Pleasant enough, and Bridges and Allen are great, but the pacing is choppy (rushed in the first act, drawn out in the third) and the plot couldn't be more predictable. Still worth a watch, though. Seems to promise a sequel that we never got.

Probably the most serious film Carpenter's ever directed, includes a great performance by the highly underrated Bridges.

A solid movie, at the time of it's release "Starman" was the closest that Carpenter had gotten to an all ages type movie. Bridges plays a dufus, I mean alien, and Allen was horrendously underutilized in the 80's, so it's always nice to see her in a movie. But as far as Carpenter movies go, this is about the least important movie in his 80's filmography.

An altogether alright Sci-fi flick. The romance bits suck, and the shit at the end was pretty lame, but that doesn't ruin the film.

A sentimental story about universalizability failing to account for the particularities of the human race. Starman comes from a place of universal unity: everyone speaks the same language, everyone is at peace, everyone is treated as if one individual can be exchanged for the other; everyone and everything is the same. When Starman is thrown into humanity's world, the alien is shocked by how truly different everyone is. I liked the premise, but it relied too heavily on platitudes and schmaltz.

Jeff Bridges is always fun, but the plot of this is one hundred percent predictable. If you've seen ET, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, or any other movie with good aliens on modern-day Earth, you can predict the course of this movie from minute one.

Although it was an assignment, Carpenter's trademark use of widescreen is clearly evident, especially in night scenes, and there are several atmospheric shots that rank among his best work of the period. If he sustained the mysterious and oddly intense mood of the opening act, it would have been a winner. Regrettably, it lapses frequently into cheesy melodrama, with only Allen's sincere (too sincere?) performance and parts of Nitzsche's synth score keeping it afloat. Bridges is hit and miss.

Bawww come on y'all, why is everybody being so nice to this movie? Jeff Bridges plays an alien as a mix between special needs and Frankenstein, spitting out top-shelf cornball cliches such as "Define LOVE". This xeno-fugitive/kidnapper style movie was done with a lot more charm in Short Circuit. It's cool guys, I love John Carpenter too, but this is good as a mockery target and little else

Pleasantly surprised. The acting was great, especially from Jeff Bridges. It's aged pretty well, minus a few very 80s special effects. So glad I watched it.

A sci-fi romance brimming with 80's charm, it features great performances from Bridges- who plays the titular role to perfection- & Allen, as well as the strong supporting cast. The plot is basic, but the dynamic between the lead characters & watching their relationship build is what makes it so fun to watch. There's drama, there's comedy, & there's even some high tension towards the end. All-in-all, it's a super effective & cleverly written sci-fi love story that's definitely worth a look.

Criticker's prediction was exactly right this time. 77%. I grew up with this film, at least in some ways, and watching this again years later, I realize most of it is exactly as I remembered, and Jeff Bridges was a great choice to play this fish-out-of-water alien creature. He's funny, and he's got some pretty decent chemistry with Karen Allen. Overall, a pretty original alien flick that I think everyone should at least watch once.

Despite the possibilities afforded by what is, frankly, a morbid premise, "Starman" is a disappointingly unexplored, predictable, and standard affair; one of Carpenter's least interesting films.

John Carpenter Starman was pretty cool. The opening moments had a very Carpenter style special effects moment but after that it was just an interesting story of an alien and the woman who helps him get home. This whole movie screams, "What if John Carpenter made a kids movie?" Well this is it, to the tee. It has an interesting story with some plot holes and it's weird. All of that mixes together to make something uniquely Carpenter. I'd watch it again. P.S. That baby has no chance.

Schmaltzy sci-fi/love story feels like Carpenter is stretching to distance himself from the 80s “E.T. Invasion” – it’s an interesting and novel approach, but as we are forced to take as read the love and passion between Allen and the “real” Bridges, the developing relationship between Allen and the Starman never feels convincing (and certainly not passionate). Allen and Bridges are always fun to watch, and Bridges is to be commended for his full-on “method” approach to his performance.

STARMAN began as a 1984 movie directed by John Carpenter, about an extraterrestrial [Jeff Bridges] coming to Earth after encountering our Voyager II probe. He found himself being chased by the military (George Fox [Richard Jaeckel] and Mark Shermin [Charles Martin Smith]), and aided by a young human woman named Jenny Hayden (played by Karen Allen). He ultimately found his way home, but not before fathering a child. In 1986 a television series based on the movie premiered on the US ABC network

Jeff Bridges gives an incredible performance here. The way he moves, the way he looks around with jerky movements, the way he over-stretches his mouth while speaking and clicks and pops on the beginnings or ends of certain words, it all feels truly and believably alien in a way that very few alien performances do. And Karen Allen is a perfect foil to ground Bridges' weirdness. John Carpenter is outside of his sweet spot but does a wonderful job balancing the myriad tones

If in Christine Carpenter told a story of a boy that fills an emotional void with an unemotional object (a car), here the salvation comes from above, in a narrative that refuses to be melancholic -- it is, actually, sober and slow-burning --, and that is nicely directed as a naive sci-fi romance (vs military agitation). Here, a woman that lost her lover and can't have babies is touched by an invisible form of life that takes the shape of her beloved man and brings her the seed of life. Not bad.

At the time this came out, I was at an age where I wanted to see any sci-fi flick but was always upset I didn't catch this. Now, having seen it, I'm glad, because I would have hated it then. It has some sci-fi elements, but at heart, it's a road trip movie with a prolonged romance, and, honestly, those pieces have all been done before. For a director who takes a lot of chances, this one felt a little bland. Best scene: that first cigarette will do you in.

John Carpenter visits Spielberg Country. It’s an awkward fit that leans on platitudes and begs comparison to superior emotional extraterrestrial dramas. But it’s boosted by a feisty Karen Allen and a wonderfully weird Jeff Bridges, whose performance earned one of the cooler Oscar nominations of this era.
