The latest battle in the eternal war between Good and Evil has come to New Jersey in the late, late 20th Century. Yet another film I liked more the second time. Had some great writing. The "shit demon" scene brings it down a bit and Fiorentino could of done better. However Rickman, Affleck and Damon were all great. Jay and Silent Bob were funny as usual. Some minor let downs but a great movie none-the-less.

It's so clever that you really have to applaud it for it's brutal honesty about religion. You don't have to agree with the movie, because really that's all it is. It's just a religion movie with scatalogical humor.

A Comedy Central after-school jam. I only wish it stayed on target a little more instead of throwing to sex jokes every time it gets embarrassed of being thoughtful. Ben Affleck is weirdly good in this.

Kevin Smith at his best. This controversial comedy is a brutally honest look at religion. It's got Smith's flare for pop culture, and his clever dialogue is snappy and hilarious. It's not a serious film, but you can still watch it and talk about it like it is. If you have a thing against making fun of a religion a little, well... don't see it, or quit being a baby and see it anyway. Really good!

WARNING: You must be comfortable with your feelings on religion to be able to enjy this movie. That being said, this is my second favorite Kevin Smith film, right behind Clerks. Damon and Affleck are fantastic. Fiorentino's work is very good as the very confused Last Scion. My only real complaint with the movie is the prominance of Jay and Silent Bob (even though they are crucial to the plot). Even the casting of Alanis Morrisette is clever. Favorite Silent Bob line, "No tickets." - c

Blergh. We all know that religions are ridiculously easy to make fun of, so why the hell can't Kevin Smith manage to make this movie funny or interesting? Alan Rickman is the only reason that this gets a D.

Kevin Smith attempts to make an educational, yet funny film about Catholicism and fails in both departments. The humour and the knowledge of religion are completely separated, meaning that scenes are either boring or unfunny. Smith is able to show in this film only a sense of the talented writer-director that he has proven in the Clerks films, but here it comes off as wonky and lazy; this can especially be noticed in the underwhelming fight/action sequences.

Maybe not quite as great as I remember, but still an impressive achievement from Smith. Other than the occasionally slow pacing and having too much Jay and Silent Bob it's a film that meshes storytelling, dialogue and world crafting into varied and highly effective comedy. It's also a reminder that yes, Smith was a capable director at one point.

Arguably Smith's most ambitious effort to date in the irreverent fun he is having with theological concepts and contradictions is a fascinating if overstuffed exercise; while he can't quite reconcile his penchant for freewheeling dialogue against the "seriousness" of his subject matter, the film still works as a cheerful piece of entertainment, with a game cast (highlighted by Affleck and Damon's double-act) bringing a life and energy whenever the philosophical digressions threaten to overwhelm.

Wishy washy religious nonsense by Kevin Smith. He tries to mix in comedy with religious musing over morality, sex, and a bunch of other supposedly deep stuff that most people have mulled over in elementary school. The entire thing is a suburban man's insecurities over a Catholic upbringing and the film is about as interesting as hearing your catholic, jewish, or muslim friend in real life moaning about how repressed they were growing up. Not all that great.

Kevin Smith shows how he's grown as a director and screenwriter, but he's still Kevin Smith, and Kevin Smith makes movies for Kevin Smith first and foremost. In this case, Smith questions his Catholic faith, if only superficially; the movie doesn't ask any questions that can't be answered via, well, dogma.

There are plenty of highs and interesting points in this film. For instance, is it morally permissible for a Christian to allow a brain dead person (living only by virtue of life support) to die if keeping him alive means the end all existence? There are a number of weak points too, but it's excellent overall. See it for the airport, Mooby, and "Catholicism, WOW!" scenes if nothing else.

Going in expecting religious satire is a great mistake, one which is immediately revealed as the totally transparent attempt to pass juvenile humour by tacking it on to religion becomes apparent. Despite the interesting premise Dogma undermines itself at every turn, eventually leading it into a total cinematic limbo, only accompanied by the dull finale and a demon made of excrement. Ironically, the latter actually manages to briefly raise the tone of the movie. A completely trivial experience.

Stands out as by far my best Kevin Smith experience. It's all round pretty entertaining and has some frolicky theological fun throughout. If like me you grew up surrounded by Catholicism, it will possibly carry a little bit of extra punch. As always Smiths actual film making abilities are uneven and unpredictable, with some moments I enjoy and some moments that make me cringe! But taken simply as one mans opinion on religion, then there's plenty enough here to enjoy.

Top badass moment? Bethany saves all of existence. Not quite as impressive as my dealing with the trauma of having a wisdom tooth removed yesterday, but it's still pretty badass. 1 decapitation, no cats or chainsaws. (Well it's an exploding head really, but let's not quarrel over semantics.) I think there's also at least one headless body too, but technically that's not a decapitation; well okay it is, but it's not what we're looking for here exactly as we don't get to see it happen, although...

Dogma is a funny film, which manages to tell an interesting story with relatable characters. It wasn't offensive enough for there to be a warning message at the beginning, but it did manage to walk a fine line regarding the topic of religion. The two Angels end up giving the audience the most fun, although there are laughs to be had at the expense of the two stoner prophets that get met along the way. Dogma is a good comedy, one that has, in a sense, restored my faith in the genre.
