Soul-sucking exercise in lopping off a beloved IP's limbs to make it fit, à la Boxing Helena, into the grim little coffin of a YA magical boarding school show. Unless you thought previous adaptations of Charles Addams' work were sorely missing various shades of white-bread teens going "OK, this is *weird*" or making the kind of youth culture references that seem appealingly hip to middle-aged screenwriters, I suggest you give this one a miss.

I tapped out after 2 episodes, but lots of people love this - & why wouldn't they? They seem to enjoy the constant one-liners that were also in the source movies. It also looks great. However, while I knew exactly who the Big Bad would be; & knew the Lead Mean Girl would become more sympathetic because she's black; most others won't. Also - as has been the case for the past 60 years - the edgy outsider is hero. The idea that Americans are taught to conform completely ignores popular culture.

seems enough time has passed to poop out harry potter clones again. burton's still a capable guy, but he can do only so much. ricci is a nice touch, ortega has some charm, but the writing starts mediocre and only goes downhill from there. it's only fitting that a show, that supposedly was to make a case for individualism and social pariahdom, ended up being a crowd pleaser and source for viral tiktok nonsense like the "wednesday dance".

I wasn't expecting to enjoy Wednesday as much as I did, and it's largely down to stellar performances from Ortega & Myers. I don't think I've warmed to the rest of the family members' casting yet, but I didn't hate Armisen as Fester...so that's an achievement in & of itself. There's a lot of teen drama, many predictable plot twists, and a few Netflix pet peeves, but the show remains adequately kooky & fun as it leans into its dark academia vibes.

The show removes almost everything that gives the Addams Family its charm in favour of making another Riverdale clone with Wednesday Addams thrown in as a selling point.

Looks good, Ortega is great, decent supporting cast. I just wish it wasn't so "YA" feeling, which is an odd thing to say about a show with multiple violent murders. I hope it ages a bit with its original audience a la Harry Potter. As it stands, its enjoyable, binge worthy , but not going to stick with you very long.

A lot of very pigeon-holed characters in this, but I think that's part of what makes it work. Ortega really knocks it out of the park.

Jenna Ortega commanded the screen like very few others have this year and the show was a smash hit because of it. Wednesday is full of dark witty humor and a sense of the supernatural that kept you guessing right up until the end. A very dark and twisted murder mystery is what is what unfolds at the core of the story. Probably the best new show of the year with a phenomenal cast and beautiful visuals to back up this new take on the Addams family lore. Solid in every way you want from a series.

Ortega carries this on her shoulders. She’s an inspired piece of casting and elevates the whole show. Much everything else is less admirable, but not unenjoyable. A tighter story with less obvious twists would have helped.

This somewhat toned down version of a Burton piece with an amazingly deep performance from Ortega is just right. Nothing too serious, enjoyable and a fun ride.

At close to 8 hours this runs almost thrice as long as the Sonnenfeld movies, and at that time it made me chuckle once. The series seems under the impression that people watch a series about Wednesday Addams to get a story about romance among a bunch of Hogwarts pupils. Anybody paying attention will have figured out the murder mystery about halfway through, the writing feels like bad fan fiction, the direction is generic and again, it’s not at all funny. Chipper werewolf girl was cool, though.

Shorter episodes would have made this better, it often felt like the episode was nearing the end and then there was still another 15 minutes.

Some great visuals, and obvi Ortega is a flawless casting choice, but the writing and plotting are both complete messes, Wednesday has been neutered of any traits beyond "edgy introvert", and the world is just a Rowling-esque remix right down to using 'normie' instead of 'muggle'. Millar & Gough were the wrong team to adapt the Addams family, and it's disappointing that Ricci agreed to be part of this.

I liked the dark, gothic tone of the series, but could have done for less of the teen drama. Felt too WB or CW for me. Also didn't like the focus specifically on Wednesday Addams. The entire family is interesting, and they should have shared the Netflix spotlight. Still, it entertains well enough, and I wasn't necessarily disappointed watching it.

While I was familiar with Jenna Ortega from having watched Jurassic World Camp Cretaceous and liked her there, this show definitely made me a fan of her. I'm not the most familiar with the Addams Family, but knew enough to appreciate some of the callbacks to it here. Overall, while I loved Jenna Ortega and also Emma Myers, I don't think the story was the strongest. Interesting enough to keep me going, but I hope they improve on it in season 2.

Entertaining enough but a little frustrating. Appreciated the anti-colonial commentary. I wish Wednesday would thank people particularly Enid or apologize when appropriate and ended up silent-shouting "just say (whatever)" at the screen a lot. At times it felt like it was written by someone who's out of touch and stuck in 2000s sense of humor and mindset, and some of the distinctly 2022 bits felt jarring with shoehorned in lines about Tik Tok and cancel culture for some reason.

A slightly more cynical version of Harry Potter, that draws too little on the fantastic Addams Family heritage. The actors are obviously much older than their characters, which break immersion. Still, I wasn't bored, so there's that.

The power of a strong central performance. I don't agree with the central idea of Wednesday in a school of "outcasts" or being bothered about a monster terrifying others. But, Jenna Ortega manages it to drag it forward, aided by select others in the cast (Emma Myers offering the contrast normally seen in The Addams Family). It's fine, it needs to step it up for series 2.

Pretty boring and didn't finish. I was excited because of Tim Burton but it's just doesn't feel like a Tim Burton piece. Story writing and dialog is uninventive. Feels like your typical high school drama story which I never enjoy to begin with.

Started off pretty good but then the usual problems with this type of series started appearing. The good build up was resolved poorly; promising plotlines ended up being left underdeveloped; side-characters ended up being mostly plot devices. A few more episodes could have made it great.

Visually dynamic and clever. Awesome casting. Good mystery. Even Wednesday's perpetual deadpanness and penchant to be comically grotesque didn't wear thin (in the first season). It would have been even better if the guys hadn't been on their periods for the whole season. But teens must teen, I guess? Definitely will watch season 2.

A lot of fun. A quirky dark comedy. Plot is typical, but still some twists. When I thought it was going to become disappointing it thankfully righted itself. I didn't think this would work, but it did and I'm a fan. I would have loved to have Wednesday as a role model growing up.

66 where "66" means it's watchable (Ortega does well as Wednesday - has too - but the writing, not so much) but at the same time it's a misfire, lacking the deep essence of strange that made series such a wild hit all those years ago. Starts OK but is overly long & develops into a misfit teen in school plot - sure she's a super misfit BUT, really, it becomes generic and THAT is a problem as things proceed even getting to a touch of the mawkish, which simply shouldn't be seen in any "Adams" show.

"Wednesday" is a consistently enjoyable offering benefiting from the fantastic atmosphere, captivating mystery, delicious humour and great cast helmed by the excellent, perfectly chosen Jenny Ortega as the titular character. The payoff might not be as strong as the set-up, but the show remains an endearing watch, equal measures spooky, dark, funny, angsty and, well, deathly. To be honest, the unmistakably 2022 vernacular feels a little cringey at times, but at least the intentions seem good.

Due to Wednesday's personality, Ortega had to play her in such a way that there's emotion, but it's hidden underneath. She does this in large part with her expressive eyes. She was great. And I got into the mystery and the characters. It's not always that funny but I certainly laughed out loud on occasion. I'm aware that I likely enjoyed this more than a lot of people, but I dug it even more than I expected to.
