What in the hell?! Why is this so wildly popular? Most afterschool specials would find its content humbling, and it sounds like it was scored by Aaron Carter. It's not even fun to laugh at, which gives it zero redemptive qualities (except maybe that Hudgens is a looker, but that's it). Awful awful awful.

A dark look into what entertainment would be like if the world was run by god-fearing conservatives who also mastered genetic engineering and breed 'actors' in underground labs to very bland, non-threatening specifications. It's insanely depressing to think that a generation will grow up thinking THIS is what entertainment should be. It's so goddamn safe and wholesome it makes my soul bleed and more pathetic than my dating history.

Perhaps the most enjoyable made for TV Disney movie ever! Any movie that takes the most insignificant things and turns them into the most important things ever while making me care about them, is OK with me. Also, any movie that starts with a karaoke scene, and makes it look cool, is OK with me.

To damn with faint praise, not as bad as it could have been, thanks to the admitted talent of its cast, but just too square and earnest to be much fun, and its po-faced sincerity makes it difficult to get derisive fun from it either! Hudgens and (especially) Efron have since proven themselves charismatic enough stars to excuse their paper-thin characterisations here, and Reed seems to be having fun genially hamming it up as the theatre teacher. M’eh I’ll be gracious and give it a pass!

The dialogue and storytelling are cheesy but effective, beginning with the efficient opening that establishes our leads' basketball and bookworm backgrounds, as well as their respective person inside "just looking for a way to come out", continuing through its frank look at identity and acceptance (amidst the stereotypes and songs, the quiet conversation on the roof is a highlight), and ending with the cheeky suspense of the climax (which, hilariously, and wonderfully, is just an audition).

Not offensively terrible, but there's really nothing good about it either. I struggle to understand why this was so popular. Even the music itself lacks flavour and seems indistinguishable to that of any other Disney Channel music.

My cousin is going to star in the musical version of this at her school, so figured I'd better check this out first. For a movie that led to the creation of two sequels, a musical, and a TV series, and maybe even Glee, I was expecting so much more. The story was meh and the music and singers didn't seem all that great. Zac Efron was much better in later movies. Also, probably the worst set decoration I've seen in years.

High School Musical is a terrible movie with really good music. I am convinced that the adult actors in this movie were told to perform terribly just to make the young actors look better. Efron and Hudgens are the stars of this movie and they are pretty likeable Tisdale on the other hand is pushed on the audience and I didn't feel any draw to her character. There are moments were the camp work well for this production but overall it just isn't as engaging as I'd hoped.

Almost too innocuous to hate, High School Musical is still a chore to sit through thanks to predictable/eye-rolling story beats, unimaginatively staged musical numbers, and weak to embarassing performances from most of the cast (Ashley Tisdale, however, shines). Extremely poor production values as well, but that’s hardly a fair complaint. The screenplay, on the other hand, is wholly available for lambasting, and it deserves it.

If you enjoy music by Fun and the Kids of 88 and you are a Zac Efron fan, you will probably like HSMusical. Of course it is full of high school stereotypes, but aren't they fun to watch. All the grumpy couch potatoes have no frame of reference for a film they didn't have to pay for, steal or otherwise get for free. Honestly, what's wrong with people?

This is by no means a great, insightful, or terribly original movie... HOWEVER, I don't think there's one film that shaped the generation more than this one, nor a film that sticks out as so poignantly as a cultural meme. WHAT TEAM? WILDCATS. We're all Wildcats. We're all in this together. So get your head in the game.

Mistakes - 1) When Gabrielle sits down with a meal in a cafeteria scene, the meal disappears in the next shot. 2) In a scene where Troy is running to meet a meeting deadline, he checks his wrist for the time, but there's no watch. 3) In the Breaking Free scene, Gabrielle misses a cue, but then after a pep-talk, they restart the song, but Troy sings the cue instead.

Though I had no real desire to see a musical set in a high school, I found this passable. I don't think it deserves the rock bottom scores it's getting. The songs were catchy enough (yes they'd probably get annoying if heard twice), the actors were dynamic and attractive, which is fine as I'm not expecting kitchen sink realism here. Cheesy dialogue, but that is standard in most musicals. It ticks most of the boxes I'd want if I were a girl aged 10-14, so I can live vicariously and with a smile.

This really is a bad movie. Most made-for-TV Disney movies are so campy they're funny, but this one is trying very hard to impress beyond its abilities. Poor acting and music dubbing is what holds this back, considering the music, for the most part is at least suitable. The love story and drama in the movie is very bad and keeps this movie down on a pretty boring, meandering level. It's bizarre that this is such a phenomenon considering how generic it really is.
