LOATHESOME in its blatantly manipulative sentimentality w/ more unpredictability 2 b found in 2morrow's sunrise. Some foul language& sex talk don't hide the Family Channel treacle on display here. Not unlike watching a soccer mom pontificate on the importance of children. It does have the most egregiously false moment in cinema when Will Smith cameos as himself & laments how he is unable to spend as much time as he'd like w/ his kids. I guess his millions force him to keep working so much?

I don't know what Kevin Smith was thinking. Did the world really need another version of the "3 Men and a Baby / Curly Sue / Definitely Maybe" single dad story? This rehash brings absolutely nothing new to the formula and Ben Affleck probes new levels of dullness. As usual, the kid is the best part, though this isn't saying much. I cannot believe this movie was greenlit, it's completely devoid of creativity, wit or talent.

On the surface it's pretty crappy, but I took a girl to it senior year of high school on a first date and got laid after, and I was an overweight nerd at that point, so it has some kind of magic power none of us can truly comprehend.

Jersey Girl works best when it's not trying to force us into a state of mind. But with each passing scene, you'll be able to tell early on whether the film wants you to laugh or cry, and none of that really works. The film isn't funny -- perhaps the PG-13 restraint cut into Smith's natural sense of humor -- and its drama fails at every turn. It has some good actors, with Raquel Castro really making an impression, but it is ultimately a failure because you can't believe in anything that it does.

Jersey Girl is a cute love story about a man who had everything he wanted, loses it all, and fights to get it back. The catch is that he doesn't see that he already has a great life. The cast in this movie is just out of this world. George Carlin makes his final appearance in this movie which is as bittersweet as Raul Julia's final performance. It seems like everybody ends up making an appearance in this movie, but that didn't save it from just being pretty mediocre.

Wonderfully warm and measured film is amongst Smith's most approachable and conventional; he constructs a genuinely touching and moving film, while leaning in to predictable moments that payoff in unexpected ways (especially Affleck’s encounter with the Fresh Prince himself). Perfectly cast all round, with Carlin especially shining in a largely dramatic performance, though held together by the wounded performances of Affleck and Castro (who stops just this side of annoyingly precocious).

While it's definitely not the best of Kevin Smith, the critics tend to rate this a bit too harshly. I had a pretty good time with its cast and its story. Parts become very reminiscent of Little Miss Sunshine. While its cliched and a bit dumbed down for Kevin Smith, its still got value and its worth a watch. Pretty good Rom-com.

Ollie (Ben Affleck) has successful career as a publicist for pop stars and a beautiful wife (Jennifer Lopez). When she dies in childbirth, he is shattered. He turns the baby over to his father (George Carlin) and throws himself into his work. Ollie falters at first but then discovers how much he loves that baby. He loses his big fancy job. Seven years later, she has grown up into an adorable movie, and he is just about ready to begin to notice the very pretty girl (Liv Tyler) at the video store.

The attempts at a joke are mostly bad and the story is quite cliched but it has a big warm heart and Smith excels at dialogue as usual. Affleck and Carlin deliver very solid performances.

(Watched in 2013): Smith toned down the vulgarity and tried to merge his style with a family friendly film and the results were less than pleasing. It often plays like an after school special with the occasional f-bomb, and even the great Zsigmond can't elevate it much beyond standard TV fare. Affleck and Tyler aren't bad, Carlin is solid, and the kid is adorable, but the film just piles on the cliches to manipulate an outcome that could have easily been achieved more organically.

IF YOU DON'T LIKE THIS MOVIE THEN YOU DON'T HAVE A SOUL. Maybe that's not quite fair, but damn, this film is polarizing. Jersey Girl tries to be more romantic than comedy, and I would argue that it's successful. Many people disagree. I really don't understand where all of the hate comes from, though. My own theory is that people who hate Kevin Smith already hate Kevin Smith, and people who love Kevin Smith are slightly too jaded for this kind of storytelling. Just a thought.

Said it before, I'll say it again -- people either love Kevin Smith or crucify his every move. I was iffy on Jersey Girl when I listened to other people's jaded opinions. After I watched it, I understood where they came from, BUT, no offense, stick it up your ass. Smith is a great storyteller, people knock him for telling and not showing, but this whole flick was one big show. Solid.

Not as bad as a lot of people say, and I think it suffered more from Beniffer/Gigli backlash than it's actual merits as a movie (and JLo is hardly in the movie so that's crap). It's nothing amazing, but I don't really think it deserves the raspberries it's received. The stand outs are Affleck and Carlin who do a nice job in their roles, and the script itself is heartwarming with a few moments that elevate it (Sweeney Todd scene, Affleck running into Smith). Give it a try if you like Kevin Smith.

Overlooked Capraesque experiment developed in the shape of a romcom -- Affleck loses wife, job, hip music publicist life in NY, goes back to Jersey, raises his girl, meets Liv Tyler in a video store. It's a naive structure subvertion -- in the classic run-for-your-girl finale, he goes for his daughter --, but a confident one. This is so self-consciously attractive that Will trashes I, Robot, Weinstein pics are all over the video store and the last time Affleck got laid was seven years ago.

Pretty terrible because it seems like Kevin Smith was trying to cash in on sentimentality as well as the whole Affleck/J-lo affair that dominated tabloid news in the U.S. for half a decade. Smith just isn't a convincing writer for serious themed films. This pretty much fails in every way imaginable.

You've got to appreciate that he's trying to make something outside his universe, but this movie stumbles over itself too often to be considered all that great.
