The qualities that made the ostentatious first act so intriguing, if uneven, are ultimately replaced with a far more grounded (read: more boring) sensibility for no good reason and a manufactured sense of virtuousness. This begins as an interesting mess, but it ends as the kind of mess that wins major industry awards (derogatory).

Yeah no. I started vibing with it and assumed I would walk away defending the movie, but it quickly started coming off as misinformed and, quite frankly, goofy. I never got brows, but I lost interest in what happened halfway through. The acting is actually great (minus Gomez, sorry girl) and there’s some stunning cinematography and directing here as well. It just tries to do way too much. The music ranged from excellent to gross, and the ending left a sour taste in my mouth. So poorly executed.

A loose collection of vibes, or smears, of idea's about injustice, corruption and, mostly, a propably justified proposition that mexican society is a moral wreck, something that, for an incomprehensible reason, is being told by musical tropes?!? Why not try to make a recipe of pancakes by throwing out cuddly toys out of a driving Jeep? Or, or, make a painting by waiting on a schoolbus at 6:30 in the rain? Or, or, or, create a piece of music by watching two stones hoping for a pizza-delivery?

Maybe it's not right to harp on about inconsistency in a film about the liberating nature of change but this was only intermittently interesting. Like, it only lets loose occasionally, it only KIND OF makes sense, the character motivations are muddled, the messaging is both galvanizing and vague at the same time, and it just gets too dull and conventional in the second half for it to work as a big bold wild contradictory statement. Strong work from the actresses but unsatisfying.

Hailed by some critics as movie of the year and derided by others as a disaster start to finish, and honestly, I get both sides. Originally written as a libretto, by Audiard alone for a change, it has a ridiculous mess of a story and absolutely terrible song numbers. It also boasts awesome directing and a great cast that injects fragility and sensitivity into the otherwise schematic characters. Should be enjoyed as the audacious high-brow trash that it is.

An absolute mess. To start, Audiard admits that he doesn't know much about Mexican culture. Filming was moved from Mexico to a Paris studio. The characters are all stereotypes that flirt with racism or surface level understanding of the trans experience. The songs are awful and without melody. The choreography is uninspired. Zoe Saldana gives it her all, but has to perform tripe. The cinematography is odd, as are lighting and framing choices. I do not understand any praise this is receiving.

Stylish and well performed but im not sure what all the awards hype is over. There's nothing particularly hard hitting or profound about it and the characters and their decisions lack depth

The tone is being pulled in too many directions to stick a landing, but hey, Jacques Audiard took a big ol' rip off the Almodóvar bong and I can't ask for much more from a Saturday night.

So ridiculous it becomes fascinating to watch. At least for a while as it starts to drag (no pun intended) by the second half. Doesn’t really give you a reason to care about anything or anyone but kudos to Audiard, however, for always trying something different.

I didn't know changing sex can transform you from criminal blood thirsty drug dealer to a philanthropist and charity worker. Acting is below average. Story is awful and out of character. Music and dancing sucks.

I don't think it's the disaster that many are making it out to be, but Audiard swung big and missed with this one. While I respect the ambition, the film attempts to pack several important and very socially-charged themes into one film and says nothing relevant or tangible about any of them. The tonal changes within the film are jarring, a lot of the dialogue is laughably bad (even for a musical), and it's hard to get past the director not respecting the subject matter enough to do it justice.

From a technical standpoint Emilia Pérez is middling. The film is decently paced but never really engaging. As a musical, it's fairly lacklustre with one distinct song, repeated use of the musical theme, and too many finger-clicking, whispered sing-talk numbers. The choreography is alright but a bit literal at times. Saldaña delivers the only competent performance. From a narrative perspective, this film is garbage. From the ludicrous premise to the badly written dialogue & songs...nonsense!

You kind of hope for something as divisive culturally as this is building up towards that there would be anything worth grabbing onto. Lacks any forward thinking any sort of audacious filmmaking. Just the work of a dullard. Not worth the storm that has ensued.

Yeah, unbelieveably misguided and just a huge misfire from every possible perspective. Not only thematically self-satisfying and outright phony, but also cinematically trite because Audiard not only doesn't have anything relevant to say or seems remotely interested in trying, but delivers a non-existent style -- something like a flashy realism, one that loves to pose as edgy and actually makes the bad writing even worse. Result is a musical disaster with zero good songs, zero good dancing scenes

It's actually a pretty movie, but aside from the accents thingy, some things aren't meant to be mixed. Musicals and cartels, when done by a foreigner, are such a thing. Don't. Please. Would have worked just as well if the movie happened in any other country with any other criminal organization that doesn't hold as much weight.

