This is difficult to review because it is, for better and worse, so different from the beloved comic. For better, it's more outright Queer! It's super accessible! For worse, it's kiddified. It has no stakes. It fails to execute its takedown of the system; the anarchist vanishes after her big moment and the status quo is OK again: the armoured police continue to roam the parks. For neither here-nor-there, it's fun! It's energetic! It's lovely! It needs a pass from the 2D animators from Arcane!

so, so close to portraying the problems with institutions, until The Institute turns against its own Director, defanging the critique. reformism aside, the queerness is charming (and in one case, even fanged)

Found this to be a drag almost right away. Relevant (if occasionally clumsy) allegory aside, the film's themes of otherness and being an outsider are handled in finger-drummingly rote fashion, and it doesn't help that we're meant to direct our sympathies to two surprisingly unappealing leads (a total wet-blanket and an exhaustingly chaotic foil). There are bits of fun to be had here and there, but it always loops back around to a tiresome storyline and characters with minimal rooting interest.

Nimona: "Kids. Little kids. They grow up believing that they can be a hero if they drive a sword into the heart of anything different. And I'm the monster? I don't know what's scarier. The fact that everyone in this kingdom wants to run a sword through my heart... or that sometimes, I just wanna let 'em."

I've been here since Nimona was a webcomic, and gosh is it wonderful to see her this way. This movie makes me angry with how good it is, because the ways it plays with character designs and visuals are something that any animation company could be doing but aren't. Every square inch is full of character and it's achingly fun.

After watching I had to read the graphic novel too. While the movie is solid I kind of prefer the novel; the slightly darker, more bloodthirsty characters and the less conventionally heroic ending slightly outweigh the movie's extended (and unsurprisingly She-Ra-like) backstory for me. That said it's still a very solid movie, with great voice acting and staying admirably frank (ie queer as hell) about its characters.

A retro medieval... futuristic... something. Anyway. I liked the concept but what I loved was the incredible output, animation, character development, and bursting action. And the rebellious and bold story was a heartbroken triangle. It remained me distantly Spider-Verse movies.

They took the characters and elements of the graphic novel and made a new powerful story out of it! Beautiful, funny, and heartfelt. And the music was awesome!

This was an *extremely* fun movie. The characters are excellent, the setting is something I've been fascinated by for a while now, and the way it plays with its LGBTQIA+ themes is sorely needed right now. A must-watch.

The biggest fault of Nimona is that it was released in a very inopportune time. I'm completely done with LGBTQQIP2SAA themes. Main character is gay – fine. But the not-so-subtle trans allegory on top of everything else is overwhelming. I'm just as opposed to conservative propaganda. If there's a character that is deeply religious – fine. But when other far-right ideologies seep in (abortion, gun control, etc.) it becomes too much. I don't want politics in EVERY piece of entertainment.

Netflix's "Nimona" is a refreshing animated film with stylistic flair and strong vocal performances. Despite some tonal inconsistencies and hit-or-miss jokes, the movie showcases thoughtful character animation, effective cinematography, and an enjoyable musical score. A competent and well-realized effort that stands out among recent animated releases. 6.5/10

An utter (and utterly unexpected) delight – of course, the broad outlines of this plot have been done to death, but what makes this work are the richly defined and beautifully played characters, with Moretz as usual pulling out all the stops to carry her apparently flippant “outsider” through some hefty emotional turns in the final act, matched by Ahmed’s solid and stoic hero who also manages to play some old tunes with new notes. Slam bang action never lets up for a moment!

Nimona, the character, brings tons of fun, chaotic energy to this movie and is 90% of the entertainment, but her (their?) trickster god powers trivializes any plot point or tension. The admirable, liberal morals of the movie gets a little cloyingly didactic for me, but I work with kids that could use a little liberal instruction and I hope it will have the desired effect on them. Lastly, her immense power and the fact that she can turn into a literal monster works against these same morals.

Energetic, too say the least, and, in combination with the light tone and a decent story, I found this energy very entertaining.

Social commentary up the wazoo, but the movie doesn't quite take the time to properly digest it all. Could have used a proper epilogue.

Fairly generic and familiar feeling animated film with pretty likable characters, a cool art design, and a few interesting ideas. There's a bit of a twist 3/4ths of the way through that kind of comes out of nowhere and feels a bit tacked on for some sort of credit, but it'll ruffle the feathers of people who deserve their feathers ruffled, so no harm no foul.

Nimona's kind of annoying for some of it. There's a flashback scene later on that hits really hard and while the finale afterward is relatively unoriginal, the shadow Godzilla emotional kick worked for me, so I wouldn't change it. I appreciate riot grrrl energy but the jokes sucked and got in the way of it trying to do something more substantial. With that said, I was always entertained by it, warts and all, and the animation is decent.

This is a somewhat sugar rush, energy laden (i.e. hyperactive type) animated film. It has the look, I felt, somewhat of a 'Cartoon Saloon' film (the people who made 'The Secret of Kells' and 'Song of the Sea') but its much more hyper and would probably appeal more to kids and adolescents. The shape shifting element of the main character is kind of endearing and its entertaining and watchable but a bit over the top perhaps.

I’ve never read the source material, but this was great as a stand-alone effort. It has an interesting development history, but I glad it got made, because it’s worth your time and then some. Nicely voiced, super animation, slightly clunky story, but very fine overall.

Despite a weak beginning (clunky exposition dump) & ending (cheapened resolution), Nimona does well enough to deliver an engaging plot, with decent humour & surprisingly developed characters. I ended up really liking the animation. The pacing is a little odd at times, but the film never drags. While diversity & acceptance are large themes of the film, I liked that the traditional hero archetype isn't thrown under the bus to achieve it. Nimona stole every scene she was in.

I'm not a super fan of the super glossy animation style they used, but there is no doubt there was a life to it all, and they experimented a lot with it. Entertainment wise, the humor was a little too TikTok for my liking, but half the gags landed. Cool with the morphing bits. Nimona was charming, if not a little annoying. At least her sidekick (or the other way around) kept it level, more fitting of my mood. Would love for them to build on this.
