All pistons were firing when they put this cast together but it was truly inspired to have Peter Sarsgaard play John Malkovich's son.

Utterly captivating swashbuckler plays even better now that recent years have been starved of this sort of rousing, old-fashioned adventure; lightweight and thin on plot, but supercharged by an impressive and well-chosen cast; while Irons, Depardieu and Malkovich would seem an odd fit as Musketeers, here they are to the manor born and spark delightfully off each other, with DiCaprio almost stealing the film as a campy, smarmy fop (though he perhaps disappears into the background as the "Mask").

Sort of enjoyable, with few clear reasons to be. Nothing about the film stands out, except maybe the miscasting of Malkovich. Irons was rather good, actually.

It's the kind of Hollywood swashbuckling movie you'd expect, and if you enjoy that, then you'll like this. By no means is it a perfect movie, but I've enjoyed it. The setting and costumes are great and there are some good performances. The plot isn't too deep really, most of the plot could just be solved by better communication and not keeping so many secrets, and some of the performances or maybe the script just are a bit off at times. Still though I found it enjoyable for what it was.

Randall Wallace's 1998 "The Man in the Iron Mask" is the umpteen movie adaptation of French author Alexandre Dumas' continuing tale of his famous 3 Musketeers, which as it turns out actually has four members. (This is always the case in every movie, as it is the case in the original book, if you were wondering.) "Iron Mask" is an expensive Hollywood adaptation and has a stellar cast, and writer/director Randall Wallace ("Braveheart") is a man who likes his movies epic.

I watched this movie because I just finished reading The Three Musketeers and this movie works a lot better within the context of the literature it is based on. I think Leo is great is his dual performances, his Louis is especially fun, and the musketeers are all played by actors I adore, but the execution of this film in uneven. The script is often good, but has some cringe-inducing moments and it would be hard to take seriously out of the context of the fun of its source material.

The Man in the Iron Mask is a film that went in completely the wrong direction. It needed to be more action focused, as that's what its characters demand. But instead, a dramatic route was taken, resulting in a boring and overlong film that, despite looking great, features far less depth than one needs to care. Even though the last twenty minutes are very enjoyable, a great idea is largely wasted here.

A movie that takes family values very seriously. Family > friends > state. And as Athos' apology to D'Artagnan shows, these values can congeal into mores through sympathetic vibes.

Not convincing. I still remember the last sentence as hilarious: "And Louis the XIV was a good King, who took care of the interests of the Kingdom of France, protecting the small etc." Well, maybe it was supposed to say: "if Louis XIV's brother, played by DiCaprio, had really reigned at his place, it would've been better", but I don't find it convincing. Dumas' stories, of which the tale was clearly inspired, were always well-rooted in History.

With a cast like this and a great story, this really should have been a much better movie. It wasn't a bad movie, but it wasn't as great as it could have been. Depardieu was pretty funny in his role as Byrne and Irons were also prety entertaining. Leo was a great villain, but very boring in his other, which should have been more painful and I felt let down by his performance, especially by someone of his caliber. It took a little too long for this movie to kick it in high gear.

DiCaprio smacks of bland and boring until things heat up toward the end of the movie; as a matter of fact, the only two semi-convincing actors here are Jeremy Irons and Gabriel Byrne. It's sort-of a low rent 'Count of Monte Cristo,' and it's not terrible by any means, but almost every attribute of the film needs some sprucing. The real plot doesn't even kick in until nearly 80 minutes.

I'm a huge fan of the Three Musketeers mythos, so this movie was kind of fun for me. It came around a time where Leonardo DiCaprio in dual roles was a little much for his talent, but it wasn't poorly done. I think he just wasn't ready for it. The movie as a whole was relatively pleasing. Meh!