The negative stories/reviews of this movie made me avoid it for months. I was wrong. I'm not normally a fan of musicals (and, admittedly, outside of two great numbers, could've seen this as a straight drama). But this film recreates a great cinematic trope: watching criminals try to redeem themselves while their pasts come back to haunt them. I simply fear this one is being mocked because of the trans story line. Still, it has tense sequences, a good romance, and Zoe is amazing. Recommended.

At best this movie is okay. And that's at best. The fact that it got 13 oscar nominations is insane. The majority of the songs are bad, and all are un-memorable. The plot is only midly interesting at best, though not great. It shouldn't have even been a musical tbh. Mostly unforgetable, if not for the small shock factor of how bad/abrupt some songs are. Not to mention the shallow portrayals of both the trans and mexican communities.

It's... So, so bad. And boring. And sloppily made; felt like almost nobody was even trying. It doesn't deserve any of the buzz it has, good or bad; it just deserves to be forgotten like every other mediocre piece of crap. (Could've written this in Spanish but... No).

What really boggles the mind is that there's no shred of sarcasm or irony in a movie so obviously intent on insulting, among many things, intelligence, conventional movie genres, general common sense, and even whole cultures. The emilia perez virgin statue at the end could have been an outrageously funny bit, but the whole movie plays as if it wanted to be fun and profound in all the wrong ways. Girl, you're your own worst enemy.

Senora Doubtfuego is a film that's so audacious that I have to applaud it. But other than that, the film is kind of a mess. How does it feel about its protagonist? Does it have anything to say about being trans, or that nothing more than a plot device? Are the songs supposed to be good or memorable? Does anybody other than MAGA really think this poorly of Mexico?

Considering the numerous nominations of this movie and the backlash from people, I stand with people. The character being a transgender woman had no value to the story. Sadly, like in most movies, they're being portrayed by people outside of their community just to say they understand them, but they don't. Here the concept of trans people was just a tool to tell a story and exploit possibilities a sis person fantasized with. Saldana's acting was the only good thing about the movie.

I had been led to expect bad things but WOW, that was SO much worse than I could have imagined. A movie about transness and the Mexican drug war with an insultingly shallow depiction of both. A musical where every song sucks, is staged terribly, and feels like an afterthought. An attempt at visual stylisation that feels half-baked and inconsistent, just grabbing for whatever gimmicky shot is closest. It’s just so, so bad. Cant wait for it to win Best Picture.

Before learning partway through that the director of this simply hates Mexico, I thought his caricaturized land of violence was the set up for a metaphor about how living the wrong life is like committing heinous crimes ... but then the movie didn't include a trans narrative after all: our protagonist is just an underwritten villain. Saldaña does what she can, and the first few musical numbers are uniquely interesting, but ultimately this is a pretty boring and ill-conceived film.

Chronically bad. So bad that writing a meaningful review is impossible. I should still try it in some sentences. First, the scenario has no layers, just the transitions (no joke) from one event to another. Aesthetically, everything appears to have been done with an advertising mindset. There is no care for the characters’ lives, experiences, or behaviors. Songs are boring; they bring no real value for our understanding of the story. Also, isn’t the representation quite transphobic?

I didn't know anything about the story of this going in, so I was surprised by the audacious concept of this film that seems to tastefully meld two big button issues today. Then the 'penis 2 vagina' song played and I was even more surprised that this was going to be the film's tone (or at least one of many tones). Most of the songs themselves aren't great, though some of the dance routines, especially coming from Saldana, are a blast to watch.

Audiard attempts a tamped-down version of Almodovar here; I’m not sure many of the bloody minded, overly literal takes of the plot are fair - this is a blatantly overwrought fantasy; while it’s lack of exploration of some plot threads may be a double-edged sword in terms of its resonance, Audiard’s ultimate goal seems to be to present a perplexing and beguiling mix of tone and characterisation. Saldana is the highlight of the cast, both as singer and dependable anchor to the madness around her.

So, the film takes big swings and misses almost every time, which is pretty remarkable. I appreciate the willingness to take said risks, but, besides some interesting camera work during some musical sequences, it's all quite flat. Zoe Saldaña's performance is mostly good, but the movie's true star is Karla Sofía Gascón.
