Sort of like a very condensed movie version of The Wire. Blown away by this...amazing film.

Remarkably successful attempt at portraying the extreme complexities of the situation while at the same time maintaining a meaningful story. Attempting social critique in the guise of a genre film has been done before, but very rarely this well. Even serves as an Iraq War metaphor...and all in the form of a sequel, too. The all-time ticket sales and box office record-holder in Brazil is an intellectual and sociological essay! Both his features and documentaries make Padilha a great director.

Almost better than the first, at times Tropa de Elite 2 is just like Dark Knight: a complex, dramatic and riveting crime saga, that hits you good with its documental editing and realistic characters.

Padilha knows how to tell a story, how to direct an action scene - and he know the milieus in his home country well. This is less gritty and disturbing than the first and plays more like a genre film. At the same time I'm sure it's a relevant social critique. The style and narration sometimes reminded me of 'City of God'. Great movie.

Padilha has done it again. Sequels are always difficult, history speaks for itself, but TDE2 takes a natural shift from the focus on street crimes in the first, to a more critical view on corrupt politicians in this one. All still done in the same fast pacing style. Wagner Moura once again steals the show as col. Nascimento, but even though his character does his best, the city of Rio is still left unresolved of its problems, cause its seems like once you squash a bug a dozen new will appear!

A sequel that takes the first part to a higher level? Sounds rare, but Padilha made it! Both parts of Tropa de Elite are absolutely stunning, and this one puts you deeper into a world most of us can't imagine. A network of dirty politicians between corruption, exploitation and a society on the brink. In the thick of it: Nascimento the head of Brasilian's special Force #1, perfectly played by Rodrigo Pimentel. Tropa de Elite is one of my most favorite gangster epics! Absolutely awesome!

Didn't like the first one, but this one is much more mature and coherent. Don't expect an elite squad movie, this is raw politics to the bone. And anybody mentioning this in relation to City of God should be shot on sight. They have absolutely nothing in common. Period.

Possibly better than the first installment. I found myself wondering the entire time, how based in reality the film could possibly be. And I promised myself to learn a bit more about the police and favelas of Rio. A promise which I almost definitely won't keep.

Through Nascimento's perceived injustice, Padilha lends the film a sense of unwavering urgency as he dredges up the seamy underbelly of Rio's political playground. His fight against the drug underworld takes a backseat to the lies, deceit and unduly grabs for power that plague the scarred metropolis. With another great turn from the charismatic Moura and firm grip it keeps on its seemingly complex storyline, Elite Squad 2 has all the makings of a great film. At the end of the day, it really is.

I never saw the first one, but the title makes it sound like a cheesy action flick. Far from it, this movie deals with the problem of pervasive corruption. The story accurately depicts the law of unintended consequences -- a concept all too familiar to anybody who studies drug and/or corruption control policy

Even better than the first movie. Pretty amazing cinematography. Plot, acting, and action are impeccable, assembled to create a film which is far more interesting than the run-of-the-mill NYPD crooked cop stories churned out by the Hollywood studios each year.

Rarely do we see a sequel that is better than the first film. Elite Squad: The Enemy Within is that kind of sequel. I will not say it's a lot better, but it's slightly better mainly because of it's more interesting story that addresses certain social issues they face in Brazil. I was truly surprised by how good they made this. Definitely a duology I will come back to in the future.

An improvement over the original; this focuses more on Moura’s political wheeling and dealing, creating more dramatic sparks, while still delivering on some harsh action sequences. This still feels too derivative of other noughties era crime films (especially THE DEPARTED), but it fits the bill as passable entertainment, even mixing in some thoughtful (and quite incendiary) social commentary.

The story is a lot cleaner, and thus more compelling than the first film. The action picked up rather quickly, but they didn't rush the action at the expense of the plot as you commonly see. It's one of the better crime dramas in recent history, and the Rio background makes it feel genuine. My only significant problem with it is that they open with a significant scene in the ending, only to create a "twist" by altering this scene later. So many movies do this and I don't understand why.

Completely overdone, with constant monotonous narration detailing every little boring matter -- for a film dying for your attention, it sure didn't feature many thrills, action, or anything to care about, despite the subject matter being so important and topically relevant.

Like the first movie there's an undercurrent of fascist apologia, but there's a bit more nuance and positive character development than in the original. The "it's ok to murder bad people" vibe is still around, but at least it's countered by some from of consequence and an opposing character, even if his role is rather limited. Slick production values and good storytelling make it an interesting, if somewhat frustrating watch.

Reminded me a lot of The Wire. Great story, great action and great acting. A good insight in the cruel world of the favela's and the corrupt police agents. Perfect mix between action, story and character development so don't expect to watch a shooter movie. Captain Nascimento was great.

This movie is pretty entertaining but it was a little too complicated for an action film, especially a Brazilian action film. I really did like the main character Nascimento. Although, he looks like a Brazilian Mark Ruffalo. I liked the Politics involved in the plot and it's always good seeing dirty cops get what's coming to them. The parts involving his son seemed unnecessary to the plot and it was a bit weird trying to figure out who his wife was actually with, I'm still confused about that.

Sometimes a bit fast to follow with the subtitles, but it was a very suspenseful criminal action drama featuring a former BOPE leader who tries to uncover corruption as drug gangs are replaced by police gangs. If you still think your government is corruption-free after seeing this movie, think again.

Tropa 2 certainly doesn't have the raw energy, violence or element of surprise of its predecessor - but it's a different kind of film, a solid drama which rumbles authoritatively into the barrio, wielding the weight of a political drama with complex characters sexed up by a little action. While the storytelling and performances are good, the more nuanced exploration of good and evil detracts from the gun-toting, boot-stomping cartoonism that made the first film more fun. Different ain't better.

my grade reflects my ambivalence towards this movie: I consider it fairly well made, in a visceral-action-movie kind of way, and the actors are all decent etc. the narrative is very compelling, and that is the main problem: apart from the fact that it recalls elite squad 1, which I just rewatched yesterday and, once again, made me feel awful and sad (not in a good, "this movie is a good sad movie", way), the way the narrative is constructed is very questionable. worth a discussion, though.

Addresses some really large-scale problems, but still manages to demonstrate the issues on a personal level. It's rare to see an action movie like this, where you not only care about what happens during the action scenes, but they are (somewhat) unpredictable. And at some point, you might end up wishing there wasn't so much shooting, not because of how cliche and repetitive it is, but because something awful could happen.

A logical sequel and improvement over the first film, even though it loses some of the intense grittyness from the original in shifting the scope from street crime to corruption inside the (political) system. Luckily, I am a total sucker for this type of film and could not get enough of it. It's smart, exciting, infuriating and pretty badass. Would have liked a slower paced ending, but I'm hoping it's just meant as a bridge to a possible third movie.

A very tight thriller and an improvement over the first part with more complex characters and morals. It doesn't waste time with love side-stories and similar stuff, in fact, it want to tell so much, that a lot of it has to be explained with the use of narration.
