Ironically, this movie about a doctor who celebrates life will make you want to kill yourself.

I'm not sure that I could convey to you in words my loathing for this film. The only time I laughed is when the music got all dark and you suddenly realize that Patch's girlfriend is dead. That's pretty sick, but I saw this in the theater, while on a date, that did not go well, mostly because of the aforementioned laughing.

Shamefully bad melodrama that expects us to believe that kids would actually laugh at Robin Williams in a clown nose instead of recoiling in terror.

So fucking sappy, so syrupy sweet, so offensively, absurdly shmaltzy that even as a kid I was absolutely shocked by what I was seeing. It gave me diabetes, and now I have to get a shot every day. I mean, just read the plot summary. Jesus christ.

First and foremost: there is a doctor in this film who runs a hospital for sick and dying children. This doctor is such an over-the-top, not-even-in-the-movies a--hole that he reprimands Patch Adams for entertaining the children and making them laugh! I'm not making this up. Also: all of the jokes fall flat.

From Mike Nelsons review of Patch Adams in his Movie Megacheese book. "I think we can say with some certainty that anyone who's ever seen a balloon animal act is thinking, somewhere in the back of his mind, how nice it would be to die."

Williams is brilliant as the titular character: Goofy and sweet (the first red nose scene with the kids is heart-melting), gleefully subversive ("At your cervix!"; the grad mooning), and endearingly idealistic (see his late-night brainstorm with Carin). The powerful combination of humour and sentimentality throughout is enough to make the heart burst-or at least let the film's cliched set-ups and lazily brisk pacing (the hints of dark tragedy begged for more time) slide, for the most part.

Well intentioned effort has its moments, and this humanistic fight against a bureaucracy is as worthy a subject as any for a movie, but it quickly becomes clear that the director of ACE VENTURA has no business attempting this sort of “Oscar bait” movie. Dramatic elements are too heavy-handed, with one blind-siding incident so out of left field, it conjures a derisory laugh; Williams does his best, but struggles when the character switches to weepy and mopey in the film's protracted second half.

Patch Adams is a film I completely misjudged. It presents itself as a light hearted film but it's far from it. As much as I love Robin Williams, he feels miscast here and his humour doesn't translate well on screen. And it comes across uncomfortable and incredibly misplaced. Tonally it's all over the place and ultimately Patch Adams struggles to establish an identity. I can't recall many other films that are as manipulative as this. And it leaves an incredibly nasty and saccharine taste.
