August Rush (2007)
The story of a charismatic young Irish guitarist and a sheltered young cellist who have a chance encounter one magical night above New York's Washington Square, but are soon torn apart, leaving in their wake an infant, August Rush, orphaned by circumstance. There's a potentially good movie that could be made from this premise, but this strange, atonal mess isn't it - intercutting between the parents and Highmore never works, and as we rarely see Rhys-Meyers and Russell together, their mystical connection is never convincing. Fatally torpedoed by Williams' unsettling pederast who seems to have come from a different (and darker) film; the film as a whole wavers with uncertainty between a dark and light tone, and then completely flops at the finale.
