The other HBO masterpiece from the last decade, Barry is a chameleon of a character and a show. It mirrors the chaos of life through the lens of something most of the audience can't possibly relate to but often makes us sympathise with Barry against all odds. It can be so funny and deeply warm one minute and devastatingly sad or cynical the next somehow without suffering tonal whiplash a single time (unless it wants to.) Docking a single point with its paramour Succession as it won the finale.

Are you ever a bit hungry and a bit depressed, and you don't really know what to eat, and you don't really care because you just need something to give you some basic sustenance so you live another day? Barry is the TV equivalent of whatever you eat when you're feeling like that. Sure, you can watch it. It'll pass the time; another day of your life will go by. Was it worth it though? No. Would you watch it again? No. It's just something to watch, while the clock runs down.

S1: 80 - Finds a way to tie together it's ridiculous narrative and characters that make it worthwhile. S2: 90 - Soars from here and becomes a highly favorable TV series.

Works so well because it fully commits to the crime thriller angle. Large sections are completely devoid of comedy and it works, a great grasp on tone --update-- This show has gotten better and better each season. Season 3 was excellent television start to finish, and they really pushed the characters/performances to new places... Season 4 was wild and refused to take any of the easy choices. Maybe a bit truncated for everything that was going on but mostly a satisfying conclusion

Season 1: 82. Great tragicomedy that hits its stride at the end. Season 2: 90. Finds its stride and commits to an engaging plot and interesting dynamic

Damn this one is pretty damn good, kinda slows in the middle series, but it's pretty damn good.

My god, does this show go off the rails, or what? Excellent start, but like a zombie, bits of it just fall apart as it clumsily makes its way towards a half-baked conclusion.

This is just one of the best comedy series ever, even though it's recent. Great gore/dark comedy in this and honestly it touches serious topics really well

very good show my only problem would be the last season was a little weak but i would the first 3 are all incredibly well made and I would tie them to be equally as good. season 4 isn't bad but falls short since it was very different from what the earlier seasons were

Barry is the rare show that has everything. It is laugh out loud funny, thrilling, deep and at times disturbing. It is the type of rare comedy that's not afraid to be original and play with your expectations. Shifts in tone and style are hard to pull off, but this show flexes its infinite flexibility on numerous occasions. I respect the hell out of a show/film that's impossible to outguess. My hat is off to Bill Hader for creating one of my favourite TV series of all time.

Highly original, good dialogue and acting

I love the serious part of the show. Characters have real depth. It's love-hate relationship. Story pacing is perfect. Good shooting. BUT I totally don't get the sitcom part of the show. Why for God's sake do we have parody style jokes like from 90s TV comedy? It ruined the first season. Luckily in the next seasons there was less and less of that poor parody. It could be Fargo, True Detective or Better Call Saul masterclass, but showrunners ruined with shitty jokes.

what if breaking bad was funny

This black comedy was almost perfect, including high production values, twists and turns, movie-within-a-movie and other Hollywood values. Yet, it is at the same time a satire on big budget productions. Short running time did not stop it from being very densely packed with comedy, drama and terror. S02E05 among others is a masterpiece.

There were moments, especially early on, where this was REALLY funny and entertaining. Unfortunately it got darker and more serious later. Our favourite episode was "ronny/lily" in season 2, with nothing afterward matching that. And the last season wasn't great.

Oh. Wow.

Hader used BARRY as a platform to showcase both his sense of humor and his film buff nerdiness, complemented by tight writing and terrific performances. It's a show that never feels comfortable settled for too long, often pulling jokes or shocking twists out of the air at the blink of an eye, and ultimately it sticks the landing. Hysterical turned haunting and worth your time.

Some incredibly good episodes. Some excellent moments. I don't like the fact that the show tries to make us have positive feelings for a sociopath who murders people around him. It's why I can't rate it higher. Wraps up nicely in the end.

It was super good out of the gate, but lost steam rapidly & began to unfurl with plot holes & increasingly unsympathetic characters in season 2. Didn't watch season 3; may give it another chance. The story was enjoyable.

A great combination of light and dark. A bit too clichéd at times, esp for The Hollywood Industry and a certain Czechen Optometrist, but most actors playing actors are deep, strange and way past cool. Even this far in I just never know what's coming next, but am stuck at the edge of my seat, having to find out. Whether they'll deliver a great gag, or I'll gag

An excellent first season perfectly balances farcical comedy with a thick slice of darkness, but it goes a little off the rails in subsequent seasons trying to replicate the arthouse-streak of Breaking Bad. It stays difficult to predict but it fails to hold up to the audaciousness of Season 1.

S1: 70 - S2: 85 - S3: 100 - S4: 90

Season 1 - 85, season 2 - 89. This is a dark, dark riot. Not for everyone, Barry is a great comedy about redemption and whether someone's nature can truly change in quite possibly the most ridiculous clothing imaginable.

S1: 75, S2 & S3: 90, S4: 70 - though I have to respect S4 for being one of the strangest turns a non-Lynch television show has taken. Oh wow.

Pretty good and enjoyable. Season 1 is nice, good humor and performances. Season 2 ramps up the tension, maybe even funnier. Overall, I don't like most of the normal characters (intentional?) but there are great bad guys to compensate.

The tonal shifts are really jarring, and for the large part didn't work for me. The style of comedy just really undermines the pretty serious dramatic elements.

What a great show. I was deeply skeptical of the premise - and, having watched both seasons, am still shocked that it works as well as it does. But it all amounts to a terrific black comedy that isn't done nearly often enough.

It's alright but the novelty wears off and it becomes formulaic

S1: 75 A good recall to the Dexter days, unfortunately some of the plot just got too silly and nonsensical. S2: 90 Really leans in to the absurd tangle and delivers some of the best TV available right now.

s1-Has a certain quality of production, but it's vastly overrated and moronic in most ways. This can only be called "smart" nowadays. O the times...

Loved this. Tough balance to strike where the main character is so good and effective in his own brutal world, and so poor in the artistic life he suddenly thinks he wants. Great humour all the way through. Cast all genuinely excellent. I also really love the recurring joke about all the stage pieces being from movies.

W4E1P1S2M1V1A1R1. Devoured it quickly and liked it a lot, though nothing to write home about. Basically Dexter: The Musical Comedy.

No need to get distracted by this technically competent, practically cozy first season. It's carpeted in bland humor and easily-swallowed plot shifts. Feels like HBO extracted anything worthwhile to protect its investment. Carrigan as Noho Hank and a quick Kurosawa gag are highlights. Root and Hader are huge talents, and the latter shows he can act. But it's too safe to be a good drama, and it's not funny enough to elicit more than a smirk here and there. Update: Season 2 really delivers.
