Yeah, I get why this film made so much money. Despite Hollywood's love of bromances, films about feminine friendships (also Lesbians!) has been generally under-served. FGT is awfully clichéd in the feel-good Hollywood movie kind of way, but that didn't bother me that much, because in this case it doesn't feel like just another cynical Hollywood money grab; through all the cheesy, saccharine moments there is an actual heart and soul that shines through,

The music is atrocious, I hate Kathy Bates, and it was very cheesy and cliched. This could have been a decent film (I don't even like the novel it's based on), but certain scenes render this film unwatchable. They even managed to make the KKK look competly unfrightening.

Spoilers Ahead: I watched a movie where Mary Stuart Masterson was in a love triangle with the cokehead from Die Hard and for no reason at all a werewolf (Mad at the Moon) and I loved it, so watching her cleverly feed the nemesis she's murdered to the detective trying to prove her guilt is just par for the course as far as I'm concerned. What a lady!

The flashbacks format works well here and both stories are interesting. Kathy Bates is super sweet in the plot with her struggling marriage, while the elderly lady's story is itself the bread and butter here. The long run time of the film is never felt as a drag. My main criticism is the SPOILER downplayed Overton window-esque cannibalism theme towards the end - this was very unnerving and macabre and not funny and light-hearted, as they tried to make it. The vaginal commentary was bad too.

The core of the film is good. Masterson and Parker are clearly brave, non-conformists in an time and place where conformity is overvalued, and having their story inspire Bates to stand up for her own happiness is ... well, very nice. It's a difficult film to dislike. I general stand for any movie that features lesbian cannibals, especially if they are played by Oscar caliber performers.
