The "boy next door, if that boy spent lots of time alone in the basement," is how Rich Cohen described Kyle MacLachlan in a 1994 article for "Rolling Stone" magazine. That distinctly askew wholesomeness made MacLachlan a natural to become famous as the alter ego of twisted director David Lynch. Born and a raised in Yakima, Washington, MacLachlan graduated from the University of Washington in 1982. The darkly handsome actor made his feature debut when he starred in the big-budget David Lynch adaptation of Frank Herbert's Dune (1984), but only enjoyed real success after appearing in a second Lynch project, the moody and perverse classic Blue Velvet (1986).

I wanted to like this more than I do. The set designs and soundtrack are absolutely superb. But the actual plot and writing leave so much to be desired, especially when compared to the writing and plot of the actual Fallout games. Walton is clearly the highlight of the series. Maybe one of the best character actors of our time.

Faithful in every minute detail to the games that inspired it, this adaptation still manages to meaningfully build on the lore. The characters and actors portraying them are great, and the balance of comedy and graphic violence is just like the games. Seriously, you'll be surprised at the amount of dismemberment here. It poses the same moral conundrums about which faction to support, and how that changes. I sure hope season 2 isn't derailed by "ANOTHER SETTLEMENT NEEDS YOUR HELP".

Pretty loose assortment of callbacks to the games and ella purnell looks AI-generated with those almost uncanny valley cartoon eyes. Took me out at times, but also strangely fits with the quirky heightened reality of fallout. Its lovingly crafted and meticulous world(re-)building is definitely the highlight and make up most of my rating, but plotwise there's not a lot to cling on to and the interesting stuff is either dropped or to be continued, which should be a certainty at this point.

FO has thankfully clearly been adapted with love and (maybe too much) reverence. Appreciate how it dovetails w/ empathetic FO4 vibe, haters be damned. A lot of the time it nails the aesthetic, sometimes the feel. Often though its like an odd theme park for fans that imitates but rarely matches the excitement. Sadly it does emulate the shaggy dog 'main quest' and wet-towel chars making daft choices - zany sidequests/chars are lacking. Main theme and Vault-Tec toons are also painful omissions!

A perfectly serviceable screen adaptation of a rich and vibrant videogame universe. I think it does a good job of the simultaneously incredibly dark but also goofy tone of the games, particularly in the rapid loss of innocence of a vault dweller thrown head first into the brutality of the wasteland. Crucially though it does not pander too much to the videogame-iness of the source, and while the narrative themes will be familiar to players, there's plenty of new things here to enjoy.

All of the trappings of Fallout, but you get the sense that the script could have easily been repurposed for the upteenth Marvel-movie. This is particularly the case with the final 2 episodes, where the plot waffles about cartoonishly evil corporations doing things that make not one iota of sense. Plus, what at first looks like it may be character development is just little more than 2D character tropes, recycled. A real shame given that the first 5 episodes were a fun bit of Fallout.

I could swear that the following conversation took place during the pre-production phase of the series, but I cannot prove it: `What happens if we adapt the Man in Black from Westworld, whose potential we squandered, to the Fallout universe?` Good job, Nolan.

Well I really enjoyed it. Ella Purnell and Walton Goggins knock it out of the park, the rest of the cast isn't bad either. The tone is spot on: horrifying with moments of dark hilarity. I can't say why without spoiling, but I'm very excited for series 2 already.

Lots of positives: great world building (from the games), great art direction, music, acting, vfx. Love the tone, the sense of place, the distinctively subversive Fallout sense of humor (Dr. Strangelove seems like an obvious influence). Negatives:the main character arcs don't quite come off in the finale, imho. The ride along the way is fun but the destination isn't alll that.

Manages to be both faithful to the games (well, most of them) and an independent story. As a fan of the 3-D games, I appreciate the effort to come up with a brand new story. Fallout as an IP is a treasure trove, and I'm excited where they go for the second season.

As a Fallout freak since the original Wasteland, I was stunned by the show's loyalty to the nitty gritty visual details and lore from the games - I actually had to keep pausing and explaining references to my gf. I have mixed feelings about the original plot, though - there is a lot of fun to it, but it's very much the usual maudlin TV melodrama and the season finale is cheesy AF.

