A movie with a premise this delightfully absurd has no business being so slow and dull, with the titular monsters having far less screen time than they should. This movie is more interesting if viewed as the wacky origin story for both Peter McCallister and Marv from Home Alone.

A boring but engaging story, full of notable faces elevating a bloated script, featuring a wonky but endearingly goofy creature, together makes for a classic mixed-bag of an 80's horror/sci-fi B-movie. Admittedly I've now spent an embarrassing amount of time trying to come up with a clever alternative definition for C.H.U.D., but I'm really struggling to come up with anything...Cantankerous Hillbilly Umbrella Distributors...no...maybe...Canned Hippo Urine Drinkers...I should probably just stop.

Another stalwart of video shops in the 80s that I've only just managed to catch up on. It really wasn't worth the wait. The C.H.U.Ds themselves are nicely horrible, but we don't see enough of them, or see them doing much at all. Lots of "it's that guy" moments, though: John Heard, Daniel Stern, Sam McMurray, Frankie Faison and a wonderful early John Goodman burger scene. And at least it gives Homer's line "And then the C.H.U.Ds came..." some context. A daft cult cheapie.

It has a cheesy charm, but the uninteresting story and lack of real cool C.H.U.D. action drag it down. I'd be very ok with a remake, since there is a lot of potential in the concept.

Strictly speaking, this film is pretty bad, but my score is for how well it lives up to its B-movie cult classic status & it does that exceedingly well. Like all great camp, the laughs in this seem to be wholly unintentional w/ the film actually starting off unexpectedly sober w/ actors who can act & a script that not only offers distinct characters, but shows enough forethought to raise the stakes by making someone pregnant. So when the wheels start coming off, the laughs are unpredictable.

The infamous subterranean horror has more interesting stories of people watching this as kids or seeing the box in the video store than the actual movie. Great cast but they simply just run around from place to place. Too few CHUDs. Or is CHUD plural?

I thought C.H.U.D had a lot of promise, but just fell massively short. The plot was pretty interesting to me, but there was a serious lack of action. Basically I wanted to see more people get murdered by Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dwellers.

Tepid horror/thriller has far too much going on and can never settle on what it wants to be - an intriguing premise is left unfulfilled thanks to an unfocused government conspiracy subplot, as well as the shoddy, giggle-inducing makeup for the CHUDs. A few minor jump scares are effective early on, and it's fun to see Heard and Stern team up, even if both gifted actors are given precious little to do. Many 'before-they-were-famous' bit parts add a little contemporaneous fun.

For a movie about cannibalistic humanoid underground dwellers this has some heavy hitting acting. You'd think a script got swapped as a joke on the set of NYPD Blue and it went too far. The CHUD's themselves are a little too few and too far between so with a title like this you're exceptions are for gorier dumber exploitation. I can see why this would be a let down for some but I found it to be a diamond in the rough.

This schlocky monster movie with a sincere political agenda does bear a passing resemblance to the work of Larry Cohen, but its lack of energy, invention, and most crucially, abandon, demonstrate why Cohen was the best at this sort of thing. John Heard had recently given phenomenal and totally distinct performances in CUTTER'S WAY and CHILLY SCENES OF WINTER; Cohen woulda considered it cinematic malpractice to give him so little to do. Or at least to let him look so bored doing it.

When there are actually monsters on the screen it's bareable, but there is just not enough of the monsters killing to make up for the unfunny badness of many aspects. The greatest thing in this movie is Daniel Stern at such a young age.

C.H.U.D. was kind of a dud. It seemed like it had a high chance of being entertaining, but instead, I felt bored most of the time. I do think the creature design was pretty cool. I loved the creatures glowing eyes and fish mouths. I also love the idea of radioactive monsters in the sewers of New York. It's like a group of killer Ninja Turtles. I just felt like the movie dragged on and on. Plus the twist at the end was actually pretty dumb... [Full Review]

Nice and pulpy little gore flick set in a dirty New York. Seems to meander a lot trying in earnest to make some sort of political point (real Reagan era stuff like deregulation and the mentally ill being forced to live on the streets) , and the actors, though usually solid, seem to be poorly directed (nigh uneditable line flubs and all that). But yeah, pulpy and fun, you could do MUCH worse with a film like this.

A version of Ghostbusters in which the heroes battle it out with the guy from the EPA while the Stay Puft Marshmellow Man demolishes downtown. Also, possibly missteps in its apparent attempt to humanize the homeless when it turns them into flesh-eating monsters.

This gross, strange, little film shows heart along with the blood, sweat, and tears of the filmmakers in every frame of the film. Fun and gross at the same time, it can be said for sure that they just don\'t make movies like this anymore!

A surprisingly good 80's horror flick in the vein of Return of the Living Dead--the soundtrack is even similar. The cast is a lot of very good character actors, and even when the film is being satirical it keeps its tongue in cheek. Some real creepy scenes in this one too.

I have seen C.H.U.D. on a few 'best cult movies' lists, and while it is decent Friday night flick to watch with friends, it's hardly a 'best of' material. I liked the characters and acting (Home Alone guy and the mustachioed cop rule), but it's supposed to be HORROR comedy, ffs! There is not enough action. Cannibalistic humanoid underground dwellers barely get screen time; even the boss-baddie is a corrupt politician, and not some extra cool cannibalistic humanoid underground dweller...

This is a fun '50s-type monster movie. It's marred by ragged editing, but an appealing cast in offbeat roles and good makeups by John Caglione, Jr., make this a pleasant surprise.

This is a fun low budget creature feature. It was fun to see how many of the actors I recognize and this reminded me of a Larry Cohen movie, in a good way.
