Like Dr. Strangelove met an Iannucci production, and the love-child took sedatives. To be fair, this is still a quite good film. It develops a strong emotional connection with all the characters being affected, elicits a few chuckles, and boasts of an impressive ensemble cast. But it also hints at a dark political comedy that lacked something (perhaps simply bolder direction) needed to be truly great.

This film offers engaging drama and a genuinely compelling moral problem that the audience must grapple with. The problem is that if one analyses the reality of the drone war in the real world, the film scans as basically pro-war propaganda. It would be fantastic if the real-life drone war were waged with as much concern for innocent civilians as depicted in the film. Similarly, the real-life drone war is waged with very flimsy and uncertain intelligence capabilities compared to the film.

If a movie isn't fun, funny or thrilling, then it damn well better be informative about the world in which we live, and luckily this one is. This gives you a window into international war-on-terror drone politics, which either is of interest to you or it isn't (and you would have no hope of liking this). A thrill-a-minute flick this is not. No helicopter-to-helicopter jumping stunts, no American flag-waving, no Hollywood melodrama really. But informative and makes you think.

Eye in the Sky is very narrow, focusing on the moral, political, and legal consequences of drone strikes. It manages to do so in an efficient, thrilling, and genuinely thought-provoking manner. Thanks to a strong cast, great direction from Gavin Hood, a solid screenplay, and a fantastic scenario, it manages to bring many varying viewpoints together in a way that's not preachy, but in a way that'll make you think. It "goes there," so to speak, and is a movie that's hard to stop thinking about.

This takes dark comedy to a new level. Political and military bureaucrats measuring which micro-percentage of collateral damage is acceptable as balanced against their personal exposure for ultimate blame is funny, but only because the absurdity is so obvious to everyone else--and lives do hang in the balance. And the inner workings of global drone warfare is as fascinating as train wrecks have always been. You just can't turn away.

It started off slow but really kicked it up once the real shit started happening. You know the trailer for American Sniper, and how you thought the movie might be an interesting film full of hard choices, but then didn't deliver? This actually does that. It's built around a very simple premise but the debate between everybody and what they go through is riveting stuff. Also, props to the film makers for not copping out at the end. That would have pissed me off.

A well-intentioned and suspenseful thriller centered on a drone strike and the potential fallout. The film was solid and kept me actively involved and caring about all the characters throughout it's duration.

The one overwhelming quality of those involved in drone strikes, all the way up and down the chain of command? Caring. A festival of empathy such as you have never seen; whether for or against an individual strike, boy do they fucking CARE, about civilians and suffering and death. Even the politicians sort of care, except the one who seems like she'd be against assassination on principle. Actual recordings of those involved in drone strikes give a somewhat different impression, of course...

A well-made thriller with excellent direction and suspense. A little action, too. The philosophy, morals and ethics of the film are mostly solid and ask interesting questions, though more than a few lines of dialogue are preaching or exposition disguised as conversation. The ending, though, hits like a ton of bricks, especially when the audience sees things the characters don't.

Great as a tech focused military suspense thriller, but you can't help wonder if there's so much moralizing in real life... I'm sure the training/indoctrination takes care of that.

This movie is kind of preachy. Know that going in. It's very specific in its message on war morality, which is neither a good nor a bad thing. It has, at times, rather narrow and wooden points of view, taking one specific forced jab at stereotypical American apathy. But there is a lot to love about this, and a lot of that is Alan Rickman, who is the focal point of much of the film's black comedy. Maybe more finger-pointy than it need be. Rickman's last line slaughtered me. Worth checking out.

A fine reminder that those "in charge" are really just people like you and me. A bit cheesy at times but very entertaining still. Paul establishes his excellency in emotions. Mirren is fine and Rickman said a worthy goodbye. He will be missed. *Good

And with all of its intentionally unanswered questions, the movie makes one thing very clear: In spite of the latest strategy changes and new technologies and the ability to achieve almost surreal separation from the battlefield, war and the evil hatred evidenced by terrorism are still horrible, life-rending things. And no one touched by them walks away whole. (pluggedin.com)

This was a good one. The metaphor of would you sacrifice 1 to save the 5. It was directed well and the tensions were high all throughout. I did wonder what would happen, although I would've like it better if we weren't shown what happened to the girl at the end. I hope it really is this hard every time a bomb is dropped from a drone.

very thrilling. unfortunately with some flaws at the end, well you could actually see the whole premise with the girl as a bit ridiculous/forced, if you want ... but up to that point this was truly excellent.

