The movie was better then I thought it would be. A bunch of good performances from actors I don't know. After a slow start with those stupid interviews the movie picks up. It became easy to hate Hirshch's character, and freakin' Foster was nutso. And how about the rest of Hirsch's crew. The fact that they got pulled into this mess just showed how much control Hirsch had on his friends, especially Foster, and to a lesser extent JT (who can act). I just didn't want it to end that way.

Alpha Dog is a solid drama filled with tension, deep characters and an interesting story. Managing to fill up a film with unlikable characters and still allowing it to keep you enthralled is difficult, but it works here. It does end up playing for too long though, and some of the characters were just too unlikable for me to handle, but on the whole, it's an entertaining experience that is definitely worth a watch. Just don't search this case online first, because you'll ruin the ending.

I was surprised how good Alpha Dog is. The cast is less than stellar and the director, in my experience, is pretty mediocre, but the movie pulls together for a strong and interesting story that flows at a steady pace. I'm impressed.

I thought this movie was gonna be crap but it actually wasnt bad, in fact it was quite good. Easily the most memorable parts of this movie are Timberlakes, and Foster's performances. It really is a sad film, and you feel for some of the characters, but it was trying to be too much of a high school "gangsta" flick that it didn't really make much of it. Worth a watch, but don't expect much.

The movie isn't stupid so much as it's (mostly) full of stupid characters. It still works though, because dumb-as-bricks though they may be, sadly, they feel all too real. Timberlake proves surprisingly capable as an actor, and Yelchin's performance drives the film's emotional punch. A very well-acted movie all around, from a pretty impressive cast. Though the plot is depressingly straight-forward, Cassavetes has crafted a very engaging film with a strong emotional pay-off. Worth the watch.

this isn't as good as i think it is, but it so surpassed my expectations, i had to give it a good rating. And believe it or not, JT can act, and creates a likeable character here. all personal responses to films are subjective and personal, and this one, being about over-priviledged kids exactly my age, growing up in the early-90's and throwing away the incredible opportunities they were born into, struck a chord with me.

Based on the true story of Jesse James Hollywood ALPHA DOG comes with the look and feel of a semi-documentary. Adolescents who think they are really tough and cool because they deal with drugs, behave like gangstas and swear more and better than others, when they are in fact losers and cowards. You don't want to be around people like that - and that's the film's problem.

Saw this as a last minute switch and it surprised me a few times. It ended up being a solid movie. Justin Timberlake broke my heart near the end, proving he can act (even if he does just act like a thug throughout most of it.) I ended up caring deepy for these people, even though normally I wouldn't. Could have gone wrong but it didn't.

Justin Timberlake gives a surprisingly nuanced performance in this flick about a bunch of lazy, juvenile delinquents and a kidnapping plot gone terribly wrong. Although the editing is haphazard and Emile Hirsch is slightly miscast (should have switched him and Hatosy's parts), but Cassavetes is able to pull it together enough to make a very effective climactic scene. Not the best film of the year, but certainly enough to prove Timberlake to be more than just another pop star.

Surprisingly enjoyable and well done, especially when viewed as a character study. Everyone strives to be number one in Johnny's eyes, who also happens to be the alpha dog. That's why Keith and Frankie are so weak at the end, they still have to do Johnny's bidding. That's also why bitch guy (forget his name) is so willingly to do whatever Johnny wants, because he would literally suck his dick, a fact brought up earlier in the movie. Sad ending and one of those movies you wish you could change.

Yelchin’s performance and character carried the film, as the rest of the cast was far too unlikable to care about (aside from maybe Frankie). It’s well paced and builds tension well while giving a few humorous moments here and there. I hated the conclusion, but considering this was a true story I can’t really fault the film for it.

Although based on real life events it echoes 'Bully' and 'Mean Creek', both stronger tales of 'buddy-slaying'. The main problem is a lack of focus, adding many scenes that seem to lead nowhere, because the movie never seems to make up its mind about who's story it wants to tell. Also the 'interview'-style didn't sit right with me, and the whole 'witness' bit also felt redundant. That said it's an entertaining movie with great performances by especially Timberlake and Foster.

Takes an age to get going. By the time we get to the meat of the story, I was already starting to lose interest. Thankfully, once we were given some clues about where it was going (after nearly 40 minutes!), it started to pick up a bit. Justin Timberlake puts in a great performance, although it probably helped that his character was easily the most likeable. I wasn't keen on the editing, though - all those split screens and faux-interviews were kinda annoying.

Average film saved by the great work made by an awesome young cast, with some of the best actors of his generation. There's huge talent and undeniable charisma under the pretty faces of Yelchin, Hirsch and Foster, but the surprise of the movie is Justin Timberlake, who seems to steal the show in some scenes.

It is so young targeted that it misses a dark atmosphere but overall it is a very solid film. The last one I voted with an eighty (not seventy-five) a couple of days ago was "Changeling" (2008). This one is a little less solid than the aforementioned.

A very confused movie. The rap soundtrack and flashy editing would have me believe the movie wants us to admire the lifestyles of these assholes. But at the same time the constant name/location tags (eg "witness #12") and ridiculous mock interviews make it out to be a realistic reenactment of an actual tragic event. And what happened to Ben Foster? He was the best thing about the movie and disappeared halfway through. And what the hell was with Sharon Stone in the awful splotchy fat suit?

A confused directing and editing job means this 'inspired' by a true story doesn't quite head in the direction you expect and never really gets going. Yelchin and - yes, Justin Timberlake - provide the acting chops here, helping carry the plot to its natural conclusion before it's oddly dragged out an extra 15 minutes beyond viewers' interest. The childish script ("yo cocksucking bitch faggot pussy motherfucker"), as accurate as it may be, becomes tiresomely gratuitous very quickly.

For pretty much the whole film, Alpha Dogs keeps the mood surprisingly high, but the uneasy feeling is always lurking and it does rear its ugly head late in the film. Timberlake proves to be the best actor in this film, capturing Frankie as likeable and honest. Anton Yelchin is awesome as well, capturing Zach's innocence and youth. The storyline progresses rather slowly. keeping you into the story and fully aware of the possibilities that are around the corner. Solid all around film.

Suburbia gets all gangsta. Cool but not really well worked out. Too much attention for the partying, sex and drugs than for the story they actually were trying or should have been telling. (That is: What went wrong with these kids to make them act like that?) ... After a while it kind of gets repetitive.

Better than I expected. The story is strong enough, the characters are pretty obnoxious though that is mostly intentional. There's nothing really superb, though, and the meta aspects (e.g. actors, in character, giving "post crime" interviews) seem pretty forced.

Had Cassavetes shown a little more testicular fortitude with this story, and delivered a more edgy and original film like Rian Johnson did with Brick a year ago, Alpha Dog may have turned out to be a solid film, especially considering its solid cast.
