The story of Takezo is very much sad, yet adventurous. The mighty and hot-headed wannabe samurai goes out into battle to seek fame and fortune but finds nothing but what may be considered unserendipitist (not a word) realities of the harsh world he would so love to conquer. Within these ambitions, a gargantuan change is found in the newly honorable Samurai who continues his adventures anew. It is said that these films are Japan's Gone With the Wind; and quite frankly, I couldn't agree more.

Highlighted by a pretty cool battle sequence, this first flick in Inagaki's Samurai Trilogy is mostly about setting up all the characters and their relationships. Mifune is awesome as usual.

Sets the stage for the new two films in the trilogy perfectly. Mifune is excellent as the hot-headed would be samurai Takezo.

Classical, and also a bit generic. But it's got Mifune, vivid landscapes, and one or two well done set pieces.

Samurai I is a righteous, miraculous, quickly paced and prodigious drama brobdingnagian. One of the best Inagaki has to offer, and also the start to a phenomenal trilogy of epic proportions.

There were times where I felt I was being lied to. Does that make sense? There were parts I liked visually, like the way the search parties were filmed and the great use of historical landmarks. And then there were the herky-jerky Three Stooges/Sam Raimi fast zooms which had no purpose or target and made me question the director's eyesight. The plot was okay, despite the characters not yet fitting into it, and I'll be back for the next two films.

Plenty of gorgeous woodland scenery and heroics here for George Lucas to mine for Star Wars. Priest Takuan does a great Obi-Wan Kenobi impersonation.

Intriguing and insightful. There are many nuances that take a long time to "get" for those of us who are not natively Japanese. But the fact that the movie eventually conveys them to us and makes us want to root for the protagonist is a credit to how well this movie was made.

Its like batman begins only with an angry young samurai turning to a righteous quest. Also its way better. Also toshiro mifune. Great origin, Im excited to continue the trilogy.

I'm looking forward to watching the sequels to this. It's an exciting film without a slow moment with a great performance(of course) by Mifune.

A great origin story. Mifune is excellent, as expected.

Entertaining but thin adventure that plays out like the first third of a hero's journey. Sluggish pace & clumsy narrative drag it down somewhat. Considering its historical backdrop & legendary main character it's quite disappointing how little there's going on in the story. It's a mediocre but passable plot which doesn't really impress but sets up the characters. Mifune does his thing & the visuals are superb. Some grand painterly shots are almost enough to elevate the story by themselves.

"The Samurai" trilogy is lauded by critics and viewers alike, but I simply got nothing out of it. I didn't like Takezo much and the inclusion of a needy woman simply made me tune out.

It looks gorgeous, and Toshiro Mifune is ever dependable, but everything else came up a bit short for me. Every scene contains the bare minimum to keep the plot moving without any depth, nuance, style, or compelling dialogue, and that same serviceable nature goes for the shallow characters and underwhelming swordplay

Classic story of a strong young ambitious young man who wants to become a samurai. His is strong and out of control. He joins the war to make a name for himself, but is denied the opportunity. When he returns home, he becomes a menace. A monk intercedes and forces him to accept education, then afterwards he sets out to become a samurai on a long quest. Along the way, he gains a reputation for his swordsmanship. The beginning of a 3 part adventure.

Feels like the first hour and a half of a much longer movie, not like the first part of a trilogy at all.
