Matthew McCougnaughey and Woody Harrelson are equally fantastic in season 1. Their relationship, rather than a so-so mystery plot, is what makes this one of the very best seasons in years.

And you know what? The immature poser Issa Lopez already signed for S5. Please euthanize me

First Season: Overrated... typically. It's just like they stretched a 2 hour long movie into a series: 8 hours. Extremely ineffective. And the final episode can't pay off. Won't ever waste my time by watching second season.

Even taking the generally lesser well received second season into account - which is only 'bad' when unfairly compared to the first season - this show is set to be one of television's all time greats. The writing, cinematography, direction, performances and just about anything else you care to name has been handled by people who are obviously very skilled and compassionate about their craft. Hope there's more of these to come, but only if they're done with the same amount of high standards.

What Suture Self said. Its highs are glorious but short-lived, and the impression that lingers is one of immense disappointment. This could have been really special and, to be fair, it is for a while. What a shame it doesn't last. And that is a terrible and secret fate of all TV shows that aren't Deadwood and The Wire.

MAKE A SEPARATE WEBSITE FOR TV, OR MINIMALLY BREAK THE SHOW DOWN BY INDIVIDUAL SEASONS - Seriously. If any one show needs their seasons ranked separately it is True Detective. S1 (85/100) was never a masterpiece, but Mcconaughey's eccentric portrayal of Rust alone almost pushes it into that category. The yellow king's mysteriousness was enticing, whereas in S2 (60/100) I felt smothered by it. Despite that it still had this magnetic quality that kept me captivated, yet ultimately disappointed.

The first season was amazingly layered and well acted. The second season is still better than most TV, but feels like a let down despite its over the top machismo and increased action. Season 3 is back on par and feel with season 1.

True Detective doesn't work as an anthology series because it began so weirdly specific in tone. The tone was entirely founded in the locations and culture of backwoods Louisiana, and trying to replicate the same thing in Los Angeles turns the show into pure comedy. I don't have high hopes for the future, unless it's willing to shake its comical, over-the-top brooding and "darkness."

Very good, but at times, perhaps especially towards the latter parts (of the first season, which is all I've seen), I started to think it was drifting a little bit in the direction of kitsch, in terms of writing, directing and performance.

A gritty detective series with tons of intrigue. It was quite entertaining with Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey as the lead detectives and the beautiful Michelle Monaghan as Woody's wife. While the story was almost entirely engaging, there were several moments of insane rambling from a nearly incoherent McConaughey. The story and dialogs remained interesting and the plot unpredictable. Female nudity was also pretty great. Exciting and a bit addicting. Worthwhile

96% for 1st season (tho plot is definitely secondary to superb acting, tone & evolution of relationships over time) | 78% for 2nd season. As the seasons are stand-alone stories the 2nd season can be avoided if you wish but I don't think it deserved negativity it was greeted with. If it had been broadcast 1st not 2nd I think it would be pretty highly regarded. Simply Season 1 was so good that Season 2 felt disappointing in comparison.

Nice jet black detective story. The actual plot underwhelmed me by the end since despite the heavy buildup, the villains end up feeling a bit cartoony & superficial. As a result, the engaging character drama also felt a bit detached from the story & the philosophising kinda tacked on. Nicely covers for all this with delicious southern gothic atmosphere, great acting & T Bone Burnett's exquisite music taste. Aint no Millennium trilogy though.

Speaking for the 1st season, it was one the best TV shows I've ever seen. So deep and thoughtfull, it really made you focus 110%. Hitting the 2nd season, it was such a drop of quality most people stopped watching. I enjoyed even though it can't be compared with the 1st since it's miles behind.

It is enjoyable and captivating, even with the slow, slow pacing. - In series 1, many of great moments were had in the first two episodes, and then the momentum decreased massively; for the sake of reverse introduction. - Series 2 is linear, with good protagonists; also with lots of filler; it was probably a bad idea to make it less mysterious. - Series 3 is pretty good, jumping between timelines, but loses intensity later; seems like purposefully evading gritty moments.

The 97 is merely for season one which is one of the finest "Mini Series" I have ever watched. I won't let season 2 bring down the score because that would hugely unfair to the amazing production that was season one. Harrelson and McConaughey were both amazing their characters the driving force of the narrative. It put all the right elements of the psychological thrillers in all the right places.

This started so well! Beautiful, stylish. Not too obvious. It was cool, characters were a bit mysterious. Forget the murder, we have real breathing people, and Matthew McConaughey was simply amazing. Second half went downhill for me, as we got to know all the characters, the series got story-driven and it was kind of predictable. The ending was a bit anti-climactic. I was told the second series was not as good, so I stopped after S1.

