There's a little more here than one would expect. Jack Black is still his same type cast self, Mos Def is a little too deadpan, and Weaver, Glover, and Farrow are unutilized. With the cards stacked against it, "Be Kind Rewind" comes out on top because of themes of community, history, and comradery--something throwaway comedies like this seldom attempt to capture. Light-hearted, but good-natured fare.

Lacking in humor, but there's more than enough heart. The problem with Be Kind Rewind - one of them, anyway - is that it advertises itself as a comedy, when it's really more of a feel-good picture with some funny moments interspersed throughout the picture. It fails to live up to its main concept, but creates an interesting story despite that. It's a bit of a mess, but enjoyable nonetheless.

I hate to dump on this movie, because it does have some funny moments and has some real originality, but it's just not very good. Black is pretty annoying, the entire premise is too absurd to be treated as seriously as the film does, and all that originality is shoehorned into an incredibly cliché narrative. Still, the filming bits, which were about half the movie, were entertaining and on the whole it has enough heart to be enjoyable.

It's hard to see where the harsh criticism is coming from. Though it's certainly not Oscar gold, Be Kind Rewind is thoroughly fun, creative, and humorous the entire way through. Jack Black and Mos Def play off each other well with great chemistry and the writing is good for what it is. Clever movie references and funny ways of shooting big scenes on a low budget will get a rise out of the audience. If you're looking for a good time at the movies give this a shot, you won't regret it.

Enjoyable and fun comedy. Admittedly it won't be as enjoyable if you haven't seen the films it references with it's shoe-string budget remakes but that's to be expected with this type of movie. Jack Black and Mos Def are a great comedic team. I must note that the chain link fence camo joke was ridiculous and incredibly hilarious. While Be Kind Rewind isn't packed with Gondry's trademark surrealism there is enough to please his fans here. Worth seeing for sure.

As a movie itself, it definitely has its setbacks. The plot isn't so great, especially the ending, and it drags in a couple spots. But the sweded movies are just so fun, so clever and charming, that I can forgive the rest. Black and Mos Def have a good chemistry, and you can just see how much fun Gondry is having behind the camera. Which is appropriate, because even though it might not be in the plot, this movie is about the joy and magic of moviemaking, and in that respect it succeeds.

I would've preferred a collage of the movie remakes. All of a sudden this movie turns into a very basic eighties "let's save the rec center" movie. If I wanted to watch Breakin, I'm not above actually watching Breakin.

Why the hate? Yes the movie is flawed -- on a plot level probably deeply so -- but it has such an infectious spirit about the joy of film and the magic of movie-making that I can't help but have a good time with it. Gondry's low-tech effects work is great, even outside the movie "swedes". Speaking of which, the way they re-shoot 2001 is pure genius. Gondry brings such a lovable visual wit to the film that if you don't go in looking for groundbreaking story, you'll surely be entertained.

Gondry tried too hard to make it feel naive and sincere. Mos, Black and pimped car design are the only thing worth looking here. Mia Farrow after all these years would be welcome if her part wasn't so mediocre. I managed to go through it once, but probably I will forget it in a short instance.

Jack Black is grating and unfunny. Some of the ghostbusters parody stuff was funny, but then the movie morphs into a schmaltzy love letter to the movies with a frankly ridiculous ending. I wanted to see more of the "Sweded" movies and less of the "save the video store" crap. The Alma character was horribly underwritten. Waste of time.

Gondry is a rather interesting director, but he is also a rather poor screenwriter. His narratives never live up to his directorial potential. (It comes as no surprise, then, that Eternal Sunshine is still his best work.)

Unexpectedly by-the-books in a few too many ways, Gondry has a real visual flare that saves this from being awful. You may like it, but its mix of off-kilter directing and too-normal plot causes a little cinematic nausea.

The first 15 minutes are entertaining but the rest bored me. The remakings of movies did not entertain me. I think people are so affected by the basic idea that they overlook that the movie is wasted in the realization of that idea. Watch 'Plan 9 From Outer Space' for a better feeling of what is attempted here, and for more fun.

The concept had great potential, but after starting well they went and ruined it. I'd prefer it if they had spent more time filming the funny movie remakes using Michel Gondry's bricolage skills, and less time driving the story with Hollywoodised character development and hollow conflict. Could have been fantastic if Gondry had only eschewed feelgood charm in favour of something much darker, more absurd, or creative.

I really enjoyed the concept of the movie more than I enjoyed its entirety. This one hits a chord for those who love movies, and there's really something to be said about that, however, it lost me toward the end once Jack Black's and Mos Def's profitable plan hits the skids. That said, it's original, but too slight; admirable, but not thoroughly funny and entertaining. I really want to strongly recommend this, but I can't help but feel like I'm stuck on the fence.
