At first I was a bit annoyed at how dumb it was and how kinda cheap it looked, but because of all the characters saying out loud what they were thinking and the makers' fervent desire to ensure we understand everything on screen as if we were simpleminded people, I started to imagine this as a few sequential episodes of an epic but corny Mexican soap series in its, I dunno, eighteenth season. After that, the viewing experience became pretty amazing.

An enormous fucking mess with a convoluted plot and an absurd number of characters, but if you let yourself get caught up in the orgy of gunplay and Mexploitation style, it's an entertaining mess. Johnny Depp quite clearly steals the show, creating an anti-hero that easily overshadows the protagonist.

Convoluted yet brilliant. Bad ass moment galore, seriously there is just that much bad ass in this film. Well filmed showdowns that make you want more and you constantly receive. Loved it from start to finish.

oozes rodriguez's signature style in the best way possible from start to finish. not as to-the-point action as desperado, but still tons and tons of fun. downside is that by the end of the movie i realized i'd be bounced around from character to character the whole time and wish i could have spent some more time with banderas, although depp certainly stole the show.

Very confusing and mostly boring. The action sequences are great, but too few and far between. Johnny Depp is great, as usual.

Confusing and, in the end, fairly unbalanced conclusion to the series, but there's some fun to be had. Johnny Depp is a highlight.

I don't know why I decided to watch this, I guess I just need to watch predictably bad movies now and then. I haven't even seen its prequels in the trilogy. Like his pal Tarantino (but with less talent), Rodriguez has that personality of the deep-down geek yearning to be "cool", and that is the value-scale that drives his work. Sadly, even fashioning the title after a Leone movie does not make him another Leone, but the attempt is touching.

Very messy, but entertaining nevertheless. As always, defoe and depp add to the movie more thna they are supposed to. I really dig the juno reactor score in the middle too.

First-rate action in a who-cares storyline, but a great performance from Johnny Depp.

Good, but it might be better. Desperado was better. But Johnny Depp was very good here, as villian.

A mess. If it wasn't for the always amazing Johnny Depp, this would have an even lower rating.

Well, my relationship to this movie is best described as some kind of Love-Hate. I love to hate it, but somehow I have a softspot for this one.

Best bit for me is to look out for the different t-shirts Depp wears. Stylishly done.

One of the first times in my life I watched a movie and thought it got a little too Hollywoodized. I preferred Desperado and El Mariachi more for their more Indie like feel. As exciting as it was to reach that stage in my film criticism ability I would have rather enjoyed the movie more.

A director's movie. A very boring director's movie. The director thought it was a very stylish movie.

Shot terribly, plenty of bad scenery chewing where it's supposed to be fun, too much wacky Depp, and in general a muddled plot and some not-as-intense action. Bluh.

Once Upon a Time in Mexico is a harmlessly enjoyable but completely ridiculous sequel to 'Desperado'. It's hard to label this series of films as a trilogy when plot wise they lack little sense, progression or continuity. But as a standalone film this is worth a watch once for the absurd action and set pieces. Antonio Banderas is fun once again. As is the addition of Johnny Depp. This is typical Robert Rodriguez mayhem and three films in people should know what to expect from these films by now.

Yiannos | 48 19th |
For the last and final installment of his 'Mexican trilogy', Rodriguez makes the fatal mistake of sidelining his mythical mariachi character in favour of Depp's eccentric CIA agent, Sheldon Sands. Depp is entertaining in the role, but he seems out of place in that milieu, and there are just too many characters and subplots crammed into its relatively brief running time. The overly convoluted plot works against the fun, and the action scenes are less thrilling than usual.
