Despite some bright spots (gorgeous animated backgrounds, Captain Carter and Star-Lord T'Challa are really wonderful characters, the Doctor Strange episode is a masterpiece), the overall impression is fairly negative. And I'm an MCU apologist. Most of the attempts at humor were cringeworthy, and it thinks it's making these bold choices when it really isn't - you can feel it retreating at the mandates of the IP. IMO, the Multiverse may break the MCU - this was not a good sign of things to come.

An interesting idea, I’ve always been interested in What If scenarios both in film and IRL, so I was cautiously optimistic. The quality varies greatly, with episodes 3, 4, 8, and 9 being my favorites. The animation is enjoyable once you adjust to it, and it allows for some pretty great action scenes. The episodes are a bit short, which doesn’t give much time to get invested in any of the worlds presented. Edit: DNF’d during season 2. It wasn’t improving, but instead getting less interesting.

I find this interesting in the sense that MCU lore has become grand enough that something like this can functionally exist. However, it runs the gamut in quality, between heavy hitters like the Strange episode and total shitters such as Killmonger. The second season was mostly a dumpster fire, and it baffles me why they think this show needs to have an overlying plotline and least of all with Peggy at the forefront of that even if it's at the expense of more interesting characters.

Slightly handicapped by runtimes and weaker episodes, but at their best the finest episode are stylish and entertaining. An interesting MCU addition.

Would much rather have non-MCU canon shows that can do whatever they want, than have this. Some episodes had some moments of interest, but not a show I will go back to or think of very often.

The first season was better written and executed. It's probably a 75 or so. The second season is extremely hit or miss, and 65 is probably a more accurate score for that season overall.

It was good the first season, but then they decided to give it a storyline, which is fine, and then make it canon. It should have stayed true to what it was, a "What if...?" and not become anything more.

It's quite interesting, rather fun, and the way each season blends into an overarching storyline is unexpected at first. Satisfying conclusion to the whole series, worth it for that DBZ fight at the end, but sadly you can tell some episodes were cut and important characters appear without a backstory episode multiple times. Requires suspension of disbelief when it comes to power scaling. Not a bad show, would have been nice if it kept going, but that art style has to be expensive to produce.

Some are good. Some are trash. Most, especially in the second season, have decided to ship the woke messaging of Disney, and it gets so obvious you can't ignore it anymore. I'm sorry, but I'm not going to buy that Peggy Carter would have made a better Captain America super soldier over Steve Rogers. I liked the version of her that died in Multiverse of Madness, and I kinda thought that was the What If...? version.

Having (so far) only seen season 1: It feels like most episodes were planned to be at least 1 hour in length, then ruthlessly cut down to fit within 30 minutes. Stories that seemed genuinely interesting are given absolutely no time to breathe. I had also hoped that these would be fairly standalone stories, but the final 3 episodes turned it into yet another tiny piece in the ongoing colossal MCU jigsaw puzzle

Review of S1: The height of the original Disney+ release offerings along with The Mandalorian, What If... adapts some classic Marvel comics along with compelling new takes on existing characters. A clear early salvo to acclimate the general public to the concept of a "multiverse", these stories are visually interesting and carry emotional heft, particularly the one focused on Dr. Strange and Marvel Zombies. A welcome addition the MCU canon. PSI: 79

It's not some "must see" for the MCU by any means, but it's a fun addition to the universe, and there are some satisfying episodes. It's particularly nice to get to see Chadwick Boseman one final time as Black Panther in a few episodes, and more of the original cast returns than I would have expected. The episodes do ultimately connect together in a pretty fun way too. Second season wasn't as strong.

I find this to be one of the more conceptually and artistically interesting Disney+ MCU entries, but it is not consistent enough due to the episode length: about half of the episodes feel like their runtime is padded.

Chadwick Bozeman is fun to watch play against his usual Black Panther stuff, but the animation is actually pretty meh and for an anthology series this could have been way cooler

It's kind of hard to rate a series like What If...? The first number of episodes all seem to be one off stories about other universes within the multiverse. Some of these stories are pretty fun, other stories are pretty bleak and depressing. However, I felt like the last few episodes brought it all together in a really satisfying way and made the sum greater than its parts.

8 one-off stories that were a bit too short and felt rushed in a "cut-to-the-chase" all action sort of way. But then...ahh...that good ol' Marvel "it's all connected" feeling.

It started really slow, the first 3, 4 episodes put me to sleep literally, but with the Killmonger episode, it became more funky, daring as What If stories should be. Trying to tie all of them felt unnecessary to me in the beginning but they managed it pretty week actually. The best part was episodes 5-7; it is not the best thing that came out of MCU, but it is enjoyable.

What If has a very easy to follow premise. What if things that we saw turned out differently. It has a few hiccups along the way in terms of consistent story telling and the creation of these What If stories. It's very well animated and features a lot of returning talent. It could have been darker in spots to try and emphasize that anything could happen. Zombies, T'Challa and Strange are the stand outs. No doubt about that.

279.What If...?

I feel like I'm being generous because I really liked the last two episodes, but the truth of the matter is that while Marvel Comics can pull up that stunt and come up with gold more often than not, MCU has a too limited set of characters for this to work. This should have been an opportunity to explore supporting characters (that's why Captain Carter works so well), but instead they just use the same leading characters I'm frankly done with and in a not actually imaginative way.
