An unwatchable glimpse into a terribly boring, overly-confident Vincent Gallo, who would be better served in the film industry by getting coffee for the directors he so badly wants to imitate. Even an interesting historical footnote--Scott Norwood's missed field goal in Super Bowl XXV--is trashed to the point of oblivion. I hated this movie.

Billy is a cynic, a pathological misanthrope, possibly trauma-stricken, and yet Buffalo '66 is an earthly and humane, even warm film. Layla's character is just as wrong-headed as Billy, with her incurable naivety and Stockholm syndrome, but she's not a caricature. It's hyper-realist in its attention to the minutiae of human behavior (he needs to pee, she waits forever for her hot chocolate, etc), but from the clash of personalities, Gallo draws endless surprises and great underlying humor.

This film has a very worn and dingy aesthetic that I love. There are countless problems with this film---mostly being various manifestations of Gallo's firmly-entrenched misogyny--- but even so, I can't say that I hate it. Indeed, I have "Buffalo '66" to thank for the resurrection of Yes' prog-rock magnum opus, "Heart of the Sunrise."

I saw this movie shortly after moving to Buffalo, where I've lived several years. I consider the city to be one of the main characters, like a poor man's Manhattan, and in that respect Gallo captures the feel of a run-down city that is far too in love with sports that it never wins. It's depressing, but hey its kinda depressing to live here in the first place.

Don't think a film has ever bothered less with coherent dialogue/narrative structure as the film seems to be an appendage to Gallo's redemption seeking quest for a past often only hinted at, with Gallo in complete control on and behind the screen. I thought about turning it off after 20 minutes, but I'm happy I didn't. The scene where Gallo takes a leak and moments that follow seem to be the crux for keeping me in my seat. A stylized experience from a unique individual. Recommended !

There's something paradoxical in the sense that so much of Buffalo '66 feels like it's constructed of allusions to other films and filmmakers, and yet in the end my immediate thought was that I hadn't seen anything quite like it before and that Gallo was something of an original. Strangely gripping film.

The film has a certain undernourished poise that I appreciate, and it builds, through a unique cadence, to about 3 moments of grace that I found truly remarkable. In between, though, I couldn't help but feel the narcissism of the filmmakers, as if its worldview of naturalized, justified, polite stupidity (and for that matter, misogyny) went beyond its characters.

Finding comedy in the most unfunny of things, and the unfunny in the usually comical - Vincent Gallo's quirky, eyebrow-raising "Buffalo '66" can be seen as a self-satire on Gallo's part and as a self-aware exercise in smugness. No matter what, it is genius scene after genius scene that builds the film up to the point of where the audience (and possibly even Gallo) has no idea what the point is, and that's what makes it so enjoyably brilliant.

Vicent Gallo really hates women. Ricci is wooden in this film but it really doesn't detract much. Everything is so odd and uncomfortable. It seems to be taking place 20 years ago. See it once as there isn't really any other films that feel like this out there. Huston and Corrigan are great.

Holy shit, this is like the film I've been wanting to make my whole life. Kind of like if Cassavetes directed Punch-Drunk Love, or something. I applaud Vincent for having the cajones to make this film, it's really the kind of film that will only resonate with a small select group of people, but when it does the film is like a godsend. One of the most beautiful love stories I've ever seen. I would have ended it differently though...

It gets more interesting as it moves along (nothing really worthwhile until the parents come in.) The visual style is interesting, some of the acting is good but... man, fuck Vincent Gallo. Not his character. I mean fuck his character too, but also fuck him as a person. Fuck him fictionally and non-fictionally.

with every year that passes earnest, generous films like this seem more precious. few actors more transparently wear their personas as a shield, but to gallo's credit he's always willing to puncture that in his films. as much as i like the bulk of THE BROWN BUNNY the ending is too hysterical and hyperbolic to have the desired effect, whereas here the process of undressing to an almost fetal state is more organic. it's also funnier, even has proto-ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT family flashbacks!