Watched the first two episodes. It's the same soulless garbage that somehow passes for TV these days. I'm guessing the high ratings are due to the show being faithful to the games, which gives people their yearly nostalgia fix, and not because of any merit the show itself has.

Pretty much a perfect adaptation with a story very much on par with the games. On top of that, the world feels just right. But do I enjoy watching this? Not much There's a dark cynicism here that just doesn't appeal to me in any way, and I can't find myself caring much for any of the characters.

This really isn't too bad. It was entertaining, had some interesting characters. The story is pretty barebones even with the "twist" but I didn't mind too much. It feels like a Fallout world, lots of stuff pulled from the games for fans to enjoy. I would watch a second season.

A relatively accurate adaptation from the video game series. The bits involving the vaults (and the vault dweller) are pretty great, as well as anything Walton Goggins does on screen. Wasn't loving the depiction of the Brotherhood of Steel. Felt they missed the mark there. I went into it skeptical, but ended up rather enjoying the entire experience and looking forward to the next season.

For me, it is a huge success; it feels so authentic in every piece of the setting. While it is constantly cheeky, playing on the edge of being a farce but never falling into that. Goggins is one of the best actors of this generation; overall, the cast is brilliant. The visuals are perfect; they really captured the advertisement-driven apocalypse peculiarity of Fall-out; the last episode and denouement were not up to the rest of the series, but I will definitely watch the second season.

Although the series begins by presenting a post-apocalyptic world in the vein of The Last of Us or Twisted Metal, the depth with which it rounds out and builds its lore and the dangerous, but mystery-filled world it slowly unveils is fascinating. I also loved the depth of character arcs at play, something that is often missing from a typical science fiction series. I'm very excited to see where this one goes. One of the year's best new series.

Color me impressed. I wouldn't have thought a Fallout adaptation would turn out this good. It has all the references you could want without feeling intrusive and the storytelling is the most Fallout that Fallout has Fallout'ed since New Vegas. I'm actually looking forward to the next installment of this show unlike the next inevitable Bethesda disaster.

I've never played a Fallout game beyond the first couple hours, so I may not be the best person to ask about this, but everybody says it is a very faithful adaptation to the universe, and regardless, it's just a really good show, even if you aren't already a fan of the games. I imagine this show has likely encouraged a lot more people to try out the games.

Great soundtrack/sets. Some Initially compelling mysteries/comedy. But the writing is ridiculous. There's a creative & amusing satiric story at the core, but it's an internally inconsistent mess, relying on constant contrivances & seemingly contradictory character choices in order to fit the writers' grand narrative plan & checklist of plot twists. I haven't played the games, but I guess they're the source for most of the comedy & creative aspects, especially the artistry/mood of retrofuturistm.

Pleasantly surprised to see how they handled this, considering how videogame adaptations usually tend to go. The world building, character writing and attention to detail is second to none, everything screams "Fallout" and they keep a nice balance of a dark tone and your usual Fallout corniness. I do have issues with the narrative and how they portrayed certain factions though and it remains a growing concern of mine considering where they're headed with Season 2, but fingers crossed I guess.

The world of Fallout with all of its competing factions, personalities and history can't really be condensed into eight episodes. But it's too high budget a premise to expect more. This show is entertaining, and it did what it could well - despite deviations from the overall world. It's a partial reimagining, but it completely nails the aesthetic and style of the series.

The constructed and insincere elements in the movie make it impossible for me to be emotionally engaged, resulting in a lack of interest in the unfolding events. It is clearly meant to be this way, it's a style. The resemblance to a video game in terms of shallowness could potentially be accounted for by its source material being a video game. I admit a big part of my distaste for this show comes from my knowledge of the games but even if that wasn't the case I'd hate a lot of its dumb plot beats especially its twist on why the apocalypse happened. But considering this, I really don't like how little the show cares to explore the ideological conflict that defined the Fallout series instead opting for interpersonal character drama. I MAY have been okay with this if they didn't think they needed to butcher the lore to achieve this.
