Jerry is a seemingly normal man trying to succeed in his new job at the Milton Bathtub Factory. He lives with his dog, Bosco, and his cat, Mr. Whiskers. Yet something seems off. Jerry is asked to help plan the company picnic, and he meets Fiona, an attractive English girl from accounting. Jerry immediately takes a liking to Fiona and excitedly goes home to tell his pets about her. And surprisingly, they answer. But all this is just the beginning of an insanely bizarre and twisted tale. (Sundance)

Can guarantee you won't watch anything like this in 2015. Completely out there and so much the better for it. Talking pets, heads and a dance sequence that rivals the equally good "Ex Machina". This is the type of role Reynolds gets to show what hes capable of. A hidden gem.

Reynold's doesn't get credit for being the quality of actor he is, and that's probably because his best performances always seem to be in small movies that people either don't see or aren't catered to broad audiences. He's great here, probably the best I've seen him. It's funny, dark, and quite unique.

Ryan Reynolds was enjoyable as the sweet reluctant crazy serial killer. It did turn quite macabre during a few scenes. The happy positive crazy guy who talks with his dog, cat, and severed heads was a bit disconcerting. The ladies in this were also enjoyable. Worth watching if you can tolerate the bloody carnage, dismemberments, and murder.

The deepest, darkest black comedy I've seen in a good long while. The humor here is so murky that, even if you are amused (and I was), you'll feel disturbed for simply being entertained. The mismatched happy tone with the grimly psychotic story are astonishingly effective in leaving the viewer hopelessly ambivalent. I can't say it's a good feeling either, but it is a novel ride, and Reynolds did impress.

I was very surprised by this, I wasn't sure if Reynolds would be able to pull this type of movie off, but it worked so well. He had a lot of depth to explore in this one and I really enjoyed seeing him take it over. Its a solid film that stays focused on its story and keeps you watching to see how far this is going to go. Going into this I was skeptical, yet coming out of it I feel like its a movie I need to own. It hits on a lot of dark notes while still keeping you aloof. Highly recommend.

After a vaguely promising start, the film soon becomes gratuitously unpleasant without being even remotely humorous (the talking pets are particularly unfunny), and fails completely in its efforts to be subversive or tongue-in-cheek. The dance number at the end represents a truly embarrassing attempt to claw back some much-needed levity. The acting is decent, but as a whole it's a complete dud.

I love Ryan Reynolds for doing this. Even though it's quite a broad horror-comedy, Reynolds plays it just straight enough to make Jerry both amiable and absolutely deplorable all in one. The supporting cast keep their end up, and it adds up to a cracking little film.

This is one of those few movies which ticks all its genre boxes. Don't expect a funny goofy movie with hilarious talking pets. This is a deep dark disturbing encounter and it gives a small insight how a 'crazy' person experiences the world around him. Great watch.

Largely funny due to it's nonchalant grimness. The film is undoubtedly dark, and the strange tone it sets up is more akin to something a lot more twee than grisly. But it kinda goes full-steam ahead with the silly aspects, making it that much darker underneath. Reynolds does very well to draw empathy out of us, but never sympathy. His performance(s) tie it together and he's pretty good though part of it does feel a little forced. The framing is also way off about 90% of the time, no energy there

Weird and full of a really dark humour that not everyone can stomach. I really enjoyed this bizarre movie but I'm not sure if it wouldn't have been more effective if it had been done as a short film. Nonetheless, Reynolds convinced in the role of the friendly but deeply disturbed lad who talks to his pets, it was fun to see him in a darker role for a change!

A film with Ryan Reynolds talking to his pets sounds like the sequel to "Looks Who's Talking" nobody asked for, but it works. It perfectly balances the funny and cute with the dark, because trust me it goes dark. Reynolds plays both manic, depressed and skitzo perfectly, but the real scene stealer is Mr. Whiskers. Watch this if you like a funny indie vibe movie with some serious fucked up things going on. Reynolds is at his very best.

Worth a watch for being unique, dark and disturbing. Reynolds plays a decent enough psycho and the world that he sees vs. the actual real world is done well. On the downside, it's not really funny, scary, dramatic or suspenseful...all the genres it purports to be. Cool credits though!

It's unique and that's worth something. The tone is a bit inconsistent, which I guess fits a movie about a guy who hears voices in his head, but I mostly enjoyed it and it blends various genres deftly.

Preoccupied with being "quirky" and "disturbing" without being successful at either. Half-asses it when structuring and creating characters worth giving a fuck about. The mental illness device is an ill-informed gimmick. The director is focused on icing this turd-cake with a cutesy, retro-camp aesthetic (because, subversive!) and leading the actors into heightened tongue-in-cheek performances not out of place in an SNL skit. Fails at comedy, horror and life.