I liked it, but made me wince so hard...as if anyone would give two shits about the collateral. Propaganda. But...as a thriller, it works well. Rickman's last stand. "Never tell a soldier that he does not know the cost of war."

An exceptional look at the high tech war on terror & the difficult decision people are forced to make to conduct it. The technology involved was very impressive. Their man on the ground showed remarkable bravery. The story was engaging & more than a little unnerving. Great production & music. Performances were very good. A tragic & timely story well worth watching. Not for children. Chalk up another one for the good guys, but don't forget to mourn for the innocent.

Centering around the decisions made preparing one drone strike in a friendly country, Eye in the Sky is a compelling watch that forces you to consider the many arguments that come into play in such a sensitive situation. Distracting gripes exist though, including the choice to make the 'collateral damage' just one little girl (instead of a wedding full of guests for example), and the mawkish blubbering of all these tough politicians and military types, which just feels a little far-fetched.

boring predictable contrived manipulative crap... I did eventually wonder whether this was perhaps intended to be darkly comic rather than legitimately tense, but the market for repeatedly hammering the same note for ~90 minutes (and then finishing with a megadose of schmaltz) seems extremely niche.

A film documenting the moral and legal minefield of modern warfare by eliminating terrorists through drone attacks. The entire movie illustrates one single attack and all the political play which goes into such a decision. Even if it's depicts a very isolated event, Eye in the Sky (2015) delivers a solid thriller. Politically it's probable a little too safe from a European/USA view to really make a lasting impression. However it does show how difficult the international climate is.

Unexpectedly good film! It starts slowly and builds up in tension as it goes on. Interesting plot that's not been done before and explores tough questions which have no right or wrong answers, debatably at least! A nice set of actors as well, sad to see Alan Rickman in his final acting role but he did it justice.

A film that brilliantly captures a singular moment, when decisions become increasingly blurred politically, legally and morally. It does an incredible job of keeping you engaging by showing the film in a very real time manner and the performances are all great. The film is both intense and interesting at the same time, and it is fascinating to see all parts and roles of a bigger picture.

Gets by with a solid cast (love me some Barkhad Abdi) and uninterrupted tension that is handled quite deftly. Threatens to sink occasionally under the weight of its moral and political pretensions - which came across as preachy, manipulative and insincere - despite its challenging thematic purposes. That ridiculous beetle drone is the most pandering type of fiction, I can't even get my DJI Ronin app to run without crashing.

Hood takes what should be a routine mission and turns it into a suspense masterclass, partly via a "separation of powers" which requires constant communication between the eyes, tongue and brains of the military, but also by throwing in every minor obstacle he can think of at ground level. The scenario allows him to juggle the serious moral issues with real-life practicalities, and a good dash of political satire. It's an unsubtle film but hugely entertaining, and hardly lets up for a second.

It's pretty slick, occassionally tense, oftenly clunky. Lumbers from Millgramy to the trolley problem to other predictable ethical stuff. I've met enough of those in Westminster polytricks and the most cowardly of the armed forces to find the teary-eyed hand-wringing in this near-comical.

A sharp thriller involving a single drone strike, the price of war, and the politics in deciding who lives and dies. The acting is exceptional, which is extra impressive considering many people are in many different locations and supposedly interacting via phone, computer chat, and visuals from drones. People on both sides who look to see things that are going against their political views will probably think this movie is attacking only them but it is a fair representation of both sides.

It felt a bit contrived, which made it hard to relate or really sympathise with the characters and events. I suppose I appreciate what the film was trying to do, I just don't think it really worked in the end, at least not as a film. It's watchable sure, but I wouldn't really recommend it.

Eye in the Sky asks a provocative question: Does conscience still figure in modern warfare? Rickman, in his last onscreen role, takes on the issue with the brilliance and bracing humanity that marked his career. His final scene, a passionate declaration about what a military man really knows of war, is one of his finest moments as an actor. Rickman deserves our salute, as does a film that honors his fierce intelligence.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND: Powerful stuff. Important moral issues. Well scripted & shot. Fine acting. Made my palms sweat & jaw clench (at each passing of the buck) so it clearly had effect it was aiming for. Only potentially OTT & heavy-handed emotional jab was tiny sub-plot with doll but is 1 Very small criticism. | Bigger problem is I fear hits never weighed this carefully in reality | Aaron P & Abdi shone in fine cast. Mirren & Rickman: good as ever. | RIP Alan; U were true great of Stage & Screen.
