I found it distracting when the alien revealed that he was a musician and would need a chauffeur/bodyguard to drive him around the south of the planet but I was happy that they became friends in the end.

One of the best-told stories I've seen on film. Real conflict and real emotion drives this film, despite the '80s effects appearing a little dated by today's standards.

Loved it when I was 10. Watched it again to see if it held up. Love it for different reasons now.

I have a soft spot in my heart for Drac, mostly because I had his complexion when I was in high school. Also, I'm sure there's some sort of allegorical connection here with what's going on in the world today, but I'll be damned if I can figure out what it is.

So very underrated. Proved that Sci Fi didn't *just* have to be about special effects. The story here is wonderful.

A little under-rated. I think it got more talk during the 1990's, but by now it is largely forgotten.

Two warriors in the future get stranded on a deserted planet. The alien was suitably weird. Power struggles is a kind way to describe what transpires next. The story is compelling and engaging as the two enemies cooperate in order to survive and eventually develop a bond between them.

While bad-cheesy at parts and inherently flawed throughout, this film is still very lovable and unique in that the themes hit in this film are hit by this film in a way that only this film has hit them. This film. Hit.

one of the first american sci-fi movies to tie-in sci-fi with drama, and quite well at that. a fresh and original plot, accompanied by a heart-felt story that parallels some conflicts one may see today. i just wish it was a longer movie.

I dug the premise of the movie but it took the most predictable and lamest direction a film with this premise could take. The survivalist elements were neat in parts, but the two leads were extremely generic and the plot utilizes a lot of lame tropes unabashedly. It does toss a bit of a curveball about halfway through the movie but that plays out precisely how I would think it would. I dig the vintage special effects, though. The monster designs were cool, for what little of it they showed.

A childhood favorite of mine. It is not a particularly good film, but Quaid and Gossett both give it gusto.

A good B-movie that shows that a good story/characters are more important than fx (cheesy) and action (not very much).

A great symbol for racism. An okay performance by Louis Gosset Jr. The rest is laughably silly.

Really really liked it. It's basically the kind of science fiction I really like with the human and alien interaction. The aliens makeup is great but the special effects are dated. It doesn't bother me as there aren't that many effect heavy moments. There are also some points in the script that are shallowly written. It doesn't take too much away from the overall product but they are noticeable. Quaid is playing to the back row. Mostly I found it charming but a few bits made me roll my eyes.

This mediocre movie is a sci-fi take on the enemies becomes friends plot. Dennis Quaid overacts the entire picture. It also doesn't help that his character is irritatingly arrogant, but of course this is necessary for the character to undergo the necessary character growth. Louis Gossett Jr. does a lot better beneath all the make-up and mask.

Magic negroes... in space! In The Return of Starbuck (1980) Starbuck gets stranded on a planet with a Cylon whom he befriends. In The Enemy (1989) Geordi LaForge does the same with a Romulan. In Darmok (1991) an alien forces the same situation on Captain Picard. All of these are superior because none of them have a black actor teaching a white actor that racism and slavery is bad only to die 5 minutes later. Only Gosset's fantastic performance and some gory deaths save this from a lower rating.

Seems torn between the more contemplative and philosophical 'conversation with an alien' movie (which is just about a micro-genre), and a more lavish and spectacular studio sci-fi genre film. The result is a little too moronic, although it has a smattering of ideas that are almost decent.

Polarizing because on the one hand it's a pretty trite tale with dated sfx, but it's also totally awesome and sad too.

While the Special Effectgs may be a little dated 21 years later, this movie was never about that. This a character study. The interplay between Quaid and Gossett is what this film is all about. The cynic may feel this is a glorified Star Trek episode, but I think it's a very important story.