I'll be honest - season 1 was definitely good, worthy of being called one of the ten best shows of 2014, but I was never in the "MASTERPIECE!!" camp even then. The ending was just too neat and pat for that. Then, as we all know, season 2 was very, very messy. Lots of Vince Vaughn talking to random people and me being like "Huh?" All that said, McConaughey definitely created an iconic TV character in Rust Cohle. Alexandra Daddario's nude scene is also worth some extra points all by itself.

Score is based off S1. The last couple of episodes are disappointing, the discovery & resolution of the villain is far too abrupt and "conventional" for lack of a better term. Honorable mention to Alexandra Daddario's god-tier boobs and the intro which is the best show intro of all time (check out https://youtu.be/DQl86XDsQFo). S3 is about 70ish, carried on the backs of Ali & Dorff. The finale is far worse than the first season. S2 I've skipped until I run out of other content which is never.

This Review is only for the 1st Season of True Detective featuring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson. It is one of the single most perfect seasons of a tv series I have ever seen. The drama and thrill while going back and forth between past and present is fantastically done, and I believe both McConaughey and Harrelson put on their strongest performances. The acting is fantastic, the music and underscore is supreme, and the camerawork is outstanding. There are absolutely no gripes 10/10.

Referring only to the first season, the chemistry between McConaughey and Harrelson is mind-blowing, character build-up among the best I've seen in a TV series. It has both the courage and endurance to deal with philosophical pessimism in persona of weary-of-life detective Rust Cohle, making him one of the most profound characters of the decade. A masterpiece of character-writing met by a superb display of craftsmanship by McConaughey.

Season 2 - crap! duller than the 5th season of Fargo, had to abort it after 3 episodes Season 4 - acceptable! Jodie Foster lacks a lot of charisma, but the plot is quite o.k.! S3 (score: ~39, but really hopeless to rate per the following explanation): Not just a refined meditation on social memory, but a sedulous meta-engagement with the viewership (us noided pizzagaters, et al.), which rug-pulls and crosses all lines into outright audience derision only in the concluding ep. S1 (score: 59): def. corny, but undeniable and effortless. S2 (score: 75): formidable performances (esp. a widely-mocked but brilliant one by Vaughn), studied, devastating; a real masterpiece.

S1 only: An okay, but definitely overrated series. Acting is quite good, but not completely natural. The writing is generally just interesting enough but also has a very high smugness factor, it's a lot less clever and deep than it thinks it is. The drama bits, especially with the wife and the affairs were offensively bad and boring. The murder mystery is okay, but it feels like a lot of side questing with random stuff, while imitating other series/films. Poor cop out ending. Overrated.

If it wasn't for the third season, which granted isn't bad but just doesn't live up to the hype, this could've been the best show to grace television in a very long time. True Detective - Season 1
Season 1 - In 1995, Detectives Marty Hart and Rust Cohle, partners in Louisiana’s Criminal Investigation Division, are assigned to a macabre murder by a killer with disturbing occult leanings. As they attempt to uncover the secrets of this bizarre crime, their own lives collide and entwine in unexpected, sometimes catastrophic ways. In 2012, when a similar case leads to an investigation of the original ‘95 murder by two new detectives, Marty and Rust separately tell the story of the investigation, their lives, and how they’ve affected each other as detectives, friends, and men. (HBO)
True Detective - Season 2
Season 2 - A highway patrol motorcycle officer stumbles upon the scene of a bizarre murder, in which the victim’s body has been ritually mutilated. The crime triggers an investigation that brings together three law enforcement officers from different cities, each with troubled pasts, and a thug-turned-entrepreneur in danger of losing his empire. As the case grows broader and darker — revealing multiple criminal collusions involving billions of dollars — it forces the participants to face their own inner demons in order to solve the crime, all the while navigating a web of conspiracy and betrayal in the scorched landscapes of California. (HBO)
True Detective - Season 3
Season 3 - Wayne Hays is a retired detective who’s been tormented for 35 years by a case involving the 1980 disappearance of two children in West Finger, Arkansas. As the aging Hays ruminates on the investigation with the producer of a true-crime documentary, details are revealed about the case and Hays’ haunted past. (HBO)
True Detective - Season 4
Season 4 - When the long winter night falls in Ennis, Alaska, the eight men who operate the Tsalal Arctic Research Station vanish without a trace. To solve the case, Detectives Liz Danvers and Evangeline Navarro will have to confront the darkness they carry in themselves and dig into the haunted truths that lie buried under the eternal ice.
