I would’ve torn London apart by doing the Ace Ventura talking butt cheeks on stage way back yonder. I liked this but I have zero desire to watch any Laurel and Hardy films, but, it did lead me into looking at their Wikipedia entry and hooting over what they’re called around the world “The Clumsy Fat and Thin”

Enjoyable enough, no forced conflict, the actors are pretty much perfect for their roles, gets considerably better as it goes on, very sweet and endearing without sacrificing the dilemma Ollie faces in regards to his health and his craft. I'm really no Laurel and Hardy fan, but I'm certainly a Coogan and Reilly fan.

A pair of terrific performances from Reilly and (especially) Coogan, who also convincingly recreate L&H's comic chemistry, elevate an otherwise uncertain and unfocused rendering of L&H's SPINAL TAP years. Depiction of both men as proud and dignified survivors undercuts what could have been a clichéd wallow in sentiment, but this means they both wind up inscrutable as personalities (and robbing Reilly of a death scene flattens the punch of the finale).

If you can appreciate that the humour was "of its day" and you are not expecting S&O to send you into belly laughs, then you can enjoy this film as a touching, moving and beautifully acted biopic of two men away from their public personae; their difficult relationship (and wives), their shared successes and failures, and how they were exploited financially all their lives. The film does play out like the longest death scene in cinema history, but hats off to Coogan and Reilly, absolutely spot on

C - Really excellent performances from Coogan and Reilly as the great duo, every mannerism on and off stage is pretty much perfect. The re-enactment of classic bits on stage is executed well. The "new" double door routine works. The two wives are good fun, but it's all about Coogan and Reilly, and they carry it.

Top badass moment? Laurel & Hardy ARE comedy badass; they invented funny. I would say I grew up watching far too much of them, but that’s not actually possible. This film is nice, and sweet, and so very wholesome. If it was edible it would be a superfood; (but not blueberries because they're overrated rubbish). It really doesn’t amount to much when you think about it afterwards, but then again why would it? C&R nail it too, which makes a huge difference. No cats, chainsaws or decapitations.

This is a well made film. Both Steve Coogan and John C. Reilly give good performances in this movie. The script does not have a lot of surprises but has many good moments. Overall I would recommend this film.

A suitable funny and tragic film about the partnership of Stan and Ollie. Both Reilly and Coogan are convincing in their portrayal of the two comedy legends, although they do veer into the saccharine at times.

A pleasant meditation on decline. Coogan and Reilly are superb mimics of Laurel and Hardy.

Kind of suffers bc it feels like the trailer summed up the whole movie.I don't feel it accurately portrays their original work, which isn't as goofy as it appears here. Maybe it's why other reviewers are so dismissive of L&H shorts. Def check out this movie, but do yourself a favor and watch some quality shorts such as "Dirty Work". Coogan and Reilly perfectly land the characters.

Stan & Ollie captures the zeitgeist of Laurel & Hardy's twilight, giving their final hurrah a sweet and subdued end. While I was peripherally aware of the iconic duo I wouldn’t have called myself a fan and it was Coogan and his penchant for comedic impressions that drew me to the film. He and Reilly are great capturing the duo's timing but it's Arianda and Henderson who steal every scene they're in. Ultimately a success of a biopic as it presents an engaging tale even if it’s never exciting.

The recreation of the duo's stage sketches are pretty magical, and there's some fun from the later cameo's from their respective wives. However, it's all just a bit safety first, cosy, nice-y nice-y, even when we're arguing we haven't properly fallen out, schmalz. Fine, but fairly instantly forgettable.

Both lead actors did an excellent job portraying Laurel and Hardy. This is well done and touching movie about the end of their careers.

Cosy Sunday afternoon teatime fare is clearly paper-thin as a biopic, positioning itself as an affectionate tribute to the great comic duo. Reilly and Coogan are uncanny as Laurel and Hardy, and one wishes they had a deeper script to really explore the complex relationship between Stan & Ollie. Ollie’s wife is squeaky-voice, nagging Shirley Henderson while Stan’s comes across as an evil Russian out of a Bond movie.

Perhaps I'm overrating this one a little, it's just so nice to watch a film that understands how to develop characters and draw the audience in. A simple story but well written, acted and directed, which lightly pulls on your heartstrings in all the right ways. There's some 'artistic licence' guff (no way would they ever be playing to almost-empty theatres) but this makes Laurel & Hardy feel alive again, and you care about their careers coming to an end as much as they do.

The performances of the leads, as well as the overall look of the film, are the strengths here. But the whole thing is wrapped in an unfortunately bland packaging, leaving me almost just shrugging my shoulders at the movie in retrospect. Too bad.

Makes the wise decision to focus on the decline period of S+O when they couldn't get arrested in Hollywood and were forced to go on the theatre circuit. Unfortunately, the actual story is told in a superficial fashion, and it's only the performances of Coogan and Reilly that save it from being your average Netflix film of the month. Their recreations of the duo's famous comic routines are well done, and it's in these moments that this nostalgic tribute to a bygone era comes into its own.

A lot of the conversations here seem based on conjecture (& Coogan says so in the special features), but this achieves a lot of what it's going for: an appreciation of the duo's comedic skills that makes you curious to see more; & a sad & ultimately moving story about 2 men whose civility & respect towards one another seems to sustain a partnership & friendship that a less courteous team might have lost over each person having the intractable feeling that he'd been done wrong by the other.

Laurel ile Hardy'nin arkadaşlık hikayesi. Komedi filmleriyle ünlü ikili, İngiltere'ye dönüp komedi tiyatro yapmaya giderler. Robin Hood filminde oynamak için çok çalışırlar. İkilinin hayatları sıkıntılı geçiyor. Filmin ritm sorunu da var. Bazı sahneler iyiyken, diğer sahnelerde sofistike ön plana çıkmış. Filmin sonunda kırgınlıklar, barış sağlanıp bitmesi sevindirici. John C.Reilly çok iyi. Ölüm bizi ayırana kadar show devam edecek.

For a lifelong Laurel & Hardy fan, this was heartwarming. That's exactly how you want to imagine them being in real life. A carbon copy of their screen personas. Steve Coogan & John C. Reilly sure were spitting images of the duo! I hope, now that they've done the biography of them, that they start doing actual Laurel & Hardy movies. Maybe use the material Stan Laurel kept writing until his death, or even that Robin Hood movie they were chasing through-out Stan & Ollie (2018)?

Heartwarming tale of two friends but to bill it as a never-before-told story is quite an overreach. It's a typical tale of trials and tribulations of a performing duo that you could probably predict from the description above. Interesting to set this years past the peak of their career, but this film fails to really demonstrate why these two were international stars of their time. Fav scene: the typical climatic fight between the best friends.