The Voices is a great success -- one of those truly weird movies that probably get overhyped by people like me simply for being "different" -- that gives us a hilarious dark comedy about a man whose cat tells him to murder people. If that simple hook doesn't sound enjoyable to you, then The Voices is not something that you're going to enjoy. For someone like me, it's a very fun movie. Ryan Reynolds is great, and The Voices is something that I absolutely recommend you see.

A quite disturbing movie, but it gracefully leaves the most terrible parts of the plot off screen and with the addition of light humor (even if grotesque), I think viewers can endure it, even if they normally don't have the stomach for a horror (like me). The story is compelling, the main character is likable, so you will probably have a good (and bizarre) time watching it. Recommended if you want a light horror, or if you are interested in the portrayal of mental illnesses.

I appreciate it when a filmmaker uses particular cinematic mechanisms to tell a particular story, instead of mindlessly complying with the conventions of a particular genre, even if they don't entirely succeed. Which is to say that this is not a black comedy horror as it is purported to be, but rather like its central focus it's schizophrenic in nature. Reynolds puts in a highly disturbing performance as Gerry (channeling Jim Carry from 'The Cable Guy') that the rest of the cast cannot match.

I can appreciate weird movies with original ideas, but this one really didn't do anything for me. The concept of animals talking to you in itself sounds like a recipe for a lot of laughs, but it's just not utilized a lot here. For a horror movie, it's not scary, and for dark comedy, it's not really funny either. I wasn't too bored watching it, but not entertained, either. This came out so mediocre, I feel like it was just supposed to be something more.

There is a lot to love about this film. Ryan Reynolds does a great job, the animals are cute, and the film is quirky. Given all those things I'm not really sure why I didn't like it better. I guess its just not as fun as I was hoping and it starts to get a bit tedious towards the end.

Getting the tone right for a dark comedy seems to be one of the more difficult things in filmmaking, but Satrapi and Reynolds nail it. Beyond that, though, it actually seems to do a good job of getting inside the head of somebody suffering from schizophrenia.

I heard voices too while watching this film and I loved what they had to say. This movie is about a loser (Ryan Reynolds) who happens to have a bad mental illness. He hears voices, especially from his pets. His cat tells him to kill people while his dog (as most good doggies do) tells him that he can still be a good human. This movie has a great balance of being hilarious, scary and sad. You feel bad for Reynolds, but you also fear for any woman that comes near him...

feels like the product of its protagonist's mentally ill headspace, or the realisation of a horror ideal: there's this harrowing lack of meaning/self-awareness at its core (despite humor that ought to seem winking as hell). PDL (if barry took the 'smash it' convo literally) and OBS. & REPORT are necessary comparison points but also unsatisfactory. so many small decisions here are distressingly WRONG, lines are blurred in such weird ways. kendrick is amazing. i'll never forget this abomination.

In a way, the perfect Ryan Reynolds vehicle: you can be partly charmed by his goofiness, AND you can hate him, with impunity. This flick is not actually as awful as it sounds, and rather fun. Why is it the ungrateful, opportunistic twats only get what they deserve in slasher flicks? Usually they end up duping the guy and marrying him... this is SO much more satisfying.

A dark, weirdly funny story that will appeal to those who enjoyed 2012's Cabin in the Woods. Much credit has to go to screenwriter Michael R. Perry, who manages to make main character Jerry likable despite his homicidal streak. With much of the story being filtered through Jerry's perception, Satrapi is able to play with the visuals, jumping between what Jerry sees and the reality of his situation to hilarious effect. This is an empathetic film, but first and foremost it's insanely funn

Marjane Satrapi unexpectedly comes up with a very American and very retro horror comedy (I don't think I've seen many animals or severed heads speak in movies since the 80s and early 90s). It's silly and clever all at once and I deem it wholesome entertainment. The cast is endearing.

The Voices taunts an interesting premise and it delivers, sort off. When the film goes dark, it's splendid and funny and worthwhile, but too often you're left with Reynolds character resembling Ben Stiller's Simple Jack from Tropic Thunder. Reynolds' performance, along with Arterton and Kendrick's, is actually pretty good, but I couldn't stop wondering if the film would have been better if they had replaced a lot of the bumbling with wit.

To give it some credit, this is a lot more genuinely bizarre than just "Ryan Reynolds goes dark" (or it is that too, but the way he goes about it is either a spectacularly severe miscalculation or an act of "subversion" on par with Jody Hill except even meaner and a lot dumber and not funny, but either way it's the sort of trainwreck probably worth watching once, preferably with friends and a lot of booze, but i can't help but feel a little guilty that that probably isn't what Satrapi intended.
