Pretty detestable in places. Rogen stands out here. It's sad that Williams' character is suffering from severe depression as their marriage breaks down but to see her wooed by a manipulative ass clown like Mr. Rickshaw is infuriating and maybe not as unbelievable as I'd like. The problem is there doesn't feel like any connection exists between them and yet he's a threat. The story of the relationship falling apart (ala Blue Valentine) is the most affecting part...but the cause is empty.

Loathed it. It's the mirror opposite of Polley's great feature debut as a director, 'Away From Her', a mature and involving film. This time around we're in 'Away We Go' territory. Quirky, admittedly, is often disgusting to me - and, sure enough, I found this "oh so whimsical" (largely improvised even?) piece of shit awfully annoying.

Feels overly constructed. A big clunky shadow of the sweet little story of making choices in life and love, that it could have been. Only Michelle Williams prevents me from completely hating this.

An Indie Themepark was created, in which a beautiful, dirt poor couple lives in a messy, but immaculately charming villa (est. $3 million) - he lives off desperately trying to write a cookbook about broiling chicken and she.. i forgot. Neighbour is hot, problems ensue. A movie follows. The victim of all this? Me.

A curious film, for all the parts that work it largely fails to establish a consistent tone or reconcile its third act with what preceded it. Despite this, it remains a fairly enigmatic viewing experience.

With its utopian tableau of attractive, work-shy youths living their sun-soaked, organic, interior-decorated lives, Polley's film treads dangerously close to letting its raging hipsterishness overshadow any plot or message. Thankfully, this relationship rollercoaster tale does have some truly powerful poignant moments - which Williams does justice to - plus a host of brilliant laugh-out-loud dialogue exchanges which make you want to sign up for the exact same bipolar hipster lifestyle yourself.

A disappointment after Polley's wonderfully successful Away From Her. This one relies too much on chance occurrences and unrealistic scenarios (how does Rickshaw-guy afford either of his homes in the movie?). Further the film begins with Williams' character in a completely unsympathetic light, and while her complexity grows over the film, it never makes it back to a place where her conflict seemed believable. Also, the script was overwritten at times (airports=fear of connections).

Surprisingly grim and ultimately nihilistic view of a modern relationship works mainly thanks to pitch-perfect performances from its cast, and an exemplary effort from Williams playing an at times frustrating and doggedly unlikable character. Polley's direction is interesting, but often feels like watered-down Wes Anderson; her screenplay too often has a tendency to ramble and become self conscious, despite having many worthy things to say about romantic confusion. A mixed bag, but worthwhile.

Rogen and Williams are a great fit for their respective roles and their chemistry together is exactly what the film needs. It's at its best when it lingers on the little moments in that relationship, or on Williams' emotional struggles. It falters every time the dramatic tension is pushed, in part because Kirby is no match for Williams, but also because Polley gets too showy in her direction and unbalances the tone and flow of the film. The result is a worthwhile, but flawed character study.

This film's glorious, gorgeous burst of red, yellow and orange betrays the fact that it's actually a really sad movie about really sad people. Seth Rogen and Michelle Williams are fantastic.

Take This Waltz constantly plays with Hollywood cliches, only to subvert them the very next moment. It's so refreshing to see a nuanced portrayal of a troubled, hopeful woman who wants the best for herself and the people around her, but who is as lost as any human being. Do you embrace your inner child, or shed it? Do you go for comfort or shiny newness? Do you enjoy the ride or worry about what happens when it's over?

I had trouble rating this film. On one hand, I really liked it, it has great music and the characters seemed really great. On the other, I really disliked this film. A lot of people in it made a lot of really stupid mistakes. It also shows the complexities of marriage and this movie really exemplifies my new favorite phrase for saving any marriage "the grass is greener where you water it." which is something that none of the characters tried to do to save their relationships. A sad tale for sure

One of those movies that makes human relationships seem really horrible and not worth the effort; if this is what it's like I'd rather be alone. Not a bad movie, but it relies heavily on the viewer resonating with very emotional and impulsive people, and that never really happened for me. Some really beautiful night shots, but also some unpleasantly over-saturated colours that make it look like a TV movie. And Luke Kirby is the most boringly anonymous Canadian nobody Polley could have cast.

