[watched s1] Because structurally they played the first half-or-so of the season very straight in order to make the sharp left turns later on, it was overall pretty terrible for the entire set-up, before getting way better. The finale was promising though, so I'll probably watch the second season. Imagine actually thinking the capitalist charity apparatus is Good though... [edit: watched s2 and found it more substantial than the merely expository earlier parts].

One of the best television series ever made in my opinion. It may not have been on for very long, but it was sure great while it lasted. It had a story to tell, and it told the story. It went out on it's own terms, and it went out very well.

Definitely not a top-tier sitcom, but it's not a bad binge watch if you are in between something. It's a bit light on gutbusters but so far is consistently chuckle-worthy. EDIT - the show really picks up creatively going into the second season. Well worth a watch.

the disney channel tone/mugging with added fart and boner jokes gave me violent flashbacks to my tween sibling having control of the remote, but this show advocates so thoroughly against the status quo I'm always complaining about and never let me down. it even manages to elegantly take the fantasy hypothetical of an afterlife and argue for changes we should make here and now, what we should accept in life and what we shouldn't. I'll hold a little piece of it with me until I find my ocean

I thought the first two seasons were pretty much perfect. The last two were a bit more meandering and uneven, but with the occasional very good and/or funny moment. I am amazed they kept such a weird show on network television for four years.

It's possibly the best show to have ever pondered about life, the human condition, and morality & ethics, while also being a supremely funny comedy, with a tight, quickly-moving story and a few genuinely surprising plot twists along the way. It's both intellectually and emotionally engaging, while also being goofy and wholesome and optimistic. It's all of the best things I expect from a sitcom, and trust me, you won't regret it when you binge the entire thing in two days.

Can feel a bit twee and cutesy and insular at points, but I also have respect for how tightly plotted and serialized it is for a sitcom, with cliffhangers and twists, etc. A few interesting experimental episodes too.

The majority of the world would choose this show's 'bad place' over their present existence. And the ethics lessons would be less of a chore for the viewer if they were delivered through the story and action rather than a literal lesson. And the repetition of phrases such as 'earned confidence' get a little boring. But still an entertaining comedy that I laugh at at least once an episode — a level that surprisingly few sitcoms achieve! — Goes downhill with each series.

Season 1 - 88; Season 2 - 97; Season 3 - 95; Season 4 - 96. This is my favorite sitcom of all time. I might be too deep into the fandom to see it objectively, but as the podcast says, it's the smartest dumbest show on television. Mike Schur and the writers' room made choices here that are some of the gutsiest in recent television, and they taught us something along the way about (of all the things) moral philosophy.

Season 1 is a 90/100, drifts down to 50/60 toward end of S3 and in S4 -- becomes procedural. In early seasons, almost every episode develops characters well and has a game-changing twist near its end. Later, the characters mostly don't develop further (except by deus ex machina) and instead mostly become caricatures of themselves. The twists also fall off, and stop being things that I felt attached to.

I have happily rewatched the entire series. Some of my favorite shows/movies are those that examine "what does it mean to be a good person?" and the Good Place does exactly that. It's not laugh out loud funny most times, but it is entertaining and surprisingly educational with satisfying and meaningful character arcs. I really commend it on its ability to package big ideas in an accessible format for a general audience.

I don't like watching shows where it is painfully apparent that everyone is acting if that makes sense. While the plot is interesting and the ending ties everything together beautifully, I couldn't properly emerge myself into the story because a lot of the jokes felt lazy and shoved into the script just for the sake of it. Many of the jokes made are painfully predictable ("he's right behind me... isn't he") and the acting is reminiscent of school assembly skits and Disney shows.

Very solid sitcom. The characters are really lovable, sometimes it reads a bit like Phil 1 but otherwise, it's very enjoyable. Unlike many sitcoms this one is plot-driven so it's easy to binge-watch.