Vincent Gallo is a misogynist and self-indulgent hack. While the character study and family relationship interaction is difficult and challenging in a good way, the MPDG (manic pixie dream girl) stereotype of Ricci is just awful. Add in a cop-out ending and a great movie is wasted.

It was like a family movie on amphetamines. Lights, angles, music... everything was genuinely bizarre. With a great cast, acting was the forte of the movie, and it made me feel that all of them enjoyed acting characters with short fuses. Buffalo Billy with his with blue shirt and red boots inadvertently scores.

As one fellow kumpler put nicely, he does have a "rare quality of capturing undiluted loneliness on film". Beside the arbitrary sequence of events that unfold in quite a seemingly meaningless and awkward direction, their was something extraordinary about the substance of this film. Vincent Gallo played an excellent role, capturing that purely devoid of life expression. The city of Buffalo was portrayed as a soulless and sullen wasteland successfully. Overall, a gripping and aberrant experience.

Buffallo '66 has style going for it, but ultimately Gallo comes off here as a poor man's Jim Jarmusch. Something about it doesn't quite click for me and I found myself just kind of being bored with the whole thing. On the upside it looks fantastic, despite the obnoxious characters the acting is strong, and it actually has a pretty solid story behind it. It just lacks a charm that makes it all enjoyable.

Vincent Gallo is a real character. From what I read about him, he seems like an idiot with strong convictions. I had a hard time separating his character in this film with his persona. Thing is, Gallo's narcissism makes this film. Even though this character is self-centered asshole teenage-adult, you can't but be fascinated by him. Great choice of the soundtrack, I discovered Yes because of this film. In Vincent's mind, everyone wants to see his penis. Poor guy.

Christina Ricci's cherubic smile and offbeat charisma carry the film. Even for a character piece, Gallo gives us way too much filler involving his protagonist. The film drags like hell in several places, although I liked the spotlight divagations and the screen transitions to flashbacks. I have to admit that the buildup paid off when the film picked up real steam in the final act and finally delivered Billy Brown's oft-foreshadowed transformation.

A little shrill at times, especially the opening, but it's such an intriguing characterization by Gallo that it compels you to keep watching. And it's definitely worth it. His character is despicable but as the film continued I also began to feel sympathy for him, his horrible upbringing and terrible choices spreading blame quite evenly. Not that it absolves him of responsibility for the things he does, but it brings complexity to a character who on paper would be easy to dismiss. Nice style too

It's difficult to appreciate this film now for what it was. Its mix of Cassavetes, French New Wave, and 90's indie cinema now plays like the cinematic wet dream of a self absorbed hipster, yet in the late 90's it felt totally fresh and somehow new. Nonetheless, no amount of retro trappings are capable of disguising the raw beauty and tenderness that lies at the core of this story about lonely outsiders seeking meaningful human connection. The best tragicomedy of the 90's.

Vincent Gallo sets the standard high with his acting. The scenes with him and Ricci are quite good, but all the rest is a disturbingly mixture of styleflaws, bad acting and crappy direction, giving me the feeling that he was too ashamed to tell this story after all , or he really doesn't understand what he's talking about, which makes this movie one narcissistic trip of Gallo showing Gallo...

This is a fascinating film, because of how far it goes with showing this psychopath and his back-story to how he became one. It's fantastically put together, with incredibly strong characterisation, as well as some appropriate stylish flourishes. And yet it's the Ricci character that lets this down, though well acted, she's just a character that serves as propelling the story forward and feels unbelievable as a result. Given how integral she is to the core of this film, it's a let-down.

Aesthetically I really like what's goin on here. The cinematography is great. I also think the acting, while not anything amazing, fits the vibe of the film well. But man the screenplay is just a total mess that severely weakens the potential of the film. None of the decisions regarding the two main characters make any sense and the pacing is far too slow. I like the climax in the strip club, and what Gallo tries to do at the end, but by that time it's simply too little too late.
