It just really needed to be tightened up. O'Connell is going to make a name for himself, so I don't fault him with anything here. It just kinda goes on and on. At some point you stop being like, "oh those bastards, this is disgusting" and you start going, "whatever." There were moments of real emotion, but then the momentum goes and it slows down too much. A slow movie is fine but there's gotta be something there to grip you and sometimes Unbroken forgot that. Still decent, great story.

I watched this not knowing it was a biopic and spent two thirds of the runtime wondering when the fuck any sort of plot was going to resolve itself out of this mess. A bunch of terrible stuff happens to a guy and he survives, the end. It's not totally awful, but the direction makes everything feel really flat and artificial, and most of the dialog was astonishingly cliche...I was appalled to discover the Coen brothers wrote this nonsense. Also, Jack O'Connell is kinda shite in the lead role.

It's enjoyable, but it's literally the exact same film as the Korean WWII epic My Way, which is far superior in every way and was all I could think about throughout this. O'Connell is going places.

Bad. Hits all the worn out and overly familiar low/high points of any entry into the Misery Porn genre. After all Zamperini has been through in this life: the horror of war, post-traumatic stress disorder, being physically and psychologically tortured by Jessica Biel's androgynous Asian love child...what ended up killing him was attempting to watch a rough cut of this movie. Good job Angie.

The story of how Louis Zamperini (Jack O'Connell) went from delinquent to Olympic runner to POW, and how he bore his considerable hardships along the way. Angelina Jolie stages some impressive sequences; the opening battle, the grueling life-raft voyage, the bombing of Tokyo as seen from a POW camp. But the script (the product of four talented but disparate writers) never really tells the story of the man, merely the story of what happened to him. Acting and production values expectedly solid.

It's kinda impressive that this managed to simultaneously be a laughably generic survival movie (MAN EATING SHARKS!!!) and a laughably generic war movie (ALL JAPANESE ARE EVIL!!!)

While competently shot, this is an unrelentingly grim and sombre film which takes itself incredibly seriously, and is much the worse for it. A great detail of effort clearly went into period costumes, period equipment, period settings. And the underlying tale is the kind other directors might have turned into Oscar bait. But the way this story is told is just so downbeat, so monotonous, without any ray of light or humour or humanity - it's a trial. Watch 10 minutes and skip to the credits.

Jack O'Connell was a satisfying lead with convincing performance throughout. Angelina Jolie did good as director. The true story is worth being told, despite the many hardships & sadistic Japanese. I liked the parts interleaved with scenes from home, the crash landings & the shark battle. The ending became a long slog with too few diversions from the distress & suffering in the POW camp.

A great story, absolutely, but it isn't told here. Instead, there is simply event after event without characterization and without a proper editing crew.

This wasn't a bad film at all - it was emotionally gripping and tense. But a lot of things could have been more developed. The idea of mixing his past experiences into the present was a great touch, but it only happened twice. I would have loved to see more through his childhood and how it affected his current situation. As others have said, once he gets to the POW camp it drags on, facing the same challenges over and over. But I guess it really was like that, being a true story. But as a movie?

It's a pretty punishing and depressing story, but I found it sufficiently interesting. It's told in a matter-of-fact manner, but that didn't really bother me. Angelina Jolie's direction is similarly straightforward, but not bad. Jack O'Connell gives another great performance, though I couldn't really ever believe him as an Italian-American. It's not an extraordinary film, but I think it's probably worth a watch.

That old fart almost had me sobbing at the end. Then I remembered what he said during their bombing run when he annihilated countless lives at the push of a button, "Get your cameras boys, I'm gonna light it up like Christmas." (Look at the movie poster, it says Christmas, too. Coincidence? Yeah, right.)

Sure, it's a good story and all, but it's clearly missing some punch. At first they make a fine dynamic too the story by going back and forth. That is what it is, but that idea simply stops as Zamperini becomes a captive. From here on out, almost every scene is a drag and feels forced and uninspired. Simply a lot of various/random prison camp scenarios making Watanabe a villain and Zamperini a hero. Even though O'Connell did a noteworthy job, I was disappointed overall. - Okay

Great acting by Jack O'Connell carries this film (he is in nearly every shot). The story draws thin at certain points and relies too much on emotional inspiration that the audience is assumed to have. A true tale of human perseverance, but such a grand biopic should have been a little more.

