If you like to see great acting, this is the film for you. Ridley Scott has crafted this film to center on Plummer and Michelle Williams, and it shows. I couldn't even tell that Plummer did this on such short notice; in fact, he's the best part of the entire film. There are some points where the story does stray from Paul's kidnapping and becomes more about the elder Getty; however, All the Money in the World's slow-burning fuse makes for a spectacular finale and shows off the talent at hand.

Marky Mark has come a long way from his days of The Happening, however, I feel they could have put someone much more remarkable in his role. That being said, everything else works. It's a little bland for a Scott film, but Plummer is fantastic and Williams works well in the role. Not the best this year, but it's worth a watch for Plummer and some great cinematography.

Let's be honest - Christopher Plummer is the best thing that could've happened to this movie. He's the only real reason worth watching this apart from some nice cinematography, one or two scenes of sharp dialogue, and an okay performance from Michelle Williams.

I think I liked this maybe a bit more than my average 75, but, I'm tempering my score because this strikes me as a movie that might not age well for me. Plummer is great, but I'm afraid I don't quite get the hype for Michelle Williams. Ridley Scott probably doesn't deserve the Best Director nom(s) he's getting for this, but for the name and the fact that he pulled off the Herculean task of re-shooting an entire primary character in a few weeks. I dug this for sure, though. Intriguing story.

It makes more sense that Plummer plays getty seeing as how his own grandson was cast as JPG III. But Getty is a type of character in this that was made for Spacey to play tbh. Oh well. Still an enjoyable time

Man on Smolder. Starring Marky Mark as White Denzel, some guy with long hair as unlikable Dakota Fanning, Michelle Williams as Rhada Mitchell with more talent, and Christopher Plummer as Kevin Spacey pre-rape allegations as Marc Anthony. Too bad Tony jumped off a bridge; his version was better.

A great thriller that remains tense and frustrating (in the good ways) the entire time. Marky Mark holds his own surprisingly against Plummer and Williams who act the fuck out of this movie. The movie balances Getty and the kidnapping decently, although sometimes the pacing is abrupt.

A standard kidnapping/hostage thriller with one interesting idea. Plummer's Getty (with no distracting prosthetics, thank fuck) is the movie's best conceit, a jovial old man with a heart of ice who provides this film with its most complex questions. Aside from that this is a pretty tight historical thriller that doesn't take many risks. Williams is quite good but Wahlberg is just doing his usual thing.

I think this will always be remembered more for the real world controversy with Kevin Spacey than the actual film itself. Which is too bad, really, because it's a pretty decent movie. I don't know if Spacey would've been better in the role, but Plummer was good. As was Michelle Williams. I'd never heard the full story about the true events that inspired the film, so that was pretty interesting. What a sad man Getty was. It was a well-shot film, and I'd say it's worth a watch.

Some good performances help an otherwise dry and monotonous film. Plumber and Williams are good. The cinematography was great. I just think pacing issues really hurt this film. Also despite giving a decent performance Mark Wahlberg felt slightly miscast.

For Scott, an unusually restrained, matter-of-fact telling of this fascinating story, centered on the elder Plummer's masterful evocation of a peculiarly enigmatic man - what is the basis of his apparent cruelty? That Scott and Plummer refuse to make him an irreproachable bastard (and leave the ultimate question hanging) only makes him more intriguing. Williams scores strongly in a more thankless role, and the scenes with the kidnappers are occasionally a little too rote and predictable.

From frame one to the final frame, there's the feeling that most involved here aren't putting in their all, except for the excellent Williams, and especially Scott, who's merely autonomously directing. The frugality of Getty III should come across as more darkly amusing, which makes me suspect this film's TV show cousin, Trust, may be superior.

Watch: Stream it, but you won't miss anything | The trailer makes this look like 'Marky Mark Presents: Taken'. In reality it's two hours of people explaining that money is/isn't important, followed by one good speech by Marky Mark, and then the movie wraps up. There's a couple spots that promise to be exciting, but they're far between and fleeting. Not a terrible movie at all, but I felt very "meh" afterwards.

Ridley Scott has to be the most uneven director working today. Oftentimes he'll produce something stale and uninspired, and then he'll surprise us with something like The Martian or this: a tight, well-acted, well-crafted film that feels as competent as it does because it's done by a veteran filmmaker.

This would've been a real bummer without Plummer. Scott's direction doesn't do much beyond what expected, specially when focused on procedural suspense than in lame characterization. A study about one of capitalist's most notorious sociopaths, an old man who built his fortune without paying taxes, investing his money on art instead of really spending -- because he just couldn't. Second hour way better than the first. Williams really needs to stop suffering.

It's and ok film, the acting could've been better, but is entertain to see a very complex side of human nature: I am talking about extreme misery, the one you could not believe. The rest of the film is average and not very memorable.

Dry. The opening scene is good. Little sympathy for the young kidnapped Getty, whom we see very little of. Aside from the ear, there are only a few shots of him lying in a bed, flat as his character. Plummer gave Getty some depth. Wahlberg did alright Co sidering his stepping in for Spacey last minute. The movie left me more curious about the story of J. Paul Getty than his grandson.

Criticker says I will find this movie 'Alright' and I agree. Its period setting is executed well and the stingy old grandfather plays his role with aplomb. It reminded me of Scrooge McDuck from The Duck Tales! However, Kevin Spacey (who played that role originally and whose scenes were reshot just a month before the movie's release) would have absolutely nailed that role.

In service of making Getty III "likeable" they've wiped out the fact that he was a teenage coke user, celebrity schmoozer and dealer in drugs and diamonds. For fear that audiences wouldn't sympathize with a high-flying low-life, we've instead been ask to sympathize with a meek, personality-free cypher. Meanwhile, Wahlberg is still not a good actor and sinks a scene that was clearly written to be a moment of crowd-pleasing catharsis.

Tedious, thanks to being so manufactured, and the original intention of having Kevin Spacey play Getty would have fallen right in with that, being so overly type-casty. Christopher Plummer, the second choice, ends up being the only interesting choice in the entire production. You can judge by the different trailers that he delivers his lines in a way that adds at least a tiny bit of depth to a completely flat character, in a completely flat movie.

Without Christopher Plummer coming in and excelling the way he did this film may have been half as good. We have no idea what the original vision for this role would have looked like, but Plummer alongside Wahlberg and Williams does his best to create tension. The film jumped all over the map and that hurt the message of the film. Still a quality film that does a good job shaping the narrative around the talents of the cast who create a stunning portrait of a true story.

It's far from being the best thriller ever but it is a different take on the kidnapping genre and (based on my research) does the real story justice. What really moves this film is the spectacular cast. One silver lining of Kevin Spacy being a horrible predator is that we got to see Christopher Plummer in the role of Getty which he absolutely nails. However, too much time in the movie is spent on the least interesting characters.

Hard to imagine Kevin Spacey playing the role of Getty. I'm guessing that the switch to Plummer improved the movie. However the whole kidnapping lacks tension and neither script or directing are very engaging. Good acting and nice cinematography make it watchable though.
