It's just fun, you know? A lot of big-hearted, candy-colored fun. The entire cast gives it their all, and the musical numbers are energetic, catchy, and often very funny. It leaves your with a grin on your face and a bounce in your step.

When so many modern musicals are hamstrung by excessive self-consciousness, HAIRSPRAY's brash sincerity comes as a breath of fresh air. The songs are bright and catchy, "You Can't Stop the Beat" being particularly vibrant; it serves as a most fitting finale. The plot is a bit streamlined from the earlier film, but the spirit and message aren't notably blunted. Fine acting, with John Travolta doing pretty well by the drag role of Edna, and Nikki Blonsky making a fine debut as Tracy. Great fun.

Remarkably, I didn't hate it. In part it was because most of the common modern musical tropes are missing or muted or just plain tolerable in this one: the jazz hands and overly enthusiatic, hugely choreographed dance numbers; the overt seriousness in an unrealistic genre; the obviously-written-by-drama-club-losers songs. But who am I kidding, the bulk of the entertainment in this one comes from Walken and Travolta in a fat suit playing a woman. That's a recipe for success, if I ever saw one.

I see no need to compare this to the Waters film; after all, it's not even a direct remake. Catchy songs, great cast, and yes, that includes Efron, who sorta won me over in this flick even though I'm used to hating his guts based on the High School Musical franchise. Amazing how much better his singing sounds without the Sickly Sweet Disney Channel Voice Filter(tm). Very good entertainment, unless you hate musicals, in which case... gtfo.

Not bad at all. It's very John Waters without the extreme edge, which is exactly what it is. Everything is cheesy and too glossy, but the songs are kind of fun and the heart of the script is pretty solid.

While Travolta struck me as a bit goofy at first you start to feel for his character as the movie goes, so he gets the job done. Nikki is a fantastic Tracy. The music and choreography are beautiful and it feels like authentic 50's/60's dancing and music. I was very satisfied with the movie. It's worth the ticket. See it.

WONDERFUL!!!!! The entire cast is just so incredibly fun to watch (with the minor exception of Amanda Bynes seeming awkwardly out of place). John Travolta and Christopher Walken.....wow. This movie made me so happy, its...just...so...fun!!!! Truly a surprise because I was not expecting something so funny, witty, poignant, clever, lovable, and all out joyous!

I think this misses the point. John Waters's Hairspray was a campy homage to lower-grade teen movies; making it into a musical sends the camp-ometer into overdrive and makes the whole thing too cartoonish, so that when the points about racial and other discrimination, that the original made so effectively, are attempted, I just couldn't take them seriously. Also, the songs are some of the most forgettable I've ever heard, and, maybe this says more about me than the movie, but I was annoyed by it

Based on John Waters' 1988 satire of civil rights-era nostalgia, this movie-musical adaptation makes the same mistake as the 2002 Broadway incarnation -- it domesticates Waters' parodistic anarchy into general-audience silliness.

The color and campy Broadway energy of Hairspray is most certainly not for everyone. For those who are accepting of what its trying to do, Hairspray is about as fun and energetic as a musical can get. With over-the-top yet lovable characters in service of a worthwhile and relevant story. Whether you like the film or not, you'll be humming the tunes for weeks after the fact.

It's just so much fun. "You Can't Stop the Beat" is one of the most completely joyful, entertaining ten minutes of a musical out there, and there's obviously a great message behind the whole thing without getting overly preachy about it. Great performances all around.

I just want to say that I'm not a fan of musicals so in the end Hairspray didn't win me over. It's fun enough with a decent amount of laughs throughout though. I appreciate it's desire to promote racial equality but it's about as subtle as a sledgehammer and seems to try and do this by using a ton of stereotypes. Maybe I'm being over critical because I'm not a musical fan but still. To be fair I was entertained and I'm glad I saw it but I won't be watching it again.

I liked some musical movies in the past, but this one didn't catch me. The way the civil rights fight is treated as some sort of prop to show the main girl is nice kind of leaves a weird taste in your mouth, if one takes a second to think about it. It is worth showing but, I don't know, couldn't have been treated differently? Though one has to admit, Travolta at his age in a fat suit and in heels still had some swift steps in that one dance.

A bright and colorful look compliment the fun and upbeat soundtrack, but ultimately Hairspray can't retain its initial charm for the entire running time of the movie. There really isn't anything wrong with the movie outside of the lagging middle section where it tries so hard to be social commentary rather than sticking to a simple musical-lite plot. It's certainly a worthwhile event and it's never bad seeing Brittany Snow or Amanda Bynes in the same movie.

I've seen the original movie but it was so long ago that I don't remember much about it. This update was a lot of fun and I found myself tapping my feet the whole time. I liked Travolta as the mom but there were moments when I found his Baltimore accent to be terrible and distracting. Amanda Bynes, once again, plays a 30 year old teenager. Christopher Walken seemed a bit out of place but he did a great job. Michelle Pfeiffer was fantastic. I would love to see her in more roles like this.

Deliberate camp generally doesn't work for me so I've never been a fan of Waters' films. He finds bad performances hilarious but I don't. Still, there's lots of great rarely heard 50's/60s songs here and this is technically competent in a way his early indies weren't. It's also interesting to see something like this now because Waters increasingly plays alot of the racism for laughs & its hard to imagine modern Woke audiences not finding multiple things to be outraged about here.

If rating something 91 only means that it is only decent, Hairspray deserves the rating. Zac and James Marden are perfect for their roles. Seeing Travolta in drag loudly demonstrates that this is meant to be an exercise in Campy excess. It's easy to see that Walken, Pfeiffer, and Latifah enjoyed their roles. John Walters deserves every penny derived from his art.

This definitely has some draggy bits. Some songs are too repetitive and go on frustratingly long but it's pretty easy to get rooting for the fat girl who brings an end to racism. It's nice to see a fat girl main character portrayed with some humanity and that only makes John Travolta's character seem insensitive by comparison. His lines about how he "can't stop eating" have a disturbing contrast with Tracy's healthy character.

One of the most entertaining musicals I’ve ever seen, and one that doesn’t at all as long as it is. Seeing this last week felt like opening a time capsule, before a lot of these actors got more popular or fell off. It is a legitimately humorous, beautiful-looking movie too.
