Beautiful romantic, heart-warming family-movie, a real fairy tale, a perfect end and great music-scenes. Oh yes, a nice, strange role of Robin Williams, which was marvelous. One of the best music-movies !

Provides so much bad acting and terrible musical faking that really ends up churning out a laugh at least every minute. This movie is actually one of the most willfully cheesy and badly sentimental movies I've ever seen. It is a disgrace to anyone who has emotions, and especially anyone who knows what music is. The only saving grace in this movie is William Sadler who is actually only on screen for about thirty seconds.

So predictable it hurts and the most one dimensional characters ever put on screen. But Robin Williams is amazing as the child collecting gay urban cowboy.

This is one of the WORST films I've ever seen. Ech. Awful. So over-the-top treacly and sickeningly sweet. One of the worst.

Few movies try to manipulate your emotions and fail so hard. This could have been a decent, enjoyable movie about someone's passion for music if not for the obviously forced sentimental soap-opera drivel. And who in their right mind thought Robin Williams' character was a good idea?

For the music alone I give it a 60. For the complete rip-off of Oliver Twist and the lousy ending I give it no more than 6 more points.

Bit too sentimental for me, and Robin Williams playing the "scumbag" made it reeeeallly creepy. When Williams over acts and on top of that plays a nasty character, it becomes almost too nasty, especially for this movie.

So terribly predictable and boring. It tries hard to be manipulative but it can't even manage that.

Very predictable and somewhat unrealistic, subpar acting from Jonathan Rhys Meyers and kinda cheesy, but... it's got really nice music, some beautiful cinematography and I liked the story quite a lot. Admittedly this might have to do with the fact that I have some personal connections with the classical music world in New York.

It is not totally bad, but predictable too much, is not convincing, unless you are super sensitively.

A pleasant, often beautiful, story about the power of music, love, and family. Freddie Highmore is great, the music mostly wonderful, and the message inspiring. Parts were rather strange, though, and it took a while for me to get into it. If you insist upon realism in your movies, this is probably not for you. I enjoyed it overall, though.

Quite possibly one of the worst movies I have seen thus far. It had good intentions, but it just did EVERYTHING WRONG. This is an example of how to make a bad movie. Its only redeeming merit is that you can all watch it in a group, and make fun of it together.

There's a potentially good movie that could be made from this premise, but this strange, atonal mess isn't it - intercutting between the parents and Highmore never works, and as we rarely see Rhys-Meyers and Russell together, their mystical connection is never convincing. Fatally torpedoed by Williams' unsettling pederast who seems to have come from a different (and darker) film; the film as a whole wavers with uncertainty between a dark and light tone, and then completely flops at the finale.

Surprisingly immersive film. Despite including ingredients to render it a little sickly sweet, August Rush treads a tightrope of gratuitous casting decisions, gimmicky little musical hooks and triumphs, mainly through Freddie Highmore's performance as August, which sparkles optimism and vulnerability throughout.

It's easy to detest smarmy musical prodigies who can play like a genius without ever having touched an instrument, and it's also easy to detest awful writers and film directors who haven't an original idea in their heads and borrow most of their scenes/shots from other movies. Sappy, sickening, predictable, bland, and beyond credulity... are just a few of the terms which don't come close to fully describing how much of a let down this movie was.

Finally, the connections and near-connections between music and spirituality are worth exploring. At one point, August says of his internal melody, "It's like someone is calling to me. Writing it all down is like calling back to them ... the ones who gave me the music." (pluggedin.com)

August Rush is the charming story about a young boy who wishes to find his parents through the means of music. Inspirational, wonderful, and musically sensational are a few words to describe this movie. There were a few odd parts thrown in throughout which seemed awkward and out of place, but overall, August Rush is definitely worth your time and money.

This movie is like biting into a raw popsicle with sensitive teeth or injecting pure sugar into a cavity. Everything from the overly precious protagonist to the fantastical depiction of music education is cringe worthy. The only reason I didn't rank this lower was because it was too painful to be boring, and being boring is the worst sin a movie can make.

It lays on the schmaltz real thick, but as strange and cheesy and ultimately creepy it often feels, it's not an entirely bad film. I mean it's totally preposterous, but not necessarily bad. Of course a movie so heavily entrenched in music is only as good as its original score, and this one's is surprisingly good considering the composer's previous credits. Russell and Rhys Meyers give good performances too, all things considered. Starring Robin Williams as a street-busking child pimp.

Oh dear oh dear. Absolutely ridiculous! It's an insult to music and the genius that some people possess when it comes to music and the arts. If a movie like this is to be made then it should be tasteful - not manipulative, cheesy and WAY OVER THE TOP like this one.

Absolutely loved this one. If I'm honest I have to admit that this film is too melodramatic, too theatrical and too unbelievable to gain a high score, but really, I don't care. This story about music and the love for music is inspirational, beautiful and emotional. It made me smile and it made me warm inside. I don't even care about the rest.
