By the time I saw this, I had already heard the now classic Boy George title track a hundred times on the radio. Despite my confidence, I was surprised to learn that I only know about sixty percent of what there is to know about the crying game. And I'm pretty okay with that.

Being aware of the "surprise element" (I don't really want to call it a plot twist) didn't detract from this movie at all. Very moving picture with great performances by pretty much everyone.

Its reputation is, unfortunately, quite a bit better than reality. Plot points are often pretty silly. Still, you can't say you've seen anything like it before.

"The Crying Game" is weird and dreary. Can't say I liked it, but it intrigued me. I guess when something as peculiar as this comes along, it's a love-it-or-hate-it affair. It didn't do it for me. There are certainly good moments and the first part is great, but once the plot moves to London, my interest started to decrease. My problem was that I couldn't identify with any of the characters -neither Rea's Fergus nor Davidson's Dil. It is an interesting film, but, ultimately, I found it pointless.

This is a tough movie to pin down... part political thriller, part offbeat romance, part psychological drama. But I think the jumbledness of it was what I ultimately liked about it. The performances aren't that great, the cinematography is nothing special, and taken individually, the plot points are either goofy or clichéd. Somehow, though, it all gels into something rather captivating. I found myself wanting to see what would happen next, and becoming involved in the developing relationship.

I've been hearing jokes about this movie's twist since it came out, so the biggest shock for me is that it actually happens just over halfway through and has almost no impact on the overarching plot. If it weren't for the fascinatingly incongruous Dil character this would be a fairly unremarkable IRA thriller. In fact, the "twist" seems to be less "surprise, she's a man!" and more that it's a transgender character study masquerading as a prestige action thriller. And I think that's kinda cool.

I guess this was seen as pretty forward-thinking for trans people in cinema at this time? Or at least the Academy Awards thought so. Which is strange, the film isn't really Oscar-bait - it does juggle some intriguing themes but apart from that the film is actually still quite transphobic (which I can't really separate from the narrative) and also really shitty in most other ways too. Big shout-out to the director blaming box office failure on the IRA too! No excuse for a shitty film

While Parker creates some moments worthwhile, as he is trying to be bold, he oftenly steps on stupidity . Performances save most of the movie if one can get over meaningless sentiments about relationship and love.

What begins as a thriller unexpectedly turns into a poignant and ironic love story, with plot twists that deepen the film's almost dreamlike power. Stunningly acted by Rea, Richardson, and Whitaker, with an amazing debut by Davidson, as Dil. A unique, seductive film that Jordan pulls off with poetic ease.

It's a well made drama that certainly holds your interest, but in hindsight it all seems a bit shallow. The surprises are not essential to the film but they do seem to be what makes it something more than an average well acted drama.

Even though the acting is quite weak (especially Whitaker) it is an interesting and touching story. A bit too dated for a 20 years old movie, but maybe the times have changed and I haven't noticed it. Richardson has a knack for playing annoying characters.

Everyone knows the twist by now, and it definitely changes the viewing experience. I really wish I had been able to see this without any prior knowledge, but the film still works, regardless of what information you have going into it. Jaye Davidson is a revelation.

It's kind of silly, innit? I mean, it ends with "Stand By Your Man" playing over the end credits. COME ON! Forest Whitaker is pretty great in it, though and I did know the twist beforehand, so maybe that had something to do with it.

I can appreciate at an intellectual level the complexity of the narrative and the characters. Also, the early portion of the film with Whitaker is well done prisoner drama. But the suspension of disbelief required for the latter portion of the film, both before and after the central twist, makes it difficult to appreciate where the film goes. Plus the only people who don't seem confused about their identities are those who blow people away in the street. Not really balanced characterizations.

Profoundly bizarre, deeply subversive and utterly stupefying. It's only flaw is that it does feel like it panders to the anxieties of hetero males, which frankly undermines its humanization of trans people.

Completely random story elements mashed together. The IRA plot is just movie-land, and the sexual stuff unconnected to the longings of the characters. Also there's the fuckin' story about the scorpion and the frog being told again, the first time for fatalism, the second time for sentimentality. Well, I guess if the pathos is not in the story, you gotta invent some meaning from the outside.

Beginning to think Neil Jordan only has one movie he makes over and over again. The plot progression makes sense from point to point but feels disjointed overall (cf. Mona Lisa), and on top of that, there are of course the two enormous landmines politically. I think a case could be made that the generally sympathetic trans portrayal is ahead of its time for 1992, but the IRA depiction is completely indefensible.

Look, I know this came out in a very different time, but transphobia is just so deeply baked into this narrative that I find myself utterly unable to separate that aspect from the actual craft of the film. The cinematography and acting are outstanding throughout, but even beyond the issues with Dil as a character playing into the stereotypical "trans women as deceivers" plot, her forced detransition at the hands of Rea's character had me actively rooting for her to kill him at the end.

Odd and interesting film, but probably more toward the odd side. A strange mix of elements with good performances and a strange tone. I didn't really like it all that much, but it was difficult to look away at times. A unique experience.
