Growing up in Portland, Oregon, Matt Groening did not particularly like school, which is what originally turned him towards drawing. In the mid-1980s, he moved to Los Angeles and started drawing a comic strip named "Life in Hell" which eventually became published in the newspaper where he worked. In 1988, James Brooks, looking for a filler in the television show "The Tracy Ullman show", turned towards a framed "Life in Hell" strip on his wall and contacted Groening. The animated shorts that Groening created were "The Simpsons".

My score is mostly for seasons 3-10, which were nothing short of phenomenal. The massive amount of parental angst this elicited in the early days seems truly hilarious given where society was even five years later, let alone now. I haven't seen a new episode in years, but the show's still going, so I have to assume SOMEONE'S watching.

Impossible to rate. The first 10 or so seasons are mostly magic, especially if you saw them as a kid. Now it's just garbage that's going nowhere at the speed of light. A walking corpse that keeps marching on. A slowly dying animal that shrieks at night due to failed organs and blinding pain. For the love of god, Matt Groening, please put The Simpsons down. It doesn't deserve to suffer like this. Sooner or later you'll have to let go. It's time.

Is it fair to rate it even if I didn't watch all 25 seasons (or 26, or 27 or...JESUS CHRIST ALREADY!!!) As iconic a thing as there can be, this show transcends both animation and situational comedy. It's a phenomenon, for lack of a better word. The Simpsons are so ubiquitous in the world today that even phrases written for the show are now in the god damn dictionary! It created an entire universe for 3 generations of kids/adults to enjoy and partake in. Not bad...not bad at all!

The first nine seasons or so are the greatest work of entertainment that the modern world has ever produced, and I say that entirely without hyperbole. Most episodes beyond that point are worth ignoring entirely, and the mantle it once assumed in terms of its postmodern aesthetic, depth of character, sharpness of satire, fluidity of animation and style of humor has since been taken up by shows like Gravity Falls and Rick & Morty.

MAKE A SEPARATE WEBSITE FOR TV, OR MINIMALLY BREAK THE SHOW DOWN BY INDIVIDUAL SEASONS - I don't care. Fox can tack on as many crap seasons onto the Simpsons as they want but S1-S13 will always be good enough for me to give this show a perfect score. I stopped watching the show after S17 or S18. But that prime Conan era will serve to be some of the greatest American comedy for all eternity. Growing up watching this with my family (I had a cool mom) was one of the best memories I'll have.

This is kind of the hardest show to rate on all of Criticker. At its best (season 4, and a halo surrounding that season for a couple seasons in each direction) it was probably the single best show on all of television. For the last decade... well, less so. Part of me says I should just give it a 99 score for how good it was at its peak, but that would feel disingenuous for a show I've now only seen about 30% of the episodes of. 80 feels right, I guess?

The Beatles of television. When it's good, it's really good and when it's bad you can't understand what the hell it's still doing on the air. It crazily predicts the future multiple times, it has a hundred characters that are etched into everyone's mind and has provided thousands of laughs. Expecting it to end on season 30 which is a crazy accomplishment that we will never see again.

This is where the TV blanket rating decision falls down, because here I'm rating seasons 3-9 which are what most people think of when they create entire conversations out of Simpsons references. Post-2000 Simpsons is this uncanny valley of imitating Family Guy (that was originally imitating the Simpsons) that I'll ignore. Favorite episodes: You Only Move Twice, Treehouse of Horror V, Marge vs the Monorail & Cape Feare. Single best gag is the Planet of the Apes musical from A Fish Called Selma.

So iconic is the Simpsons, yet to rate a show that's gone on- heck, dragged on- for over 25 years proves difficult. It was amazing in its first ten years. It's muddled through ever since, but we are so entranced by the Simpsons family and show's cast that we've kept it going past its best material.

It's an animation classic that's been on as long as I can remember, but really started going downhill after about three seasons. Sometimes it can still hit gold, but most episodes are meh. It's been eclipsed in it's almost 30 years by edgier and funnier animation, but the Simpsons will always be remembered for paving the way to success for these shows and pushing the bar in what is acceptable in cartoons.

