No redeeming qualities whatsoever. A contrived and flat-out ridiculously bad pseudo-comic book storyline and special effects that look so unfinished that I'm convinced the movie ran 20% over budget. Honestly, this should never have been released in any format.

I lasted about 20 minutes and it's the only time I can remember walking out on a film in the cinema. There's a bunch of other stuff that I've given up on partway through but this one counts because I embarrassingly paid money to see it.

I don't know how this could have gone so wrong from a director such as Kurt Wimmer, who did a great job of organising the action. However incomprehensible cuts made to the film by the studios might quicken the pace, but destroy any plausiblity of the plotline. The artistic style could work, but makes the whole thing look like a video game instead. Guards never shoot when they have the opportunity, Violet is way too powerful and dialogue is poor. Action scenes: stupendous, but fun to watch.

If you love movies where the bad guys repeatedly surround the heroine, and are pummeled to death in sequence because of their apparent inability to work as any kind of team, then this movie is for you.

Terrible movie for me for two main reasons. One, the main hero never bleeds. What point is watching a movie when the main hero is untouchable? Two, it has a scene where someone is resurrected by someone crying on them. Really?

Somehow this movie was both terrible and intresting, worthless and memorable. Cool, but dreadful. While I can't say I liked it, or felt it was worth spending any money at all on. It had some intresting ideas, so I don't regret seeing it either.

It's a beautiful movie, that embraced its B-movie style while also not seeming to realize it's a B-movie. Sure there's no depth, but it's really enjoyable anyways.

I usually enjoy this type of trashy resident evil/underworld-like film with an early 2000's blue-filtered vibe, but this was just an absolute bore with pretty much no redeeming qualities. I won't even talk about the script or directing because that's redundant at this point.

Yet another sci-fi movie with a female protagonist that gives it good eye-candy value. The cinematography is quite creative and the visuals are quite good. Special effects are nice to watch, but the eye candy is better. The fight scenes are nicely choreographed. The storyline is not as solid as I would like, but forgivable anyway.

Ultraviolet's action scenes are definitely what carry it. The visual style surrounding these scenes are interesting themselves, and make a great backdrop for some of the exciting fights that occur throughout the film. It's weak in its plot and characters, but doesn't give you time to think about them due to its quick pacing. Ultraviolet is a fun little film. It acts like a B-movie, but takes itself a slight bit too seriously at times to keep that tone up. Not great, but entertaining nonetheless.

Clunky mash-up of all the popular action tropes circa the mid-aughts (plague/zombies, video game graphics, THE MATRIX) is a largely incoherent mess – as always Jovovich is a more than capable and competent action heroine, but it would be nice to see her in an action movie more in keeping with her style and talent; the remainder of the cast largely struggle with the leaden and portentous dialogue (which ironically explains very little!), even Fichtner is hung out to dry in this one.

"Let's get it on!" Really? Ultraviolet gets points for having occasionally good action and the occasional good-looking shot, but mainly because it has Milla Jovovich being unreasonably pretty. Would have been a fun movie if they'd cut out the plot, dialogue, child actor and Milla's clothes. Just kidding; her clothes are awesome. Good thing they managed to cram like 30 different outfits for her in there.

What Jovovich did to deserve this particular movie isn't exactly clear. The same goes for the poor audience. This time we also have implausible and over-the-top action sequences, but the movie is so overloaded with them that they become tiresome. Wimmer obviously have never heard the expression "less is more".

I liked the pinball guys at the beginning, the rest is almost unwatchable: the soft focus and color regrading (done to better match the live action to the low grade CG?) is especially hard on the eyes. Probably will re-watch because 'How Did This Get Made' did a show on it. Roughly in the same group of sci-fi nonsense as that superior (but still not very good) Vin Diesel movie from around the same time.

Ultraviolet was a film made to be like a comic. Each scene self contained with a nice visual effect, snappy line of dialogue or face-stomping action.... in theory. In practice we have a disjointed mess where the characters motivation are either changing every 10 minutes from some seemingly inconsequential event to suit the scene, or it's given to us just AFTER whatever it is they did to explain why they just did it.
Rated 05 Aug 2012

Ultraviolet is the ultimate example of style over substance. At every juncture, the goal is to create a futuristic music video piece more than it is to convey an interesting story. That said, some of the visuals are pretty damn cool! The pacing generally tries to stay fast enough to help the viewer forget about the plot holes, and even though the overall movie is predictable, you still find yourself smiling in spite of yourself and enjoying some of the way over-the-top fight scenes.
