I've seen a tragically limited number of Bogart movies, but all of them were unquestionably HIS movies. He's second fiddle to none. So here comes his oft accomplice Lauren Bacall and I'll be damned if she isn't cool as beans. Let me look this up. This is their first film together, okay, so that's why she doesn't even look a little impressed. Wait. This is her first movie! First ever! How is she so effing cool? Wow. He better marry her.

It deserves attention for being an amazing duel between two Bogarts -- or two Bacalls --, in which Hawks shoots the main scenes -- the first one with Bacall asking for a match, their first kiss followed by Bogart's whistle -- with an amazing sense of time and space. Here, the hero is the same as in Casablanca -- the fisherman doesn't have political intention or dares to care; he does it for the money --, but in a superior film. Also, Brennan is the loveliest drunk guy of all time.

Betty Who? Lauren Bacall in her first movie role in what quite possibly could be the greatest filmic introduction to a female star. Reminiscent of Casablanca's structure, To Have and Have Not however had more than enough credibility for it to carve out it's own niche. And it did.

The seductively cool companion piece to Casablanca's dreamy warmth. Bacall is absolutely simmering in her screen debut and the chemistry between her and Bogart is phenomenal and completely believable. Features much better characters and romance than it's sibling film, but suffers from a weaker plot and less distinctive atmosphere.

Bogart and Bacall of course, but more. Walter Brennan gives one of his most eccentric performances, and the Furthman screenplay is tightly-plotted and full of wisecracks. I particularly love an early sequence where an incompetent fisherman (and weak man) charters Bogart's boat, and we are privileged to observe Bogart's subdued but growing contempt for his unprofessional and incompetent employer. A superb example of Howard Hawks' skill in showing men at work.

Listening to Walter Brennan unearthed a new understanding that I have seen a bunch of impressions of him without ever knowing who he was. This feels like Casablanca 2, which is not a criticism considering Casablanca 1 is one of my favourite films of all-time.

This movie is all right, nothing special, but it's easy enough to sit through. The story is a bit ludicrous and this isn't one of Hemingway's better books but there are still some classic Bacall/Bogie moments. But it is more or less a poor man's Casablanca.

The legend is that Hawks wagered William Faulkner that he could make a good film out of Hemingway's worst novel (or some such wager), and this was the chosen project. Hawks lets himself be guided in his task by the tested formula of _Casablanca_. There's Bogart; there's some dutiful wartime patriotism; and there's a boxed-in, stage-bound look to the re-creation of exotic Mozambique. However, there's also some fresh and spontaneous mischief, melodrama, and prurient interest.

Lauren Bacall enforce a mighty boner. The same does Hawks with his brilliant direction. There are certain scenes here filled with exeptional intensity; Bogart and Bacall in magical interaction bring forth an interesting nerve and creates a low-voiced erotic aura one should just inhale and enjoy. As always in a film by Hawks, the characters are filled with personal, complex antithesis not find in that many classics of the era; Hawks preserve the neverending dualism in man's heart on celluloid.

Filmed well but I can't get past the thought that this was a weaker Casablanca. The final resolution felt hollow since they went away from smuggling people to outright achieving their goals at gunpoint. Piano player kind of looks like Don Draper. Fav scene: "What did you do that for?" "I've been wondering if I'd like it." "What's the decision?" "I don't know yet."

However, dialogues are well-written, Lauren Bacall is introduced to the world with her charismatic appearance, attitude, and voice for the first time, Bogart is brilliant as usual, and of course, since it's the first movie of Bacall, naturally it is also the first collaboration of Bogart and Bacall, probably the greatest and definitely the most charismatic pairing in the Golden Age and beyond.

The comparisons to "Casablanca" are absolutely unavoidable. And, while it is by no means that film's equal, it is a solid "Casablanca-lite." The plot feels a bit contrived and the musical interludes are... not good. But the chemistry between Bogart and Bacall is absolutely undeniable right from the get-go. A nice little picture dwelling in a huge shadow.

It's at its best when Bogart and Bacall are playing off one another, which is mercifully pretty often. It's a fun, simple story with a bit of an abrupt shrug of an ending. The moments separate from the main plot like Johnson and the marlin fishing, life at the hotel/bar, and the musical numbers are more inviting and interesting. And at times it almost feels like that where the story wants to focus, but alas it's not to be. The main thread is a little rushed and unsatisfying as a result.

A movie that would more than likely be left in forgotten mediocrity today if the chemistry of the two main actors weren't some of the best of all time. The story itself is average at best. This felt kind of like a sequel to Casablanca. Humphrey Bogart is making a living in a war-torn exotic location, doesn't want to get caught up in any political disputes, but falls for a femme fatale and takes a risk to help a man and woman reach their comrades through some dangerous thoroughfare. And just to put a cherry on top, one of the side characters is a piano player in a hotel.

A pretty good, if slight, war drama. It feels like a "Casablanca" retread but it has a shambling charm of its own and it strays enough from the formula for it to work on its own terms. Bogart is good as ever and all the political intrigue and suspense works well enough. The real star here is Bacall, who burns a hole in the screen with one of the most magnetic and sexy performances I think I've ever seen. She and Bogart really have amazing chemistry.

This is the movie that taught me to despise Hoagy Carmichael, an unexpected result of watching this strangely uninvolving Hawks directed, Bogie-Bacall vehicle. Gimme "The Big Sleep" over this any day. Probably the most interesting thing about it is that this is Faulkner-does-Hemingway.

Humphrey Bogart is awesome. But who told Lauren Becall and Hoagy Carmichael they could sing? Becall was amazing at 20. Political intrigue in the Caribbean during WWII. Bogey is captain of a fishing boat and an able and capable man. His mate, the drunkard Walter Brennan was an unexpected surprise. They are caught between waring sides and try to stay out of it. Becall "I'm hard to get Steve, all you have to do is ask me". Parts of it is a romantic love story.

Published in 1937, To Have and Have Not is the closest Ernest Hemingway ever came to a political level. The film is a screwball classic posing as a war movie, with a little bit of musical. Effortless, serene, grown-up and childish at the same time. You kept the title? said Hemingway, perplexed. Sure, said Hawks - I had this girl and then I didn't have her. War is hell, Papa should murmur. But nothing's perfect. Is there a more "Hollywood" movie?

Then becomes two different movies: One about Bogart and Bacall having insane chemistry, Bacall absolutely eating the camera and even getting away with being a nightclub singer who obviously can't sing. ...And one anemic remake of Casablanca with a plot that goes nowhere and leaves us thinking "...Oh, B&B are leaving these people to the consequences of pissing off the local fascists for the next five years." But hey, just whistle.