"The film version of Unbroken does not spend a lot of screen time on his Christian conversion--detailing it in a series of text cards before the closing credits. Inspired by a real life heroic tales, Unbroken is not presented as such. sure the main character is a force to be reckon with amidst his perseverance and integrity. nevertheless, the manner in which the survival story is drawn upon is too tedious. In other words, the film direction is a bit tad too familiar with similar case of survival found in Spielberg's "Empire of The Sun". Its failed to capture the real story significance.

Though it falls into simply a retelling of events, Unbroken is inspirational and moving, but lacks in the power of the emotional journey of Zamperini through its 'horrors of war' take on the story. Still, a very good film.

Every part drags just slightly, but great performances really help the film. Also poor directing by Jolie really ruined the raft scene (way to many mistakes that were very noticable, like the 2nd raft). I hated the Bird, I really hated him, so all power to the actor.

Yet another by the numbers biopic. More torture-porn-y as the film progresses, and by the end it just didn't mean anything anymore. The technical stuff was fine, but the script was sub-par and as a result so was the film as a whole.

There are parts of this I really liked, and parts of it that were just there. It's a shade heavy on the American Jingoism for my taste. It's a shade more religiously-undertoned than I expected; among other things, I immediately connoted Jesus' crucifixion from the plank scene. Also, wasn't there, y'know, a nuclear bombing that ended the war, not just... nothing? I dunno, that bugged me more than it should have. This is inoffensive, good in pieces, but should have been much better for its hype.

You know, I really wanted to like this film because the real life story is amazing. But that's just it, it's a great story about survival. The dialogue was crap and "the feel good moments" are almost overbearing in their cheesiness. Read the novel instead because the story of Louie Zamperini is one that needs to be told but skip out on this Oscar-Bait movie.

You just feel that this story should have felt and mattered more when leaving the theater. Jack O'Connell gives a great performance, but it just lacked a real strong pace (don't know if I should blame Jolie on that). Once he enters the POW camp, the movie just drags. A part of that problem is the main antagonist (the Bird), who just feels way too cartoonish. Again not sure if that is the actors fault or direction, but it was bad. Also, HOW THE HELL DID THEY GET THE SECOND RAFT BACK!

Unbroken is a movie that should inspire and instead feels like a waste of time. Based on an incredible true story of perseverance, it doesn't give us much insight into its lead character and plays out like a light torture porn film. What should be powerful and inspirational is boring. It starts off strong and engaging, but eventually wears us out and made me want to stop watching it. I'm not as strong as Louie Zamperini. Unbroken proved that much.

A competent and slightly overwrought biopic that succeeds thanks to its motivating true story, strong performances and heart stirring photography. Jolie is fine as a director. Any problems are with an unfocused script that tries to give equal emphasis to all parts of Louis' story.

This should really be far more moving and involving than it is, and the major problem is a screenplay that can never bring its leading character (or his plight) into focus – search in vain for any trace of influence from the Coens, this is a rote and ultimately tedious accounting of Zamperini’s ordeal, with neither the athletic scenes or the POW scenes managing to raise much tension; hindered further by O’Connell’s blank cipher rendering of the central character.

Jesus is king. Both the story and the film's structure are very predictable and formulaic: we've seen the same film a million times with the same tropes and excessive melodrama, and thus it gets boring very quickly. The Coen brother's writing (or whatever their involvement with the plot was) is not felt and I was surprised to read their names after seeing the film. But where the film excels at is it's glorifying the one King and Saviour of the world, our Lord Jesus Christ. Praise the Lord.

Undoubtedly a worthy story, but something was "off" with this film. Despite 47 days in a raft, and 2 years of constrant beatings with fists and Shinai, every time we see LZ, he has made a miraculous recovery! So much so that when he is taken out of the camp for a day, he looks great, and eats a hearty meal (umm! ). When he meets his family again, its like nothing has happened! It's a shame, it removed all sense of the unbelievable suffering these men really endured to evoke his "unbreakability"

There was nothing broken about this movie, other than the fact that this was a terrible movie to witness. That doesn't mean it's a bad movie, it's just hard to see one person suffer, and then think he's in the clear... just to suffer some more. If it wasn't for the nice ending to this movie, I would have hated it. You have to have some good with the bad in these kind of stories or you'll fatigue the audience. There's only so much suffering one can take in a single sitting...

Angelina has sucked with war movies. The first half of the movie was not catchy at all and the latter one tried to make Zamperini a Jesus figure (with carrying a beam of lumber like part of the cross). America needs heroes, the rest of the world don't on a silver screen.
