Initially intriguing mini-series is certainly not short on scope or ambition, but leaves its premise sketchily defined, and refuses to make Hill or Stone an objective 'control' subject - it makes this a cold and distancing (and ultimately ineffectual) experience. Livened mainly by the fine performances (you can never tamp down Field or Byrne), and Hill and Stone do show an impressive range during their time hopping adventures, but it's all for naught.

Original, touching, wide ranging, well acted. The slow plot development in the first 3 episodes is definitely a sticking point - I gave up at ep 3 and see others did too. The payback for sticking with it is high though, and the slow development makes the fantastical scenes and ending all the more worth it.

It was just long enough, and just fucking weird enough, to work. But it was a bit too weird, and was missing a bit of background, to make it work very well. Worth checking out regardless.

Took a much different path than I expected after the first episode, which IMO, is neither good or bad because i liked this but was also enjoying what i thought the bend of the show would be. I hadn't really heard to much about this before going in so i didn't have expectations, but i can see how that might affect opinions if you know what's up going in.

A hell of a concept that has a budget that allows a wild phantasmagoria -- though given so much of this takes place in a dream, much tension is unfortunately sacrificed. And for how unique and off-the-wall and completely unlike other shows I've seen, there's still a feeling of safety in tropes and eventual predictablility, as evident from its easy-going conclusion. Some episodes thrill and wildly subvert more than others, certainly makes for an intriguing watch, and the music is MVP.

Funny and interesting series with some moving rumination on mental health struggles via simulations. Very impressive and fun aesthetics and excellent performances across the board including a hilariously over the top Justin Theroux (nice to see his range after his mostly stoic and intense work in the excellent The Leftovers.) I'm looking forward to seeing more from these creators.

I just could not buy into the show and its ridiculous aesthetic and terrible pacing. The tone failed to impress me as did the off beat humour and weird set pieces. Just a misfire that is wasting the immense talent on the cast. Not really sure what the purpose was. Just too much to try and navigate and it takes too long to make any sort of point worth jumping on.

Cool worldbuilding but the quirky tone should've been a red flag for me. Gets aggressively stupid around ep 7

I gave this mini-series another try, my second attempt, and this time I managed to watch through to the fifth episode. The series, in conclusion, feels hollow and lacks any meaningful substance. Acting is ok, technical it's ok, but not a single dialogue that held any wisdom.

I'll admit I was ready to bail 3 or 4 eps in. I am glad I stuck with it. All the weirdness and frustrating pacing starts to come together and make sense.

Intrigue plot, interesting retro scifi environments and the frame story was the best. I also liked Emma Stone as a hitman. But the most in the middle was actually boring.

Really detested both of the main characters initially, but surprisingly came to root for them toward the end. Which felt a little warped. 😂 But it was good writing. And rapturous art direction, entertaining plot & concept, and a functional/not generic score.

Lovely to see Jonah Hill in a very atypical role. Most of the dream sequences were amazing, but outside them, the story lagged slightly. I was especially uninterested whenever Justin Theroux's character's subplot was advanced. Also, this lazy susan of genre cocktails offers such a large variety that inevitably there are offers that don't go down as well as others.

The cast saves this one - although the screenplay is uneven and suffers from bad pacing, the show is still carried by strong lead performances.

I absolutely love Emma Stone, so I had to watch this show. It's a crazy show, and Emma and Jonah Hill both do a great job in their roles, but I think sometimes the show gets a bit too ridiculous at times. Honestly, I almost wish they would have abandoned the real world aspect of it and just indulged in the weird dream sequences as the entire series.

Confusing and a little hard to follow at first but it picks up great in episode 2-3. After that, it is a very whimsical sci-fi with great acting by Hill and Stone.

Between Fukunaga and the cast, I feel like I should have loved this. And it was enjoyable in its breadth. But I just was never really engaged in the story and the whole thing felt more like an excuse to just make a bunch of different fun genre skits.

Unique and strange show. Very pleasant to watch. I don't typically make it through an entire seven hour film project, but this one was captivating. It exists in a weird space, constantly undulating from being creative and fascinating to ridiculously bland and lackluster. I wanted to like this a bit more than I did. It's missing pieces, and some things are just pretty awful or absurd. Jonah Hill's calming voice is all that redeems his uninspired acting. It's not bad. Definitely worth a try.

Great pilot+3 eps; the rest is shitty. I wanted to see the last episode, but the more time passed the less interested I was, so I ended in 9. The plot summary here nothing to do with the Series.

If you look closely this is essentially a more optimistic remake of Terry Gilliam's Brazil. The setup is much the same, the retrofuturism, the psychological pathologies involved. In some ways it's a bit of an upgrade, in other respects, it falters (e.g. it sometimes drags needlessly just to set up the next episode). Still though, worth a watch if only to see Jonah Hill really flex his acting chops.

Highlights are the 70's futuristic aesthetic as a neat diversion from the 80's nostalgia we have been inundated with lately. It reminded me of a melange of Charlie Kaufman films, notably Eternal Sunshine with a dash of Aronofsky's Pi. Stone is strong as usual, but this is the most acting I've seen Hill accomplish in one outing & Mizuno is starting to get on a bit of a streak. Fudge.
