Overall it was quite average; it didn't have any tremendously spectacular moments, but didn't suffer from any serious pitfalls either. Boo to all the naysayers, the ending was excellent.

Brooding "ghost story" horror film starts well, with Hudson a likable lead, and Rowlands and Hurt excellent as a pair of forbidding, unsettling gargoyles; the tension starts to dissipate once the story twists start, which stretch incredulity beyond breaking point, and ultimately the suspense as well, leading to a finale that pretty much goes full shaggy dog, negating the rest of the film. A shame, because Softley sets up the pieces well, with the creaky old house itself a fine horror set piece.

While it doesn't offer many scares to the more seasoned horror fans, the setting is intriguing and the mystery is surprisingly well-crafted. It manages to avoid many pitfalls that horror films these days seem to succumb to, such as dumb slapped-on twists that come totally out of nowhere and serve no purpose other than to make the viewer feel cheated. Here, all the pieces click together in a satisfying way. A very pleasant surprise.

Far better than it's reputed to be. Rowlands, Hurt, and Sarsgaard are all outstanding actors and really help make this film work. What it does is play a game with the audience about the authenticity of one the core story mechanics. But while you're busy wondering just how much audacity the film has, it's busy raising the stakes again and again. It's not great, and may be outright weak in subsequent viewings, but it's fun. I loved the ending.

This is how conspiracy theorists are born. For some, their belief in the wacko is so strong it comes to define who they are as a person. Here, the theory of the day is fueled by white guilt, or rather the conviction that the people you've oppressed are bound to get their revenge. It's a clumsy movie for sure, and takes a lot of time to get going, but it's still quite enjoyable.

Great plot twists and good hints on them on they way there. These kinds of thriller-horrors are rare these days. You don't always need the computer animated monsters or little chinese girls to feel spooked! I loved the idea of "it's not real unless you believe it". That's the way I think ghost and magic really exists..

This was an interesting mystery/thriller that deals with things like hoodoo, a topic I don't see very often in movies. Kate Hudson does alright, but I actually thought John Hurt killed it in the role, especially because he physically doesn't do much. He's in bed the whole movie, and barely says a word - he just has to emote SO MUCH thoughout the film and he does that really, really well.