The GP kicks off with a reviting 1st season that introduces fun characters, delivers lots of laughs and includes smart twists and turns.Season 2 continues with more of the same goodness but with even more clever scenarios and ideas.Season 3 has its dull moments(specifically the parts on earth get kinda predictable and repetitive)but finishes strong.Season 4 starts off slow but it builds up to a very satisfying and emotional conclusion, serving justice to the characters that it developed so well.

great premise, and they get a ton of mileage out of it despite (because of?) completely changing angles every few eps. pretty ingenious in places, the trolley problem bit had the philosophy grad in me fucking rolling. anything that reignites my love for bell is going into my good place, and there's sterling work from danson, harper and carden too. i just wish it was funnier and tahani and fucking JASON would get "retired" on the surface of a hot sun so i never suffer their presence ever again.

85 because of the actors, including Ted Danson who is great in this. I knew immediately it wasn't "The Good Place" because of the cursing and the frozen yogurt. Limit expression? Frozen yogurt? No. Also I loved the joke: "Well, I mean, it's not really accurate, and we consider it to be a little racist." The problem is that after this joke they go with the demon portrayal thing, rather than the hapless custodians of a meaningless existence thing, which was better.

This is one of the highest works of television as an art form, and it came out as a *network sitcom*. Incredible. Its pacing is sharp as a tack, and its twists are never cheap yet always pushing the plot forward. The acting is superb, portraying characters that combine broad comedy sketches with intense three- (or possibly four-) dimensionality. But the things that shine brighest are the ethics and the genuine spirituality. This show made me kinder and healthier. Plus it's really fucking funny.

I think the first season is brilliant, and the second season comes pretty close to that level as well, but I think the show had a little trouble figuring out what to do in its later seasons. That being said, I do think they did end up wrapping things up in a satisfying way by the end of it all.

It has a great concept and a talented cast. The show is constantly upping the ante and reinventing itself. Most sitcoms (by their nature) are unwilling/unable to change, but The Good Place spits in the face of the genre's most stifling conventions to excellent effect.

Started good. Became way too self indulgent. Caught itself in a corner many times with the writing. The characters were nice but - contrary to what they tried to show us - never grow up or learn anything. I'll have a few fond memories of the show, but also remember how it felt like a chore watching towards the end.

It was pretty obvious all along that the writers had no idea what to do with this show past Season 1. But still, after its quite touching finale, I can at least say that I cared for these characters' journey...

A refreshingly creative show, discussing philosophical topic in surprising depth. The first season is amazing, but the show runs out of steam (and ideas) by the end of the second season. The writers refrain from injecting their personal politics into the show up until the third season or so, at which point the writing gets significantly worse. In summary: Fantastic first season, good second season, the rest is essentially skipable.

Funny, intelligent, sweet and absurd sitcom about the afterlife and what it means to be a "good" person. It throws ethical and philosophical questions as well as unexpected plot lines at you and keeps coming up with new ideas left and right. But it never forgets the heart of the show - the characters, their journeys and the relationships they form. Don't read too much about it before going in, as not to spoil your enjoyment of it and just give the first few episodes a try!

[Complete] The best part is certainly S1 and part of S2 (this would be 80ish grade), declining a bit in originality and interest after that, specially S3 and recovering a bit in S4 (70ish), though getting fond of the characters helps following the series and it still has some very nice moments). Good hearted comedy that includes interesting food for thought about life and ethics, good characters and most of the time a very nice taste for absurd humour (not perfect anyway).

Really hits above its weight in delivering a quirky sitcom. First season is really strong and it just gets better. It's sometimes a little too "oh look how clever we are", but it never gets in the way of delivering a constant stream of great humour. It also manages the rare trick of turning utterly horrible characters into people you care about. And Bad Janet boosted the score by 10 points alone.

A sitcom where the plot is actually the best part. It's not often hilarious, but it is consistently funny. Basically, it has a nice steady stream of jokes.
