Great story about a regular man affecting change by doing right. I'm kind of shocked that with such a regular down to Earth character, someone completely common, an everyman even, that they went with such an average name, Joe...Wait. Nope. Now I'm getting it. Now I'm getting it.

Fantastic acting all around. Great, depressing and bleak story that never gives you a clue as to what the point is or where it's going but still wraps up nicely and in a satisfying manner. DGG is like a modern day Vincente Minnelli or something. Dude has range. Also, side bar is Tye Sheridan the greatest child actor of all time? Realize the competition is pretty horrendous but damn he has been good.

(2nd viewing) A carefully observed film that is both harsh and beautiful, sometimes simultaneously. Perhaps the film's greatest quality is how it's incredibly conscious of its rugged, poverty-mired Mississippi setting and its characters' unyielding struggle for a better life. Presumably playing himself, Poulter delivers a wonderfully sincere, hauntingly authentic performance and Cage is a gripping presence, as is his bushy, grizzled beard. Mhmmmmm...

Known for casting locals in his movies, David Gordon Green employs the services of Nic Cage--a backwoods Texan vampire who's sold his soul to the devil so he can find the true national treasure: a 15-year old boy looking to buy a truck. The true message here is that diseased trees need to be cut down to allow the younger trees to grow up healthy. Wait... That is the true message. HOLY SHIT, I finally got it! Time to buy a chainsaw and some tree poison!

Quite similar to Jeff Nichols' "Mud", Joe is another coming-of-age tale where the kid takes a seedy but well-meaning ex-con as a male role model, and both films feature some well-written scenes but ruin it - "Mud" turns saccharine and "Joe" just goes thoroughly over-the-top. The whole ending here is plainly excessive, but really, the entire movie is peppered with contrived scenes of random hillbilly barbarity, that contribute nothing to the plot aside from unlikelihood.

Dark and dreary, definitely shares some kinship to Mud, and much of the violence feels out of place that it becomes almost laughable. Still, there it's definitely well made and well acted for the most part. You could do worse if you are looking to feel dirty and uncomfortable.

fathers and sons, inexorable cycles of violence, codes of masculinity, dog metaphors (oh man, the dog metaphors), clutter-strewn "poverty porn" milieu, non-professional supporting cast complete with unparsable regional accents for maximum authenticity, a boy's coming-of-age via the redemption of a father figure... yeah, pretty sure i've seen this shitty movie before. i'd watch cage in anything though, and there are lots of fun parallels between actor and character here.

It hits a lot of familiar beats - and especially in the wake of Mud, which is like a more polished version of this film (take that as you will) - but it's nice to have David Gordon Green back doing his thing instead of stoner comedies, and perhaps more importantly, Nic Cage back as a serious actor. Tye Sheridan is also making a name for himself very quickly.

The characters feel genuine, real and believable. The story is about a man who is not always on the right side of the law, but nevertheless a good man and a good human being. He helps those he can, and stands up for himself and his friends. He is very rough around the edges, but despite his many flaws, it's easy to respect and sometimes even admire the man. An interesting plot and well worth watching.

A plaintive, atmospheric character study that cuts deeply and genuinely into the lives of these broken and challenged Southern rural men. Nicolas Cage and Tye Sheridan both deliver dark and raw performances.

David Gordon Green, the director of many faces. Wonderfully shot and acted with its collection of locals in addition to great performances by Cage and Sheridan. Sheridan is shaping up to be a force, for sure.

Joe is a very impressive film -- the type of project that both David Gordon Green and Nicolas Cage should consistently produce. Its rural setting -- wonderfully captured by its cinematographer -- use of local or non-actors, and realistic portrayal of its characters gives it a powerful authenticity. Its characters are well-developed and performed well by the actors, and while it's slow moving, it's never dull. For the most part, this is a great film that you should see.

Viewed July 8, 2014. Another solid entry in the David Gordon Green filmography, with strong Southern atmosphere bolstered by a cast filled with local actors. The comparisons to Mud are obvious and I liked this one about as much I liked that one - which is to say, I get why others love it, but my connection to it isn't particularly notable.

Cage is no average Joe in this excellent drama. I thought this movie was really nice. I was especially floored when I found out this film was directed by David Gordon Green who has done Pineapple Express, Your Highness and The Sitter. Normally a low-brow director, he filmed this gorgeous movie about an unlikely man to be the mentor to a child who knows nothing but abuse at home...

Well, the movie starts slow, but eventually gaines momentum. This doesn't mean that Joe is a great movie. The story is odd and really far from my own bedside, but Sheridan is convincing and low and behold so is Cage. 51/100.