Again, how do I assign one rating to a show that is older than I am and has been around long enough to be divided up into different sub-series in multiple think-pieces about said show? All in all, I love The Simpsons. It has its fair share of misses, but it is classic for a reason and it has done a fantastic job of keeping up a relatively high standard for the past decade now, even though its Golden Age has passed.

I'm totally ignoring the newer seasons because I got to give it up to the show that I've literally been watching since the day of my birth. I still revisit the golden era (season 3-9) and I'm astounded by what a perfect 22 minutes of humorous entertainment it is, that so wonderfully encapsulates many aspects of our culture. I have such an attachment to this show, I think I'm closer to the Simpsons than my real family. To be honest, seasons 10-14 are worth watching, too.

(S1-9) Not as great as I once thought just watching highlights clips on YouTube instead of studying. It turns out this was a flattering format: outside of seasons 6 and 7 itʼs very rare for an entire episode to hold up, the many individual segments of supreme joke stacking, joke subversion and media satire swimming in a big soup of uninspired nonsense. So the classical era is shorter than reported, and to a higher degree than one would like to admit this is just TV.

contrary to everyone else, I will rate for what the show is now. People do not get that is not that Simpsons become not great (a very forgivable thing given it lasted so long, see 'south park': diminished results but mostly still south park) but it is actively bad, and more than that it is not the Simpsons. And that, Simpsons 2.0 IS worse than a lot of bad tv shows from its time (1998-2024). It is worse than big bang theory. It is worse than two and a half man. It is worse than Big Mouth.

How to rate a show like the Simpsons? For about eight years, it was one of the best thing ever. But for 24 years it has been mostly pretty bad, which is worse than every bad show that's ever existed. It's also so deeply embedded in pop culture (especially for people more-or-less my age) that it's impossible to have a reasonable point of view about it.

How do you rate something like this? During the first 8 or 9 Seasons it was one of the best shows on Television at the time, and was probably the singular most influential piece of 90s pop culture; however those early seasons feel dated nowadays in its values and humour, a product of its era whose once sharply satirical bite has been dulled over time. This, of course, was followed by 20+ seasons of mediocrity which long overstayed anyone's welcome. Best Episode: "Marge vs. the Monorail"

First couple of Seasons this was great. Especially if you compare the first 3 Seasons to Family Guy's first 3 Seasons. This was way better. But now that it's Season 31 this has been trash. The 1st Season concentrated more on a story line. Also Homer was not dumb for some reason. He was sharp and would chase Bart. Then they made him dumb. I liked it when I was a kid. I think they ought to get this off the air now.

Up to season 25E08 - dropped there. Phenomenal early seasons, went bad quickly afterwards. The tipping point were overt satanic chants - a great symptom of the decline of the American (and Western) family as an institution. From a family-friendly show it started feeling more like a covert operation instead. Alas it's a shame, as seasons 2-8 roughly are pure TV gold and a cultural phenomenon we may never get anything resembling.

Very mediocre, very comfortable, exactly what you expect from standard American television. By now, the vast majority of the show has been bad, and the nostalgia of the early seasons seems to cause fans to forget that the last 16 seasons of this show have been outright uninteresting. Solid premises and jokes are lost to poor delivery, and lack of timing. The satire is clearly evident, but that doesn't elevate it in any way... it's just there.

The Simpsons is a pretty hard series to rate, especially given how friggin long its been on air. The first few seasons were fairly bland and garish, but after that point the series hit its stride and became comedic genius. After some point though, The Simpsons comedy became less and less effective and a lot of the time it felt like they did their best try to shove as many celebrity cameos that they could on the show. A respectable series overall, but not one I'm terribly attached to.

Possibly the hardest show to rate? Anyone with half a brain knows the first 8 to 10 Seasons are possibly the greatest thing ever to have been on television. Its decline is possibly the saddest thing ever to have happened to the small screen, and whenever an episode comes on and it's in widescreen you know not to waste your time. Many post 2000 episodes are utterly unwatchable. Even so the 90's seasons are unrivalled.
