I feel like every season - Murder House, Asylum, Coven, Freak Show, all of 'em - gets off to an amusing start then just stalls out or spins into sheer dumb nonsense by the end. That said, the "Name Game" song sequence in Asylum is one of the greatest "Where the fuck did that come from?" scenes ever.

Season 2 is absolutely off-the-wall-batshit.

As long as you stay away from everything from season three onwards, you're in for some very entertaining bad television. The Murder House one was legitimately creepy at times, especially around the beginning back when I took it more seriously, and the Asylum season is simply hemorrhaging with incredible ideas, even if they aren't exactly organized in a coherent fashion. Jessica Lange shines in the first season, while the second belongs to the impishly evil Lily Rabe.

Every season they throw a ton of different horror tropes at the wall to see what will stick. The first season actually pulled them all together in a way that made sense, the rest .. not so much. Season two (asylum) was probably the best even though it didn't tie together. Believe it or not, the acting/directing is really solid in this show, the writing is what lets it down quite often.

Murder House - 68 / Asylum - 84 / Coven - 38 / Freak Show - 0/ This show is such a mixed bag. What was once an exciting and very unique voice within the sphere of television, quickly devolved into an aimless mess of stunts done for shock value and senselessness. Ryan Murphy is one of those people who should be allowed to pitch ideas to other people, and then be completely removed from the project afterwards because he just sucks at follow-through.

The best part of the show is the fantastic opening theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=omu0lDUcMP4 but unfortunately the show is not nearly as creepy as it should be as it's on cable.

A guilty pleasure perhaps, as it is a crass, dirty, batshit crazy mess. It still hasn't managed to rival its first season.

Possibly the most uneven show ever. Seasons 1 (Murder House), 6 (Roanoke), 9 (1984) and 11 (NYC) are all excellent for different reasons, but the rest ranges from average to truly terrible.

Rating this based on the first few seasons. I can't speak for the rest of the series, but since the seasons are only loosely tied together, you can watch a season as a standalone. And watching one season in a vacuum is alright, especially if you watch it around Halloween just for the ambiance or... something.

Peak Hollywood perversion and degeneracy. Repugnant and vile. Morally and intellectually bankrupt. Of course the creator is a narcissist who has three kids via surrogate. It's only a matter of time before he's unmasked as the next Weinstein. Shit like this makes me wish I didn't have a TV.

S1: 51 (meh), S2: 67 (the best overall because of the strong cast & sheer amount of bizarre content), S3: 56 (starts off as good as S2 but derails in the latter half), S4: 52 (great while John Caroll Lynch was the villain), S5: 43 (skip & watch a highlight reel of Evan Peters doing a psychotic version of Depp's Ed Wood). After getting Disney+ I skipped through 6-10, most of S9 1984 was decent - score of 60 or so - but the others were bad. From what I saw, S7 Cult is by far the worst of all.

[through season 12] Every season starts off compelling, then goes off the rails and you realize that they had no idea what to do with the story.

First few seasons are worth the watch. Seasons 1 and 2 are good, season 3 is mostly bad, season 4 is interesting, and it gets very bad after that.

This show is a clusterfuck of epic proportions. The experience is not dissimilar to watching The Room - the acting, script, direction and editing are all simultaneously AWFUL in a way that makes you think you might be losing your mind; some of the dialogue is just SO badly written and delivered. I think they were trying to be catchy and fresh with the 'unique' format but, they just Wiseau'd it all up. Only watched first 3 episodes in full 'can't look away from this car crash' kind of mode.

My only criticism of this entire series is that it is actually too graphically violent and sexual for my taste, but so well done from the acting and writing to the visuals.

Overall a good series with some seasons (Coven, Hotel and Roanoke (if you can get past the dry parts)) with good stories and others kinda meander around (Freak Show, Murder House and Asylum). Whatever you do, avoid AHS "Cult" by any means necessary!!!

First season only: Good acting and writing (though inconsistent) marred by a narrative empty of any meaning or any overarching goal besides some sort of fetish for appearing weird and depressing. Ends up being all over the place and doesn't know when or where to stop. Superficial at best, irritating at worst.

Great show, solid acting, memorable characters each season, and a strong story that benefits from its isolated season arcs, which means that someone can choose any season they want to start out with. the pacing is good and keeps you hooked and satisfied.

Been watching this as it pops up on Netflix. Loved Asylum, liked Freak Show & Hotel, Coven & Murder House were dumb but watchable, but Roanoke sucked, & got fed up halfway through the 2nd episode of Cult & quit. Looking forward to Apocalypse nonetheless.