DGG once again returns to southern gothic territory. Cage plays Joe, a working class man with a troubled past who becomes a surrogate father to Sheridan, a young victim of domestic violence. When Joe clashes with his abusive father--played effectively by Poulter--violence erupts. Cage does his best work in years, and DGG works overtime to create an authentic lived-in quality to the characters' impoverished surroundings, but like Manglehorn his formal tricks can't disguise the humdrum screenplay.

This does MUD better than MUD, even though it's a little schematic in structure, the climax seems preordained (and kinda labored), and Sheridan's teenager seems a bit more jolly than he maybe oughta. Cage hasn't been this impressive in years, though, and where the film really excels is in its depiction of this particular, unique, super-rural working class milieu. This will likely be one of the most lived-in films you'll see all year.

One could argue that this is a hit-or-miss kind of film. It's a haunting and intense story with no filter what so ever. Cage is back to form and Sheridan kept his from "Mud". It's very compelling. The performances from the whole cast make this movie to what it is. Gordon Green tends to use local actors, heck, the most haunting performance of G.Daawg was by the late homeless man Gary Poulter. This is worth a watch. *Good

With its crude landscapes and characters who just drink, shoot and curse, Joe represents another solid take on white trash by an indie filmmaker. Unlike Jeff Nichols' wonderful Shotgun Stories and Mud, this one only confirms Gordon Green interest in providing atmosphere -- slowmos, experimental score, strange decisions by the characters, sequences that don't add much but look stunning, like drunk Joe looking for a blowjob -- before plot. Not a masterpiece, but a fine, decent thriller.

White trash Nic Cage is definitely the best Nic Cage. It's compelling watching Cage as an angry alcoholic ex-con doing manual labor while teaching this young kid how to be a man. Depressed backwater hick town USA is always fascinating. This also takes the risky approach of using non-actors mixed in with actors which gave the film a very realistic edge. Gary Poutler as the violent homeless man is very convincing then again he wasn't really acting as much as channeling parts of his sad life.

I'm thrilled that Green and especially Cage are still interested in making serious films, and this works pretty well as a return to form for both if not a masterpiece. It's all really familiar stuff by now, which is probably its biggest flaw, as it takes a lot from Green's earlier work and films like "Winter's Bone" or "Beasts of the Southern Wild" in its depiction of crime and redemption in rural America, but there are a lot of solid performances and it's an interesting world to spend time in.

Joe sees Gordon Green going back to his darker roots (ala Snow Angels), and it's a very welcome return. Cage and Sheridan are both excellent, and the portions of the film that focus on Joe's crew are awesome (seriously, just great down to Earth stuff). There are points where you feel the length of the movie, but beautiful cinematography and the great performance don't make it that much of an issue. It's a depressing, bleak SOB of a movie, but this is what David Gordon Green SHOULD be doing.

Two more movies like this one and I'm willing to forgive David Gordon Green for atrocities he committed during three-year period starting with Pineapple Express in 2008. Joe is captivating southern drama, so dark that at a times you literally can't see what the hell is going on screen. But you can be sure that people are suffering, Cage most of all. His face is a face of infinite pain, and yet a hint of a smile never leaves it (because he's fucking badass, obviously).

In one of Nicolas Cage's strongest dramatic performances, he plays a weary ex-con in a poor Southern town, struggling to hold his own worst tendencies in check while looking out for a young boy who might yet have a chance at a better life. David Gordon Green is an expert at portraying the harsh realities of life in these communities, and despite the bleak nature of the story always finds room for moments of beauty and hope.

Well, if nothing else this feels more or less like a 'real' David Gordon Green film for a change (whatever that even means at this point), or at the very least like it was run through an adequate David Gordon Green-approximating algorithm. Actually, it's probably not much of a step down from Undertow or Snow Angels (neither of which i'm in any real hurry to revisit anytime soon). As if making up for lost time, it's easily the most lurid, fully Southern Gothic thing he's ever done at least.

I responded to its wildness of Joe - there are some unfortunate genre elements, but generally it has this feel of being a living and breathing thing, an independent film like they used to make, and also one Gordon Green hasn't made since Undertow, which I loved just as much. I noticed some similarities to Cormac McCarthy's work - Suttree perharps - with rancid, uncouth men making up their own law, culminating in this one murder that's pretty hard to take, but also inevitable with this material.

Lots to like about this. Cage and Sheridan are both good, but my real favorites are the scenes with the tree workers, and especially their teaching Gary. Such a great portrait of mentorship, as Gary reaches out for men to show him how to be a man. I also appreciate the understated way Green plays the dramatic action.
