The moral ambiguities of cloning as well as the philosophical and spiritual questions imposed in this film, to say nothing of the obvious and impending urgency of the issues raised as real life catches up with and surpasses this sci-fi drama, are handled with as awe-inspiring and mind-blowing intelligence and as shrewd intellectual suave as you'd expect from Michael Bay.

Nice film with a good structure. I especially liked the dark atmosphere in it, but I have to admit that there are some flaws in the story. The end was one big cliched "saw that coming from miles away" kind of end so that wasn't too good too. But this film could interest me and grabbed my attention for the most of it.

Bay's greatest sin? So many to choose from. Here he takes a large dump (Bay patented) on an excellent sci-fi premise by turning it into loud explosions & loud chase scenes. "Loud is key, people!" Bay brays. Movies like this assume they can give audiences LESS substance as long they zip past things fast enough so we won't notice. I do notice. Just b/c they get teens to say "COOL!" 50x doesn't mean it's any good. I thought its relative failure might mean less future junk. Damn you, Transformers!

The Island on first viewing was reasonably enjoyable. But after watching it a second time I have realised its true to form Michael Bay bollocks. The whole film just feels like a good idea with so much potential that was sadly handed to Michael Bay to direct. Despite being strong on paper, Michael Bay as per fails to get the best out of his cast. Over top and bombastic CG can't make up for the weak script and plot holes. Strong cast and concept on paper, but still remarkably forgettable and dull.

So bloated I was fast-forwarding *through a Scarlett Johansson sex scene*, The Island is about three chase scenes too long. Bay remains a fantastic composer of shots but this movie is overlong by just enough to sink it.

I really liked the idea of the plot (however it is in many ways a copy of Huxley's Brave New World), but the movie could be so much better. I really hated to see the silly acting of Ewan McGregor and Scarlett Johansson; actors who I'm supposed to like in most other movies. I guess Michael Bay is to blame.

Around the 100-minute mark, I started to realize this all just felt like a collection of scenes. I guess that's what a film is -- a collection of scenes -- but usually there's something interesting tying them all together. It also doesn't help that this may be the worst offender of 2000s cinematography -- overly saturated with lens flares and ugly colouring. Steve Buscemi, always the professional, gives it his all in his brief time here.

Michael Bay really pisses me off. I was so annoyed after seeing this movie not because it was so bad, but because it had so much potential! This was such a good premise, with very good actors and a good script. But the retarded director decided to have fun and create a horrible, horrible movie. I am not trying to be one of the "anti-Hollywood explosions suck" kind of guy, but Michael Bay is really bad. No one would argue that he has no understanding of what makes a good movie, but in this mov

The first half of this movie wasn't too bad. I enjoy a good utopian/dystopian story, even if it isn't very original. However, the second half ruined everything by becoming a typical shitty Michael Bay action movie. The dialogue was hideous. The humour and one-liners made me cringe. The music was lame and predictable. The Microsoft product placement was embarrassing. The biggest reason to watch this film for me was the actors. However, they couldn't push past the bad screenplay and direction.

A typical Michael Bay action movie disguised as an intelligent thriller. It provides plenty of well-directed action in the second-half, but this also ruins the development of the complex ideas that were touched upon at the beginning of the movie. Thus results in a fun but fairly stupid movie.

The plot-idea at the centre of this movie is interesting, but that doesn't really help when your way of developing it is to blow up lots of stuff and have people running around without rime or reason for almost two hours. The setup never feels real and we never get into it as a credible life before the "veil is lifted."

Only 5 million for your own clone? There'd be a hell of a lot more than 2500 of them then. That, and 100 other things, make up the plot holes in The Island. Also, Ewan Macgregor appears to have borrowed some speeder bikes from George Lucas and taken them for this film, along with a lightsaber sound effect for a laser sight on the bizarre harpoon guns (that aren't tazers for some reason).

The Island is a film that would have been better off sticking to one of its two means of telling a story. Did it want to be a straight-up action film, or did it want to be a science fiction picture about what "real" is? The result is a mixture of both, neither working quite as well as it should, and the film never comes together as a whole. It's still entertaining, but its forgettable and pretty easy to ignore. I had a decent time with it, but I doubt I'll remember it in a few days time.

Before Transformers hit, this was far and away Michael Bay's best work (not that that says much). He recycles Bad Boys' best sequences on a story that's worthwhile. I've seen it three times now and it never ceases to thrill and entertain. I have an awful hard time believing this flick tanked at box office the same summer Fantastic Four cleaned house. Yes it's derivative and sure, the trailers spoiled the movie's surprise, but that doesn't mean it wasn't a kick-ass good time.

It's a fun movie that sorts of drop its substance toward the end when the action starts. Mostly because it swaps from a suspense dystopia mood to some big boom boom movie, and that gives a bit of whiplash. The product placement hilariously badly aged, but the technology and special effects still holds up pretty well. Though for oblivious people made out of civilians, the two main characters are waaay too good at survival...
