For a vanity project about a singular talent it's very generous to the role of the posse/squad/homies in solidifying the man's confidence and credibility. It's also a great illustration of factory work and white trash living - my personal areas of expertise. Eminem's scowl is magnetic, he's almost comically irritable, a time-bomb in a cyclone of social pressure that could BLAOW at any moment. Oh, there goes gravity!

Eminem does a surprisingly good job acting, especially when compared to other would-be rappers turned actors. But, in the end, the movie doesn't have any special about it to really draw you in. It's alright but nothing great.

Eminem has found his other love besides rap and that would be acting. Surprisingly, he is really good at it. The soundtrack to this is probably one of the best in cinema, as it not only has five original songs all written and performed by him, but also has the now legendary Lose Yourself. The rap battles are also very well-done, but there's something missing from 8 Mile, and that would be an engaging plotline. Still a decent film and I actually wouldn't mind seeing Eminem in other roles.

There are a lot of things I could say to knock this film. I could call it 'The Wizard' of hip-hop, with "Lose Yourself" filling in for Super Mario Bros 3. I could knock the obligatory scenes where Em, an accused homophobe, makes good with the steel plant's gay guy. I could say it has pacing issues, or call it predictable and unnecessary. I won't. This is just a likable movie, through and through. Its battles are hypnotic, its leading man captivating. This is a better movie than it needed to be.

Typically closely observed study of a particular community (rap) from Hanson avoids bloat through economy of storytelling, relying on vivid evocation of the milieu and resting on the strong performance of Eminem (painfully intense and tamped down), and a fine support cast, especially Basinger; she's so good that there's arguably too much or too little of her for the size of her role. Muted finale eschews a genuine victory in favour of winning the battle of successfully "proving" yourself.

A compelling (and entertaining) examination of human courage and personal sacrifice, "8 Mile" is filled with flawed characters that project the torn dreams of the human soul, and projects this with complete authenticity. The film's terrific final scene ends the film on the right, powerful note. It's a fantastic moment that pays its dues to Jimmy, a man that rises partially above his demons, and came one step closer to rising above his fear. [Full review]

Simple Rocky story but I thought this one was done extremely well. Setting it in Detroit and making that place feel real and making the characters specific to that time and place (as much as you can in a movie like this) really drew me in. Pleasantly suprised. Eminem's fine in the role and the way he pulls off his success surprised me. That's why I liked this: you know how this kind of movie has to end, but it should surprise you in how it gets there.

First time I saw this movie I went by myself, luckily I got to go back and see it two more times with other people. I really got amped as this movie started up old school Mobb Deep, and the music choices (2Pac, B.I.G., Beaties, Outkast and even P.E.) really made the movie for me. Sadly they didn't put any of their stuff on the soundtrack. The rap-battles were great too. Much better then Who's The Man.

Good movie to pass time. Suffers from a pacing issue, where for the payoff to be effective it means we don't get to see a whole lot of rapping. That's the Hollywood element, where after facing some hurdles in one's personal life, suddenly talent shines through. I'd prefer to see more of the work, the trialling, the failing: process over apotheosis. Still, I may have called it a masterpiece if it was shot on 8mm with no name actors, so I'm probably biased.

I've never been to Detroit, and if I had I'd certainly not have seen the parts of it shown here. The film is certainly enlightening from that perspective, educating the viewer how life is growing up in such an environment. Eminem acts well, though one wonders how much of it is really acting since he experienced the very things his character is going through. Worth seeing even if it's a rather cliche story of underdog making good.

I have always criticized movies, where known singers, rap-artists taking part or having even lead-role. 8 Mile is different, here the lead actor is not a superhuman or action hero, he is gifted young man from Detroit ghetto. Great rimes and the spirit to give everything, when you have this "one shot", is stalking viewers a long time after leaving the theater.

It's overall watchable but it's still full of the drama clichés, making it a generic Hollywood flick. A pretty good photography of Detroit urban landscapes. It's rare to have such a depiction of these derelict US neighborhoods, but there's unfortunately no systemic analysis of poverty (it seems more like a character flaw than anything), and there's a weird racial tension in having a white man being the hero there. The battles were good and save the movie from being bland.