If it weren't for Michelle Williams being wickedly hot, I'd have no reason to feel anything for her fickle, cheating character. As it stands, all I feel for her is a bulge in my pants. I guess there's some merit in that.

Gee, can the quirky indie girl/part-time journalist with emotional range (if not depth) decide between the sensible husband/writer of cook books (Rogen) and the poet guy who pulls a rickshaw for tourists (Luke Kirby)? And will the fact that Rickshaw Boy lives in the equivalent of a loft apartment perched atop an old lighthouse affect her decision? You bet it will. (There's one neat scene amid the dodge 'em cars when the colored lights turn off, but that's not nearly enough to make a film)

A good movie that is carried by an amazing performance from Michelle Williams. Seth Rogen, Luke Kirby and Sarah Silverman are strong in supporting roles. Sarah Polley continues to impress as a filmmaker. With this film and "Away From Her" she is proving to be a strong writer who makes interesting choices as a director and gets strong performances from her cast.

Irritatingly and pointlessly quirky. This is a movie that just reeks of trying far too hard. "Take This Waltz" is horribly contrived and pretentious; with idioic characters, a stilted, unfathomably idiotic up its own arse screenplay and ever so precious and unnaturally slight performances... urghh. This movie can fuck right off.

A rom-com that runs into a lot of genre tropes, but lightly hops over them instead to keep from tripping. It works, and it's very beautifully shot.

Terrible writing, the dialogue in particular, like a Francine Pascal pre-teen novel. However, I've given this an admittedly biased rank solely due to the fact that I'm a Torontonian.

Despite the luminous photography, and achingly hip interiors and clothes giving it a Hollywood sheen, this is an interesting examination of fidelity and the difficulty we have in committing to one path in love. Observant, often very funny, sometimes frustratingly whimsical and ultimately devastating.

God damnit. A potentialy great film that falls apart around the beginning of the third act, one completely absurd and entirely out of character sex scene in particular. Blue Valentine did most of this a lot better, but Take This Waltz does offer something new. A shame not all of it is worthwhile.

This is a well made, interesting drama. Michelle Williams and Seth Rogen are both really good in this film. Sarah Silverman is also very good in a dramatic role. The story focuses on relationships and cheating. The script is realistic and excellent.

Despite the glossy sheen, and the oh so whimsical quirkiness that somehow takes this one step out of reality, it's actually a more depressing and devastating film than Blue Valentine. Poor Seth Rogen, he doesn't need to take this shit....

Interesting performances by Michelle Williams and Luke Kirby, alongside excellent camera work, and flashes of situational brilliance make Take This Waltz worth a look. An overlong and repetitive nature lessens the impact of Margo's decisions, but the impact is still present. Nothing overly special, but certainly a decent little drama.

What a brave piece of writing. Williams carries this movie and with her huge amount of talent and honesty Take This Waltz isn't just another tragic rom-com. Even if it looks and feels like is at times. (Damn you genre-conversations) But I can't find another movie that takes all of his represented feelings so serious. It would be much easier to tell a story about loyalty and right choices, but Polley isn't interested in the fast applause and cheap solutions.

Every year has to have a drama where Michelle Williams burns through the screen. Don't blame me, it's the law. But for all the great performances, "Take This Waltz" is no "Blue Valentine". Sarah Polley makes a movie where the initial quirkiness gradually turns out to just be covering up fears gone unspoken, and it's certainly a lot more adult (not porny) than it first seems, but while I love that it doesn't take easy ways out, does that have to mean going nowhere except by contrived coincidence?

When Seth Rogen and Sarah Silverman are the least irritating characters in your film you have a problem. For all its criticisms, the film does paint infidelity uniquely. It goes where the viewer doesn't want it to, which can be applauded, to a certain extent.
