My high rating is not as much for the movie as a whole. There is nothing in this movie other than the acting I haven't seen done better. But believe me the acting is so good that I would give more than 90 already because of Meryl Streep's performance and than I did not even mention Julia Roberts who is my favourite in this one, pure genius.

August: Osage County or the NBA Dunk Contest of Acting. I'd rather not criticize Meryl Streep for doing a 360 windmill when she could've just laid it in. Let Meryl do what Meryl do. If only Nic Cage was in this as well.. http://i.imgur.com/foCWdCd.gif

I've rarely, if ever, seen a writer do as much violence to his own work in adaptation as Letts here. Maybe 20% of American films 3+ hours need to be, but 90% of 3+ hour plays do. Would that he had Kushner's constitution...but instead we get Wells' placid Prime-Time Importance. Which is ironic, not incongruous, the difference between which is elucidated in one of several great scenes cut. The first three notes of Santaolalla's score make clear the desperately respectable garbage you're in for.

August: Osage County is a film that tires you out. There are so many characters to keep track of, a great deal of reveals and twists scattered later in the film, and so much emotional tension that you will likely want to take a nap after you watch it. That speaks highly to how effective the movie is. It might not make you like many of its characters, but it will keep you interested in them until they leave you.

It's tricky to adapt the stage into film, especially for material as verbose and dramatic as this, and sadly this one suffers a bit in the translation. Everyone is given their big acting moments, but for me the filmmaking is too conventional to make this feel like anything else but a string of somewhat contrived dramatic moments. MVPs are Roberts, who shows a harder edge than she often does, and of course Streep, although I'd really like her to start doing smarter, more challenging films.

I had high expectations for this movie and Im totally satisfied. This is the best ensemble of the year. Julia Roberts was fantastic, I can't believe it she impressed me more than any of her performances before. It was a very very good experience I wish I'd seen the theater production though.

Fairly entertaining, and Streep and Roberts obviously has a ball. But while the plot is pretty simple (dead dad, family meeting), the outragesness of the story threads eventually just implodes on themselves, making the experience almost surreal. Based on a play - like you wouldnt believe.

I thought it was pretty good. These dysfunctional family dramas have been done a bunch of times, so in a lot of ways, it was nothing new. It was hard to forget that it was originally a play. However, I still found the basic plot and the characters compelling enough. The main reason to see the film is the cast. And they were all great. It was no surprise that Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts were the highlights. It's worth a watch, but I don't think I'll be remembering it very well in a few years.

Simmering family drama is a cauldron of hits and misses, with Wells' rather stodgy, bland direction, and a tendancy towards overlength the detriments, though some judicious pruning/combining of the enormous cast of characters would have also helped. In the plus column are the performances in general; Roberts' towering, career-best performance of resentment and bitterness is extraordinary, and Streep is a lot of fun (if perhaps too much at times) as the loony matriarch.

As is obvious from the title it's got a ton of good actors in it but what can be done in plays didn't transfer well to the screen. There may be families that can reach this level of dysfunction but it just kept escalating and escalating. Not a waste of time, but the Oscar bait didn't pay off.

This film explores serious topics like drug addiction, mental illness, pedophilia and incest but, is too long to tell these issues, in my opinion. Besides, Meryl Streep's performance is far too garish, even for a drama. This movie should be with everything more calm and simple.

It feels too long, and Streep's performance, while admirable, feels out of place and unnecessary. There must've been some other way to play this impossible character, and if anyone could have found it, it would be Streep. How weird to acknowledge a good performance by the most celebrated actress of her time and wish someone else had played the part. Worth a look, but keep your expectations in check and stick it out if at first you dislike it. You'll almost surely find something to like.

I didn't expect a lot from this movie - many film adaptations of great plays end up really failing to capture what made the play work so well. They feel like adaptations. To me this one feels like a movie with a fantastic script and a solid ensemble cast. The family members especially work really well together and feel naturally like a family, some of the in-laws can feel a bit out of place and I have to admit I wish they had stuck with exclusively American actors.

August: Osage County is a smartly written and darkly comedic drama that makes itself home to solid performances from the ensemble cast. There aren't enough characters in the character limit to talk about how amazing everyone is in this film. A few slow moments and an ending that could've been perfect knock this down from Amazing to Great-- still, highly recommended.

A dull movie about nasty people directed without skill or imagination, but with lots of bravura acting. The showiest are Lewis as the loony sister, and Streep as the Wicked Witch of Oklahoma, but better are Cooper and Martindale, revealing nuanced characters beneath their comic grotesques. Best of all is Roberts, who knows this is a film not the stage, and lets the camera love her, courageously revealing--without obvious make-up--the severe beauty of her forty-six year old face.

