The Salvation

There was once a age when every single movie made in Hollywood had the exact same plot as the Salvation. This movie works because it was made in an age where every single movie made in Hollywood is a Transformers sequel and we've all forgotten the about the time when villains wore black hats, small towns were afraid of sunset, and silent protagonists were at their best serving revenge cold.

If I had a mikkel for every time I've seen this plot... I didn't want the terrible thing to happen to warrant revenge. I wasn't satisfied with the revenge. I didn't need additional terrible things to occur to warrant further revenge, and by the time that revenge started taking place I was too removed from the film to care.

A bizarrely stripped-down, through-the-motions Western that takes us EXACTLY where we expect it to in EXACTLY the time and manner we expect, so that by the end we're just sort of forcing ourselves through it, almost like it's a movie we've seen two or three times already. Mikkelsen's always watchable, but this "revenge on the frontier" template was already formula when Eastwood was doing it four decades ago.

A slow burning redemption western. No surprise at Mads Mikkelsen's flawless performance, but Eva Green wasn't half bad either.

A pleasant surprise. Higher quality than what usually comes out of Denmark. The movie keeps it's course throughout and does not deviate from it's introvert style. Unfortunately they skipped an extra view on the CGI before releasing it. - Good.

Not a particularly original revenge Western, but it has a few moments worth seeing. Overall, it's disappointing, but it may be worth seeing if you're a fan of the genre.

Sergio Leone created the spaghetti-western. Maybe the time has come now for the smørrebrød-western. There really hasn't been a really good western in a while. While this is not one of the best westerns I have seen it is one of the best in recent years. Mikkelsen does a good job of playing a man bent on revenge, but Jeffery Dean Morgan really steals the movie. He is a perfect choice for a rough and unlikable cowboy.Morgan turns in a movie stealing performance much like Kilmer did in Tombstone.

1300: it was a good film for my 1300th ranked movie! tell the story with patient. 1 hour takes to pull the trigger of revenge and 30 minutes to take it!

Not particularly original but as a neat little revenge thriller transplanted to frontiertime it's worth watching for its mean streak and sexy Eva Green (not nude in this one strangely) and the ever great Mads Mikkelsen.

One of the better westerns, to be sure, with better pacing than most. The CGI was quite weak though, and I can't understand why one would choose to shoot a film of this nature in digital. Totally anachronistic. Still, these technical errors are overshadowed by Mads Mikkelsen's badassness.

Mads 'Danish Powerhouse' Mikkelsen continues his string of spot-on performances as yet another silent tormented soul, whose face is shimmering with brutally honest emotions. The Salvation starts off as a great exploration of 1870s America and the problematic lives of its immigrants. About 15 minutes in, a mediocre scene marks the plot start for a good ol' redemption plot, after which the film follows a rather formulaic turn of events typical to the western genre.

Good-looking but aesthetically uneven western homage. The digital/CGI look doesn't always fit this kind of material. And it's dramatically and morally too simplistic for its own good when it's not backed up by a strong sense of style. Mikkelsen is solid and Eva Green's mute minx is especially memorable. I'd like to see a follow-up revenge western with Green in the lead. Sad she doesn't get much screen time in this one.

A straightforward and familiar Western story with characters and performances that are just compelling enough to make it marginally worthwhile.

Great one if you are looking for a Western revenge movie. A simple plot but excellent performances and cinematography.

Very run of the mill plot-wise, and with most of the characters too. The novelty was having a near silent protagonist coming from a different part of Europe than the average western immigrants. It's watchable though, it does its job even without fanciness in the task.

It starts out a whole lot better than it ends up being. An interesting story turns very generic and it's only being kept interesting with Mikkelsen, JDM, Eva Green and Persbrandt. Some beautiful scenes but in the end it feels just a bit too hollow. Why does it feel that each time we see the man with his beautiful wife and child, we have to expect the wife and child will always die in the very beginning of the movie to warrant a motive for the main character? It's been done enough already.

I never know how to rate these movies, because westerns are just NOT my cup of tea. So on an objective note I can appreciate the production... and of course my Danish guy Mikkelsen.

What you have here is a typical revenge story. It's hard to really root for anyone but Jon's family and later on Madeline. The villain is plenty evil and the townspeople are a bunch of cowardly jerks that are willing to live a little longer at the cost of innocent lives. It's a bit of a depressing watch, but I thought it was a fine movie. Not great, but if you like westerns you'll probably enjoy this one.

Revenge western that is formulaic af, but is pretty fun. Mikkelsen is a badass.

Uninspired bland story without any depth or inventiveness, annoyingly bad CGI (really was distracting), mediocre scenery, no character build-up whatsoever and a severe lack of badassness. Two good things only: Mads Mikkelsen and the fact that Eva Green doesn't say a word.

Fairly predictable revenge western with a large body count but still enjoyable - and interesting the way female roles are developed in modern westerns.although Eva Green definitely under used.

The build up is good, and the circumstances are weirdly appealing. Unlike other revenge movies this one waits until quite late for the justice to be delivered. It's OK, but after the action ends, it feels like many steps were missing. A bizarre role for Eva Green as she does not speak and does not get naked. It also seemed they tacked on a message about Oil being bad, emphasized by some awful CGI as they roll credits. JDM in a role that feels like a trial for Negan.

Utterly generic film with poor writing and directing. The one reason to watch this is to see Mikkelsen be cool. Which he is. But not enough. Sad face.

Stylish and well acted (even Cantona is decent!), but the script is not quite there.

recommendable for genre fans. nice cast, too. shame about the whole (kind of fake) look of the film & terrible cgi.

Klasik konusuna rağmen zevkle izlenen katıksız kovboy filmi. Tek eksi yanı olarak uzun uzun bakışmalar sebebiyle bazı sahnelerde tempo fazlasıyla düşüyor. Diğer taraftan çok iyi bir oyuncu kadrosu var ve bu film içindeki oyunculukları da gayet başarılı.

Good film.
