Good movie, but it didn't interest me very much. I think I'm just generally fed up with gangster movies. I did like parts of it quite a bit. One thing I particularly liked was how the last scene was basically a gangster version of the final scene of The Graduate.

The soundtrack is in your face for no real reason and it takes a while to get going, but it's a pretty fun gangster film. Hoskins is really good and there are some really striking scenes, including the ending, that make up for some of the rough edges.

A really good british gangster film that holds above most in the genre by virtue of Hoskins' and Mirren's performances. Its tight focus on a crime boss's emotional well being while his empire crashes around him makes for a surprisingly thrilling mystery to watch unfold. Tips its cards a little early, but then still packs a couple more twists to throw you off. The score really dates the film, and can be grating to some, but I found it kind of oddly endearing.

Generally considered to be Bob Hoskins' break-out role, and almost 40 years later, it's easy to see why. He sets the tone for every scene he's in and commands the screen with an effortlessness that is absolutely reassuring. And Helen Mirren supports his every nuance. Worthwhile just to watch these two, but there are plenty of other reasons as well, like solid casting and good writing.

The Long Good Friday is possibly my favourite British crime drama of all time and it remains a British classic. Without exposition or unnecessary back story the viewer is thrown straight into the drama. And the story unfolds masterfully. Bob Hoskins gives an absolute masterclass, Helen Mirren is as equally commanding and the stellar supporting cast is a who's who of unsung British talent. And the brilliant screenplay, cinematography & score are just a few of the many qualities this film boasts.

Generally a very good crime movie, however the music is just wrong and I had a hard time taking this film anywhere near seriously because of it.

For me, the definitive British crime film. Bob Hoskins and Helen Mirren are excellent - playing stock roles in very great ways, and also getting to play around with some unconventional characteristics which are well done too. The score is phenomenal (I cannot understand the hate for it) and the plot progression is perfectly paced, leaving enough mystery to keep a first time viewer going but the film doesn't entirely hinge on any twists. Very striking imagery throughout, too.

Very solid and catchy. Hoskins and Mirren shine the screen. Mac Kenzie's direction is also masterful in the way he managed to blend in the back and let the game play out. Soundtrack is engaging as well.

Very good thriller that takes the gangster flicks of the 30's and the noir sensibilities of the 50's and places them in the Thatcher-era political/economic climate. The plot unwinds at a satisfactory pace, revealing information at an accelerating rate. Hoskins gives a powerhouse performance, Mirren is fantastic as always. The music is a trifle dated, but I've heard cheesier. All in all, it's a compelling (and entertaining) look at two different kinds of violent underworlds in conflict.

There's some fine performances in this film, not the least of which is Helen Mirren's as Hoskins' wife, but the film belongs to Hoskins. It's a little ragged and cheap, like a lot of British productions of the period (it was conceived as a TV movie), but Hoskins strides through the film like a colossus. The final scene of the film is an astonishing bit of acting.

A very good and entertaining gangster flick. Hoskins is magnificent in the lead, somehow managing to elicit some sympathy despite being a nasty piece of work. He has some terrific lines, does some brilliant work with his teeth, and I'm struggling to remember anybody more Cockney-sounding. Mirren provides some excellent support, and the cast is littered with the soon-to-be well known. I liked the direction and plotting, and the London setting was well used. I found the score a touch odd. Great.

A great British gangster film in the traditional of Get Carter. Bob Hoskins does a terrific job as the lead, and the ending makes the movie worth a watch on its own.

Without that ending this would have been a film of some good performances but not much going on. The ending is stark and good.

There's oddly a lot of poignancy after Brexit in a crime boss trying to revitalize the London docklands in order to make London the capital of Europe.

I'd say that although each scene is decent, there's no moments that actually ever make this film lift, not even amongst the explosions (or the gangsters trying to divert the American investors away from the explosions). What does lift this is Hoskins, with a truly committed performance, one that I'm sure influenced Gandolfini's as Tony Soprano, and he gets to make good use of it with a couple of monologues about London's future on the international stage, innit

Solid gangster flick with a great show from Hoskins. The Irish gangsters coming out of the truck on meat hooks is classic. Great finale to boot.

Didn't really do a lot for me this one, apart from Hoskins. He was excellent, but everyone else seemed a bit stilted and wooden to me, particularly Thompson, who I've never rated. The electronic score wasn't that great for me either. Thought it would be better given the write-ups.

Interesting transatlantic variation on glum 70s gangster/crime pics. The busy plot is not as complex as it tries to be, but the real attraction here is Bob Hoskins' dominating performance as a charismatic and cunning brute. (I believe the modern term is 'zaddy.')

A British crime boss courts an American mob to finance a casino. When bombs start exploding and killing his people, he becomes desperate to find out who is threatening his empire. He mobilized his men, tortures people, and rounds up local gang leaders. He hangs them by their feet in a meat locker, then learns that they are not involved. Hoskin's accent is sometimes indecipherable. Helen Mirren is very good. Horrible irritating music. Some of the story is poorly shown, but a memorable movie.

A very solid crime thriller with a fun cast anchored by an outstanding performance by Hoskins, who kind of reminded me in some ways of Cagney's work in gangster films. Mirren acts well alongside him and Eddie Constantine is believable. The score is very, very early 80s, heavy on the synth. It's also Pierce Brosnan's first feature film performance.

Bob Hoskins knows how to yell and boy does he snarl loudly here. But his ability to show rage through his eyes and gritted teeth is something to truly behold. This is a great British gangster flick with a baby-faced Pierce Brosnan and a dazzling early performance by Helen Mirren. It all comes together in a tight narrative and with such a crazy synth score.