It has a lot of very good elements, but big flaws at the same time. Good: The acting is formidable, and the fact that Cumberbatch comes in 5th, says a lot. Flaw: The big family drama that is so essential for this movie to be interesting, loses it's grip with too many minor plot stories. This could have been absolutely stunning but ends up being plain with only a few scenes to remember, the rest is just a lot of screaming and yelling. - Good.

I'm a sucker for big family dysfunction ensemble pieces, so August: Osage County is pretty much tailor made for me. Streep and Roberts are the standouts, but everyone is exceptional. I think it's laughable that the biggest criticism of this film comes down to "actors are acting? Unacceptable!" My goodness, sometimes it's okay to indulge in actors shouting at each other, especially when their words flow this well from this powerful material.

Excellent. Meryl Streep is sensational, and she seems to have inspired Julia Roberts to actually--*gasp!*--act in their scenes together. The whole cast, in fact, is good, and Margo Martindale is outstanding. People complain this movie is depressing. As Dorothy Parker wrote, "Doubtless you have heard that this [...] is not pleasant. Neither, for that matter, is the Atlantic Ocean."

I remember passing this by when it came out and not being even remotely interested in checking it out until I found out it was written by Tracy Letts and adapted from one of his plays. Yeah, it’s got a great cast, but if you took them all off the poster and replaced them with the words “written by Tracy Letts”, I would have watched this years ago. Side note: can people stop asking Benedict Cumberbatch to do Southern accents? How have we not learned this lesson yet?

Although the actual story meanders a little, the screenplay, direction and acting in AOC more than make up for that!. I found this to be a really funny, poignant and sad film and one that was almost impossible to take your eyes away from ... The little nuanced looks and actions in this movie are simply brilliant to watch. So much credit needs to go to Nicholson, Martindale, Breslin and Cooper who despite their smaller roles created the solid believability that was crucial to the films success.

August: Osage County has been called a comedy by some. But while it may contain some humorous moments, this is actually pure Old Testament tragedy. The characters who seek to mete out justice on their own terms are handed justice on those same terms. Those who show no mercy are shown none. Even Violet's mouth cancer seems a poetic judgment for her sins, given that her mouth is the source of so many of her and her family's problems. (plluggedin.com)

A strongly acted movie that has an incredible realistic feeling screenplay. Julia Roberts and Meryl Streep steal the spotlight though and deliver perfect performances. Sadly this movie is hurt by feeling like a shortened version of the play it's adapted from. With subplots brought up and then never touched for long periods of time. Scenes tend to drag on in a central location and never feel like they will end, while fine in a play, it doesn't work in a movie.

Somewhat awkward adaptation of a largely comic melodrama into a sometimes unduly turgid acting showcase, recentred on standoff between mother and daughter. The cast certainly aren't light on talent and make the most of their line readings, but as I usually find with Tracy Letts, you don't really want to get camera-close to his broadly drawn angry hillbillies. Martindale gives my favourite performance: focused yet funny and knowing, without competing for attention.

It's very obvious that August: Osage County is based on a play. You can almost imagine the gasps from the back rows when the story of the Westons unfold. Roberts and Streep get to go head to head and it's a joy to behold. I believe Streep just cornered the 2014 Oscar for Leading Actress. Great acting from Cooper, Martindale and Cumberbatch. I liked it. Raw. Tragic. Insane. Made me feel a lot better about the conversation we have at my family reunions.

If 2 hours of well acted human misery is your cup of tea, you've struck gold. Even more misery here than "Les Miserables"! And just when you think things couldn't get more miserable, they get more miserable! Angry, bitter hurtful women and ineffective, brow beaten men verbally duke it out. I don't know how the cast didn't turn into raging alcoholics after portraying these characters. Suicide, drug and alcohol abuse, cancer, incest... etc... etc... it makes "Macbeth" look like light comedy.

Everyone is set up tall only to have their legs cut out from under them at the end. Living in this family is like eating a shit sandwich...when you're done forcing it down and you're glad it's over with, you've got another one to go. There were also some very humorous moments to ease a lot of the tension, namely Julia Roberts telling Meryl Streep, "eat the fish, you fucker!" Fine acting all around.

Tracy Letts adapts his own excellent play about a dysfunctional Oklahoma family, and a fine cast has been assembled to play them, although the adaptation puts the focus more fully on matriarch Violet (Meryl Streep) and eldest daughter Barbara (Julia Roberts), giving some of the secondary characters short shrift. It retains most of its blackly comic power, and the cast is superb (Chris Cooper's work here has been highly underrated); the weak final third, fortunately, doesn't dampen it too much.

When it works, it really works; the central dinner scenes are deliciously raw, and the ensemble really work together well. (Abigail Breslin and Chris Cooper in particular warrant considerable praise.) Alas, certain sequences cave in to Streep's histronics too thoroughly and become a tad unconcincing, preventing this darkly comic, devilishly compelling theatrical Southern melodrama escalating to cinema's upper tiers.