Almost a biography about Marshall "Eminem" Mathers' upbringing in the forgotten part of Detroit. It's rap battles are almost entirely well-executed and it builds to them in a spectacular way. I had my expectations low but this managed to eclipse them by executing everything in an interesting way.

Eminem gives a pretty powerful performance and really carries this movie. This rap movie though really is a boxing movie in disguise so it carries a lot of the benefits as well as the flaws that boxing movie has.It is very predictable and you can tell from the first 15 minutes what the ending is gonna be.That being said all good boxing movies acknowledge that fact and they make the most of it.So the final act of this movie is a really satisfying and epic conclusion to this well-told story.

Eminem brings the fire in a film that basically depicts his rise to fame and the struggles he faced a long the way. This is middle of the pack as far as writing is concerned but it definitely has heart and emotion and that often helps a film score higher in the end.

The rap battles laced throughout are awesome and really get your adrenaline pumping, but they're by far the best parts of the film. Though Jimmy is a decent protagonist, the gritty drama of poverty and racial tension in his life is never fully realized (though the themes do come together poignantly in his final confessional rap battle), thanks to a script that doesn't take the time to develop any plot points beyond a couple scenes (the caught-cheating romantic interest being a perfect example).

Glad to see this wasn't a rise to fame biopic like I feared. It's a story about inner city life that is neither hopeful nor hopeless. There's no big drama though there are plenty of dramatic moments, and that helps sell the feel of the movie and the characters. I can't say the rap battles were particularly engaging to me, and a lot of the interpersonal relationships are underdeveloped, but the big picture is an engaging and sympathetic portrait of lower class life in a decaying city.

I've only got one shot to get this first line right, oh heck with it, I'll just move on... 8 Mile stars Eminem (not to be confused with the delicious candies) where he plays the part of a white rapper trying to make it big in the Detroit rap scene. His character's name is Bunny Rabbit and he's trying to get out of his mom's trailer home that he's sharing with her...

8 Mile is a semi-autobiographical movie starring rapper Eminem. Unlike the hip-hop/rap movies of the 80's, this movie has substance, and is not just a cinematic music showcase. Like other movies of this genre , it deals with a guy trying to make it big and abandon his impoverished lifestyle through music, but surprisingly this is not a rags-to-riches story.

Basically the Eminem movie. Really its not so bad, with some legendary music and an awesome rap battle setting. However, a pretty lousy main cast and relegation of good actors (Mackie and Shannon) to weak parts was not a smart move. The struggle and story is real and relatable enough but really between the acting and a lack of any memorable shots or cinematography, 8 Mile suffers the same syndrome as Notorious.

Eminem buffs his resume, as a skittish dude who came up hard, but the grittiness rings true, and the rhymes, while not approaching those of his masterpiece, Stan, are effective. "8 Mile" is a fittingly ugly looking movie. It tells the story of a white factory worker and rapper who goes by the name B Rabbit. I guess I equate the quality of this film with a line Mekhi Phifer gives. After Eminem wins one of the battles, his pals are congratulating him and he admits, "That Leave it to Beaver line almost killed me." Mekhi sums up this film, and my least favorite misconceptions of society as a whole when he replies, "Yeah, but you flipped it on him. You a fucking genius."

No scene takes place without screaming and someone leaving. Unfortunately, an intensity the movie never mirrors. Hanson turns "Imitation of Life" ironically upside/down; portraying Eminem's hatred of his white trailer trash background and a wish to be part of the black establishment through hip-hop. We lack Sirk's distinct ironic cinematography for satisfaction - either grittiness (ie 70s exploitation) or posh (City of God) - so it's just street-melodrama elevated by entertaining rap-battles.

Although the rap battles are sometimes pretty cool and the environments it shows are authentically gloomy, this is a boring, lousy ride through a white man's life. A pop-star acting vehicle not unlike some of the more serious (everything being relative) of the early Elvis vehicles. (The Eminem character is even addressed on occasion as "Elvis.") On the score of "realism," one cannot fault the views of the ravaged urbanscape of modern Detroit (Michael Moore territory) or the trailer-park squalor of the hero's home life; and Eminem himself, who came out of this background, does nothing in his acting to dispel the illusion.
