü. Hayatlar Oxford, gerçekler Dünya Savaşı.

Tinha sua première há 5 anos em Londres. Filminho estranho do caralho. YTS.

Truly emotional if you have a weakness for hero journeys, but fails to be spectacular.Tolkien's life isn't a very good material. The movie focuses on the spiritual journey Tolkien undertook in his youth that later inspired his works. This results in some weird time jumps which make the picture a bit incoherent. Also, as a Tolkien expert, I dare say there are a few questionable casting choices. Otherwise the atmosphere and the score are beautiful. I can recommend it to those interested in Tolkien.

There's a sweetness about the movie that can be appreciated, but there's absolutely nothing of value, or to learn from it about the man or his writing.

I liked it a lot. Seeing the shaping of Middle Earth through his experiences at school and in the trenches of World War One. Nicely played by Nicholas Hoult.
