The film ends with a slo-mo shot of people shaking their heads in disgust while the Verve's "Bitter Sweet Symphony" plays. Yes, it's one of the best endings to a film I have seen.

Thank goodness it has *that* scene with Sarah Michelle and Selma. It also has a star-studded cast and an obnoxiously relentless string of 90s hit songs, but aside from that delight, it's really weak stuff. Teenage fantasy drivel which paved the way for a generation of YA abominations.

Gellar was pretty much made for this role, so 40 points go to her. Then an additional 7 points go to me for not partaking in self-harm every time Phillippe was on screen with that atrocious haircut and his gag-worthy "acting". Ugh. This film is essentially a glorified Gossip Girl episode with dialogue worthy of a porno, but it was verrrrrry entertaining.

The concept of this movie is brilliantly sick, simply because the teenage mind truly can work in the ways that this movie conveys. A bet on whether or a not a guy can have sex with the new headmaster's daughter? Brilliant.

Clever adaptation of the novel to modern times and younger ages, and probably with hard influence of the acting in Stephen Frears' version. Some changes are good and some are arguable (for example, the ending), but reasonable (it's his version, there're enough out there and we don't have to get just copycats). Worst thing is probably the score and the over-over-acted Selma Blair, I don't know if it's her fault or director asked her to do that, but it's by far too much.

While I'm sure the book was better I liked the movie quite well, if nothing else, for the frank look at the relationships of manipulators. If you've never interacted with supremely fake or manipulative people (or politics) this movie probably loses everything.

What can I say, it's a guilty pleasure. A glossy teen contemporary version of Les Liaisons Dangereuses that while inferior to the likes of Frears' 1989 Dangerous Liaisons, at least has a cracking soundtrack. As for the film itself, its clearly not meant to be taken seriously and as a trashy teen drama it entertains and titillates enough to be one I enjoy going back to every few years. Buffy as a bitch? It worked for teenage me, and still does!

Starts out as bad in an amusing way, then becomes bad in a boring way, before a newly tacked on entirely ridiculous ending closes things up. Both male actors are entirely devoid of charm, the women at least look good while being unconvincing (Blair is the worst offender, playing Cecile as borderline mentally retarded)

So it happens that I'm rating this higher than Dangerous Liaisons (1988) -an unexpected move between movies of completely different leagues!!! Contrary to my prejudice before seeing, this movie is a clever take on the book; true to the spirit, good soundtrack decisions, funny and sexy as hell. So I had to watch it too late after so many years due to my bias which turned out to be wrong.

Why should every literature classic be viciously raped by piss-poor Hollywood adaptations? Sexual manipulation and abuse would make for an introspective, absorbing exploitation film, and this one tries to be sexy, thrilling and dangerous, but it is only ever drab, pretentious and stupid. The only thing I agree with this film: "E-mail is for geeks and paedophiles. Write her a letter." You tell them that, Sebastian!

Although the story at hand is ultimately a tragic one, and includes a masterfully-done conclusion involving Gellar that rivals the one in "Dangerous Liaisons", this is also an often very funny comedy, particularly when dealing with small blink-and-you'll-miss details involving the characters, the always-amusing dialogue, and the infantile antics of Cecile.

Smug and tacky, yet... I get some sort of morbid schadenfreude out of this piece of camp. Its sadism is nearly merciless (until a gutless ending), the humor is dark, and I enjoy the off-note register by which it is written and played (intentional or not). It does unfortunately uphold an outdated morality, wherein chaste females are either angelic objects of desire or twits to be take advantage of, while the villain is a sexually uninhibited temptress.

It's a film that's worth watching if only for its characters, which were well-written and intriguing. Seeing them manipulate their victims might not be endearing, but it's engaging. The story is full of cliche, and the actors aren't exactly all that good, but I still can't say that I had a bad time while watching it. This is a film that takes an 18th-century novel and transplants its setting to New York in the 1990s. I was always interested in what would happen next.

Top badass moment? Sarah Michelle Gellar gets to be the sexy-mean-bad-bitch-from-hell that Buffy could only dream of becoming, (because the latter was a prime-time TV character and had to do all that fighting to protect us all). I'm almost sorry how it ends. What a bad person! Extra kudos for the script managing to fit in Captain Picard too, always a badass thing to do. No cats, chainsaws or decapitations.

Cruel Intentions might be a great movie, for me, because it was a hit during my formative years. The cast is filled with young actors who came up in Hollywood while I was coming up in life. The story of a brother and sister during summer break from boarding school who scheme and manipulate the people around them for their own enjoyment is engrossing. Ryan Phillippe is fantastic in this movie. He is aweful throughout the whole movie, which makes it savory when he somehow redeems himself.
